Generational research: between historical and sociological imaginations
This paper reflects on Julia Brannen’s contribution to the development of theory and methods for intergenerational research. The discussion is contextualised within a contemporary ‘turn to time’ within sociology, involving tensions and synergies between sociological and historical imagination. These questions are informed by a juxtaposition of Brannen’s four-generation study of family change and social historian Angela Davis’s exploration women and the family in England between 1945 and 2000. Obligation to Judge or Judging Obligations: The Integration of Philosophy and Science in Francophone Philosophy of Science
The aim of this chapter is to show how Francophone PS, or what is called French (historical) epistemology, embodies this interconnectedness. Moreover, a novel approach to what constitutes French epistemology will be developed here, going beyond a purely historical survey or a reevaluation of a range of concepts found in this tradition.7 The aim is instead to highlight two methodological principles at work in French epistemology that are often in tension with one another, but are not recognized as such in the literature

Thinking entails mental manipulation of images and concepts.
What you do not see mentally may not be understood, and what
you do not understand you might not be able to handle. To release or withhold implies manipulation. The techniques of handling thought by imagination are housed in the right hemisphere of the human brain. Understanding activates potentials. This underscores the vitality of wisdom and understanding; images enhance understanding making it tangible. Images are crucial to seeing as seeing is crucial to understanding. Whatever is actualized has been made visible (seen). Nothing can be purposively made visible without mental handling via thinking (manipulation). Potential must be seen, understood and worked out for it to be realized, actualized or released. Thinking skills
should be taught to scientists and future leaders. Human

Canonical Generations and the British Left: The Narrative Construction of the Miners’ Strike 1984–85
‘Generations’ have been invoked to describe a variety of social and cultural relationships, and to understand the development of self-conscious group identity. Equally, the term can be an applied label and politically useful construct; generations can be retrospectively produced. Drawing on the concept of ‘canonical generations’ – those whose experiences come to epitomise an event of historic and symbolic importance – this article examines the narrative creation and functions of ‘generations’ as collective memory shapes and re-shapes the desire for social change. Building a case study of the canonical role of the miners’ strike of 1984–85 in the narrative history of the British left, it examines the selective appropriation and transmission of the past in the development of political consciousness. It foregrounds the autobiographical narratives of activists who, in examining and legitimising their own actions and prospects, (re)produce a ‘generation’ in order to create a relatable and useful historical understanding
Formal Modelling, Testing and Verification of HSA Memory Models using Event-B
The HSA Foundation has produced the HSA Platform System Architecture
Specification that goes a long way towards addressing the need for a clear and
consistent method for specifying weakly consistent memory. HSA is specified in
a natural language which makes it open to multiple ambiguous interpretations
and could render bugs in implementations of it in hardware and software. In
this paper we present a formal model of HSA which can be used in the
development and verification of both concurrent software applications as well
as in the development and verification of the HSA-compliant platform itself. We
use the Event-B language to build a provably correct hierarchy of models from
the most abstract to a detailed refinement of HSA close to implementation
level. Our memory models are general in that they represent an arbitrary number
of masters, programs and instruction interleavings. We reason about such
general models using refinements. Using Rodin tool we are able to model and
verify an entire hierarchy of models using proofs to establish that each
refinement is correct. We define an automated validation method that allows us
to test baseline compliance of the model against a suite of published HSA
litmus tests. Once we complete model validation we develop a coverage driven
method to extract a richer set of tests from the Event-B model and a user
specified coverage model. These tests are used for extensive regression testing
of hardware and software systems. Our method of refinement based formal
modelling, baseline compliance testing of the model and coverage driven test
extraction using the single language of Event-B is a new way to address a key
challenge facing the design and verification of multi-core systems.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure
