Chaotic image encryption using hopfield and hindmarsh–rose neurons implemented on FPGA

    Get PDF
Chaotic systems implemented by artificial neural networks are good candidates for data encryption. In this manner, this paper introduces the cryptographic application of the Hopfield and the Hindmarsh–Rose neurons. The contribution is focused on finding suitable coefficient values of the neurons to generate robust random binary sequences that can be used in image encryption. This task is performed by evaluating the bifurcation diagrams from which one chooses appropriate coefficient values of the mathematical models that produce high positive Lyapunov exponent and Kaplan–Yorke dimension values, which are computed using TISEAN. The randomness of both the Hopfield and the Hindmarsh–Rose neurons is evaluated from chaotic time series data by performing National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) tests. The implementation of both neurons is done using field-programmable gate arrays whose architectures are used to develop an encryption system for RGB images. The success of the encryption system is confirmed by performing correlation, histogram, variance, entropy, and Number of Pixel Change Rate (NPCR) tests

At 8:15, before going to work, Rose puts on her pullover and attaches to it the small portable camera that looks like a hanger. The camera will take two images per minute throughout the day and will record almost everything Rose experiences: the people she meets, how long she sits in front of her computer, what she eats, where she goes, etc. These images show an objective description of Rose's experiences. This thesis addresses the development of automatic computer vision tools for the study of people's behaviours. To this end, we rely on the analysis of the visual data offered by these collected sequences of images by wearable cameras. Our developed models have demonstrated to be a powerful tool for the extraction of information about the behaviours of people in society. Examples of applications: 1) selected images as cues to trigger autobiographical memory about past events for prevention of cognitive and functional decline and memory enhancement in elderly people. 2) Self-monitoring devices as people want to increase their self-knowledge through quantitative analysis, expecting that it will lead to psychological well-being and the improvement of their lifestyle. 3) businesses are already making use of such data regarding information about their employees and clients, in order to improve productivity, well-being and customer satisfaction. The ultimate goal is to help people like Rose to improve the quality of our life by creating awareness about our habits and life balance

    Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion

An exploration of how the rose—the most ravishingly beautiful and symbolic of flowers—has inspired fashion over hundreds of years. The Rose in Fashion: Ravishing is a fascinating exploration of how the rose has inspired the way we look, dress, feel, and fantasize. It foregrounds innovative, refined, and challenging fashion design from elite 18th-century woven silks to the latest gender-neutral catwalk trends and Alexander McQueen rose dresses. Drawing upon fashion clothing, everyday dress, millinery, fine jewelry, perfume, and artificial and fresh roses, multiple expert contributors make reference to love, beauty, sex, sin, gendered identities, rites of passage, transgression, degradation, and death. This sumptuously illustrated book also includes a contribution and stunning images of roses by visionary photographer Nick Knight. Wild yet cultivated, savage yet delicate, this flower has remained an enduring symbol perhaps due to its versatility and the dichotomies it represents. The Ribbon and the Rose : Visual Rhetorics Against Violence to Women

    Get PDF
After the December 6, 1989 massacre of fourteen young women at MontrĂ©al’s École Polytechnique, Canadian women’s anti-violence groups and a now international men’s campaign against men’s violence to women adopted a variety of resonant visual images in commemoration and protest. The striking differences underlying women’s and men’s choices of images also reflect tensions at a rhetorical level about the appropriateness of men speaking out against violence to women. To explore these tensions, this article uses a method of rhetorical analysis that maps associations among “men’s” and “women’s” images, situates these associations within particular social contexts, and suggests some possible effects of these images and their messages on various audiences. While some activists feared that the men’s white ribbon — rather than the women’s rose or other symbols — might dominate the public imagination as a generalized protest against violence to women, a brief joint billboard campaign displaying the white ribbon and the rose side by side represents the possibility of women and men working with and through the power inequalities that exacerbate gender differences.
