    Viewing the Future? Virtual Reality In Journalism

    Journalism underwent a flurry of virtual reality content creation, production and distribution starting in the final months of 2015. The New York Times distributed more than 1 million cardboard virtual reality viewers and released an app showing a spherical video short about displaced refugees. The Los Angeles Times landed people next to a crater on Mars. USA TODAY took visitors on a ride-along in the "Back to the Future" car on the Universal Studios lot and on a spin through Old Havana in a bright pink '57 Ford. ABC News went to North Korea for a spherical view of a military parade and to Syria to see artifacts threatened by war. The Emblematic Group, a company that creates virtual reality content, followed a woman navigating a gauntlet of anti- abortion demonstrators at a family planning clinic and allowed people to witness a murder-suicide stemming from domestic violence.In short, the period from October 2015 through February 2016 was one of significant experimentation with virtual reality (VR) storytelling. These efforts are part of an initial foray into determining whether VR is a feasible way to present news. The year 2016 is shaping up as a period of further testing and careful monitoring of potential growth in the use of virtual reality among consumers

    Point Cloud Framework for Rendering 3D Models Using Google Tango

    This project seeks to demonstrate the feasibility of point cloud meshing for capturing and modeling three dimensional objects on consumer smart phones and tablets. Traditional methods of capturing objects require hundreds of images, are very slow and consume a large amount of cellular data for the average consumer. Software developers need a starting point for capturing and meshing point clouds to create 3D models as hardware manufacturers provide the tools to capture point cloud data. The project uses Googles Tango computer vision library for Android to capture point clouds on devices with depth-sensing hardware. The point clouds are combined and meshed as models for use in 3D rendering projects. We expect our results to be embraced by the Android market because capturing point clouds is fast and does not carry a large data footprint

    Internal geometry of a textile reinforcement is an important factor of the reinforcement performance during the composite manufacturing and service life. In this article, generalized geometrical models of structural stitching loops are presented for the sewing, tufting, and dual-needle stitching methods. The term 'structural' presumes here that the stitching yarn does not only consolidate the plies (as the non-structural one does) but forms also a through-the-thickness (3D) reinforcement. The models account for the general features of the yarn loop geometry and are believed to allow for enough precise modelling on the meso-scale (textile unit cell) level. The modelling approach is validated with experimental data

    Free Viewpoint Video Based on Stitching Technique

    Image stitching is a technique used for creating one panoramic scene from multiple images. It is used in panoramic photography and video where the viewer can only scroll horizontally and vertically across the scene. However, stitching has not been used for creating free-viewpoint videos (FVV) where viewers can change their viewing points freely and smoothly while playing the video. current research, implemented FVV playing system using image stitching, this system allows users to enjoy the capability of moving their viewpoint freely and smoothly. To develop this system, user should capture MVV from different viewpoints and with appropriate region area for each pair of cameras then the system stitch the overlapped video to create stitched video/videos to display it in FVV playing system with applying freely and smoothly switching and interpolation of viewpoints over video playback. Current research evaluated the performance of video playing system based on system idea, system accuracy, smoothness, and user satisfaction. The results of evaluation have been very positive in most aspects

    AN INCREMENTAL BASED APPROACH FOR 3D MULTI-ANGLE POINT CLOUD STITCHING USING ICP AND KNN

    The basic principle of stitching is joining or merging any two materials or objects. 3D point cloud stitching is basically stitching two 3D point cloud together. 3D point cloud stitching is an emerging topic and there are multiple ways to achieve it. There are various methods for stitching which all have changes throughout the time. The existing methods do have shortcomings and have ignored the multiangle stitching of a same model or an object. This shortfall leads to many deficiencies in the ability of a stitching algorithm to maintain accuracy over the period. In this work I have introduced a new approach for an iterative based approach for 3d multi-angle point cloud stitching using ICP (Iterative closest point algorithm) and KNN (K-nearest neighbor). The design follows an incremental approach to achieve the results. This is a novel approach of stitching multiple 3D point clouds taken from multiple angles of a single bust. The framework is evaluated based on the stitching results provided by the algorithm capability of stitching multiple point cloud into a solid model

