An Impossible Utopia: People’s Art and the Cultural Revolution
The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution period of the People’s Republic of China (1966-1976) was crucial in the creation of modern-day China. The material culture of that period mirrors the turbulent political activity of students and the directives of the Communist Party’s central leadership during the height of the Mao Zedong personality cult. The commercial manufacture of posters, often the sole decoration available for the public and private spheres, offers strong examples of the design style of this time. The posters are not only indicative of the propagandistic fervor of production, but the aesthetic changes initiated in the visual and performing arts during the period as the state consciously manipulated style in an effort to create a “people’s” art and envision a Marxist utopia. This paper suggests that a comprehension of folk arts and popular culture is essential for understanding the visual language of this specific geographic and political space. A new perspective on the reconciliation of reality and ideology during the Cultural Revolution is gained through an analysis of popular form and content, and reveals not only the basis of a modern mass culture, but the unprecedented unification of high and low art forms

CCLAP: Controllable Chinese Landscape Painting Generation via Latent Diffusion Model
With the development of deep generative models, recent years have seen great
success of Chinese landscape painting generation. However, few works focus on
controllable Chinese landscape painting generation due to the lack of data and
limited modeling capabilities. In this work, we propose a controllable Chinese
landscape painting generation method named CCLAP, which can generate painting
with specific content and style based on Latent Diffusion Model. Specifically,
it consists of two cascaded modules, i.e., content generator and style
aggregator. The content generator module guarantees the content of generated
paintings specific to the input text. While the style aggregator module is to
generate paintings of a style corresponding to a reference image. Moreover, a
new dataset of Chinese landscape paintings named CLAP is collected for
comprehensive evaluation. Both the qualitative and quantitative results
demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance, especially
in artfully-composed and artistic conception. Codes are available at

On a landscape approach to design and eco-poetic approach to Landscape
For Landscape Architecture to become an academic discipline it must present its own coherent theory and methodology for the planning, designing and management of (built) landscapes. This also requires not only an articulated if difficult differentiation of planning, design and management and the interrelationship between them, but also clarification of the term landscape itself
The world of the landscape
In his article "The World of the Landscape" Bart Verschaffel analyzes the visual logic of the landscape genre in painting, as it was developed from the sixteenth century on. He argues that the structure of a minimal foreground, a middle ground cut off from the foreground, and a background that gives way to the distant, corresponds to a meditative attitude, proper to the nature of the image as such. The landscape is essentially a calm image. Second, Verschaffel puts forward that the middle ground in landscape images is not, as in history painting, a waiting room adjacent to the action in the foreground, but is rather oriented towards the horizon and beyond: a landscape always represents the world. In the romantic landscape tradition, moreover, the vagueness resting on the horizon comes to the fore and creates an "atmosphere" that touches a lonely soul and transforms an image of the world into an intimate encounter
