Learning how to be robust: Deep polynomial regression
Polynomial regression is a recurrent problem with a large number of
applications. In computer vision it often appears in motion analysis. Whatever
the application, standard methods for regression of polynomial models tend to
deliver biased results when the input data is heavily contaminated by outliers.
Moreover, the problem is even harder when outliers have strong structure.
Departing from problem-tailored heuristics for robust estimation of parametric
models, we explore deep convolutional neural networks. Our work aims to find a
generic approach for training deep regression models without the explicit need
of supervised annotation. We bypass the need for a tailored loss function on
the regression parameters by attaching to our model a differentiable hard-wired
decoder corresponding to the polynomial operation at hand. We demonstrate the
value of our findings by comparing with standard robust regression methods.
Furthermore, we demonstrate how to use such models for a real computer vision
problem, i.e., video stabilization. The qualitative and quantitative
experiments show that neural networks are able to learn robustness for general
polynomial regression, with results that well overpass scores of traditional

Ensembles of wrappers for automated feature selection in fish age classification
In feature selection, the most important features must be chosen so as to decrease the number thereof while retaining their discriminatory information. Within this context, a novel feature selection method based on an ensemble of wrappers is proposed and applied for automatically select features in fish age classification. The effectiveness of this procedure using an Atlantic cod database has been tested for different powerful statistical learning classifiers. The subsets based on few features selected, e.g. otolith weight and fish weight, are particularly noticeable given current biological findings and practices in fishery research and the classification results obtained with them outperforms those of previous studies in which a manual feature selection was performed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Condition number analysis and preconditioning of the finite cell method
The (Isogeometric) Finite Cell Method - in which a domain is immersed in a
structured background mesh - suffers from conditioning problems when cells with
small volume fractions occur. In this contribution, we establish a rigorous
scaling relation between the condition number of (I)FCM system matrices and the
smallest cell volume fraction. Ill-conditioning stems either from basis
functions being small on cells with small volume fractions, or from basis
functions being nearly linearly dependent on such cells. Based on these two
sources of ill-conditioning, an algebraic preconditioning technique is
developed, which is referred to as Symmetric Incomplete Permuted Inverse
Cholesky (SIPIC). A detailed numerical investigation of the effectivity of the
SIPIC preconditioner in improving (I)FCM condition numbers and in improving the
convergence speed and accuracy of iterative solvers is presented for the
Poisson problem and for two- and three-dimensional problems in linear
elasticity, in which Nitche's method is applied in either the normal or
tangential direction. The accuracy of the preconditioned iterative solver
enables mesh convergence studies of the finite cell method
Characterization of vineyard's canopy through fuzzy clustering and svm over color images
In this work we propose an image acquisition and processing methodology (framework) developed for performance in-field grapes and leaves detection and quantification, based on
a six step methodology: 1) image segmentation through Fuzzy C-Means with Gustafson Kessel (FCM-GK) clustering; 2) obtaining of FCM-GK outputs (centroids) for acting as
seeding for K-Means clustering; 3) Identification of the clusters generated by K-Means using a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. 4) Performance of morphological operations over the grapes and leaves clusters in order to fill holes and to eliminate small pixels clusters; 5)Creation of a mosaic image by Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) in order to avoid overlapping between images; 6) Calculation of the areas of leaves and grapes and finding of the centroids in the grape bunches.
Image data are collected using a colour camera fixed to a mobile platform. This platform was developed to give a stabilized surface to guarantee that the images were acquired parallel to de vineyard rows. In this way, the platform avoids the distortion of the images that lead to poor estimation of the areas.
Our preliminary results are promissory, although they still have shown that it is necessary to implement a camera stabilization system to avoid undesired camera movements, and also a parallel processing procedure in order to speed up the mosaicking process