    Cameras generally have a field of view only large enough to capture a portion of their surroundings. The goal of immersion is to replace many of your senses with virtual ones, so that the virtual environment will feel as real as possible. Panoramic cameras are used to capture the entire 360°view, also known as panoramic images.Virtual reality makes use of these panoramic images to provide a more immersive experience compared to seeing images on a 2D screen. This thesis, which is in the field of Computer vision, focuses on establishing a multi-camera geometry to generate a cylindrical panorama image and successfully implementing it with the cheapest cameras possible. The specific goal of this project is to propose the cameras geometry which will decrease artifact problems related to parallax in the panorama image. We present a new approach of cylindrical panoramic images from multiple cameras which its setup has cameras placed evenly around a circle. Instead of looking outward, which is the traditional ”radial” configuration, we propose to make the optical axes tangent to the camera circle, a ”tangential” configuration. Beside an analysis and comparison of radial and tangential geometries, we provide an experimental setup with real panoramas obtained in realistic conditionsLes caméras ont généralement un champ de vision à peine assez grand pour capturer partie de leur environnement. L’objectif de l’immersion est de remplacer virtuellement un grand nombre de sens, de sorte que l’environnement virtuel soit perçu comme le plus réel possible. Une caméra panoramique est utilisée pour capturer l’ensemble d’une vue 360°, également connue sous le nom d’image panoramique. La réalité virtuelle fait usage de ces images panoramiques pour fournir une expérience plus immersive par rapport aux images sur un écran 2D. Cette thèse, qui est dans le domaine de la vision par ordinateur, s’intéresse à la création d’une géométrie multi-caméras pour générer une image cylindrique panoramique et vise une mise en œuvre avec les caméras moins chères possibles. L’objectif spécifique de ce projet est de proposer une géométrie de caméra qui va diminuer au maximum les problèmes d’artefacts liés au parallaxe présent dans l’image panoramique. Nous présentons une nouvelle approche de capture des images panoramiques cylindriques à partir de plusieurs caméras disposées uniformément autour d’un cercle. Au lieu de regarder vers l’extérieur, ce qui est la configuration traditionnelle ”radiale”, nous proposons de rendre les axes optiques tangents au cercle des caméras, une configuration ”tangentielle”. Outre une analyse et la comparaison des géométries radiales et tangentielles, nous fournissons un montage expérimental avec de vrais panoramas obtenus dans des conditions réaliste

    3D garment digitisation for virtual wardrobe using a commodity depth sensor

    5-Aminovaleric acid (5AVA) is an important five-carbon platform chemical that can be used for the synthesis of polymers and other chemicals of industrial interest. Enzymatic conversion of L-lysine to 5AVA has been achieved by employing lysine 2-monooxygenase encoded by the davB gene and 5-aminovaleramidase encoded by the davA gene. Additionally, a recombinant Escherichia coli strain expressing the davB and davA genes has been developed for bioconversion of L-lysine to 5AVA. To use glucose and xylose derived from lignocellulosic biomass as substrates, rather than L-lysine as a substrate, we previously examined direct fermentative production of 5AVA from glucose by metabolically engineered E. coli strains. However, the yield and productivity of 5AVA achieved by recombinant E. coli strains remain very low. Thus, Corynebacterium glutamicum, a highly efficient L-lysine producing microorganism, should be useful in the development of direct fermentative production of 5AVA using L-lysine as a precursor for 5AVA. Here, we report the development of metabolically engineered C. glutamicum strains for enhanced fermentative production of 5AVA from glucose.Various expression vectors containing different promoters and origins of replication were examined for optimal expression of Pseudomonas putida davB and davA genes encoding lysine 2-monooxygenase and delta-aminovaleramidase, respectively. Among them, expression of the C. glutamicum codon-optimized davA gene fused with His-Tag at its N-Terminal and the davB gene as an operon under a strong synthetic H promoter (plasmid p36davAB3) in C. glutamicum enabled the most efficient production of 5AVA. Flask culture and fed-batch culture of this strain produced 6.9 and 19.7\ua0g/L (together with 11.9\ua0g/L glutaric acid as major byproduct) of 5AVA, respectively. Homology modeling suggested that endogenous gamma-aminobutyrate aminotransferase encoded by the gabT gene might be responsible for the conversion of 5AVA to glutaric acid in recombinant C. glutamicum. Fed-batch culture of a C. glutamicum gabT mutant-harboring p36davAB3 produced 33.1\ua0g/L 5AVA with much reduced (2.0\ua0g/L) production of glutaric acid.Corynebacterium glutamicum was successfully engineered to produce 5AVA from glucose by optimizing the expression of two key enzymes, lysine 2-monooxygenase and delta-aminovaleramidase. In addition, production of glutaric acid, a major byproduct, was significantly reduced by employing C. glutamicum gabT mutant as a host strain. The metabolically engineered C. glutamicum strains developed in this study should be useful for enhanced fermentative production of the novel C5 platform chemical 5AVA from renewable resources
