Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar Based on Digital Beamforming and Waveform Diversity
This paper introduces innovative SAR system
concepts for the acquisition of high resolution radar images with
wide swath coverage from spaceborne platforms. The new concepts
rely on the combination of advanced multi-channel SAR front-end
architectures with novel operational modes. The architectures
differ regarding their implementation complexity and it is shown
that even a low number of channels is already well suited to
significantly improve the imaging performance and to overcome
fundamental limitations inherent to classical SAR systems. The
more advanced concepts employ a multidimensional encoding of
the transmitted waveforms to further improve the performance
and to enable a new class of hybrid SAR imaging modes that are
well suited to satisfy hitherto incompatible user requirements for
frequent monitoring and detailed mapping. Implementation
specific issues will be discussed and examples demonstrate the
potential of the new techniques for different remote sensing
applications
System Concepts for Bi- and Multi-Static SAR Missions
The performance and capabilities of bi- and multistatic spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) are analyzed. Such systems can be optimized for a broad range of applications like frequent monitoring, wide swath imaging, single-pass cross-track interferometry, along-track interferometry, resolution enhancement or radar tomography. Further potentials arises from digital beamforming on receive, which allows to gather additional information about the direction of the scattered radar echoes. This directional information can be used to suppress interferences, to improve geometric and radiometric resolution, or to increase the unambiguous swath width. Furthermore, a coherent combination of multiple receiver signals will allow for a suppression of azimuth ambiguities. For this, a reconstruction algorithm is derived, which enables a recovery of the unambiguous Doppler spectrum also in case of non-optimum receiver aperture displacements leading to a non-uniform sampling of the SAR signal. This algorithm has also a great potential for systems relying on the displaced phase center (DPC) technique, like the high resolution wide swath (HRWS) SAR or the split antenna approach in the TerraSAR-X and Radarsat II satellites

An introduction to the interim digital SAR processor and the characteristics of the associated Seasat SAR imagery
Basic engineering data regarding the Interim Digital SAR Processor (IDP) and the digitally correlated Seasat synthetic aperature radar (SAR) imagery are presented. The correlation function and IDP hardware/software configuration are described, and a preliminary performance assessment presented. The geometric and radiometric characteristics, with special emphasis on those peculiar to the IDP produced imagery, are described

Method for detecting surface motions and mapping small terrestrial or planetary surface deformations with synthetic aperture radar
A technique based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry is used to measure very small (1 cm or less) surface deformations with good resolution (10 m) over large areas (50 km). It can be used for accurate measurements of many geophysical phenomena, including swelling and buckling in fault zones, residual, vertical and lateral displacements from seismic events, and prevolcanic swelling. Two SAR images are made of a scene by two spaced antennas and a difference interferogram of the scene is made. After unwrapping phases of pixels of the difference interferogram, surface motion or deformation changes of the surface are observed. A second interferogram of the same scene is made from a different pair of images, at least one of which is made after some elapsed time. The second interferogram is then compared with the first interferogram to detect changes in line of sight position of pixels. By resolving line of sight observations into their vector components in other sets of interferograms along at least one other direction, lateral motions may be recovered in their entirety. Since in general, the SAR images are made from flight tracks that are separated, it is not possible to distinguish surface changes from the parallax caused by topography. However, a third image may be used to remove the topography and leave only the surface changes
Investigations on OFDM Signal for Range Ambiguity Suppression in SAR Configuration
International audienceThis paper presents an opportunity to cancel range ambiguities in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) configuration. One of the limitations of SAR systems is the range ambiguity phenomenon that appears with long delayed echoes. The reflected signal corresponding to one pulse is detected when the radar has already transmitted the next pulse. Thus, this signal is considered as an echo from the next pulse. This paper investigates the opportunity of coding the transmitted pulses using an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing pulse. The results show that coded-OFDM signals outperform conventional chirp signal and make it possible to relax constraints placed upon the pulse repetition frequency
Digital Beamforming and Traffic Monitoring Using the new FSAR System of DLR
In November 2006 the first X-band test flight of DLR’s new FSAR system has been performed successfully and in February 2007 the first flight campaign has been conducted for acquiring experimental multi-channel data of controlled ground moving targets. In the paper the performed experiments and the used setup of the FSAR X-band section are described and preliminary results in the field of ground moving target indication and digital beamforming are presented
Boundary Contour System and Feature Contour System
When humans gaze upon a scene, our brains rapidly combine several different types of locally ambiguous visual information to generate a globally consistent and unambiguous representation of Form-And-Color-And-DEpth, or FACADE. This state of affairs raises the question: What new computational principles and mechanisms are needed to understand how multiple sources of visual information cooperate automatically to generate a percept of 3-dimensional form?
This chapter reviews some modeling work aimed at developing such a general-purpose vision architecture. This architecture clarifies how scenic data about boundaries, textures, shading, depth, multiple spatial scales, and motion can be cooperatively synthesized in real-time into a coherent representation of 3-dimensional form. It embodies a new vision theory that attempts to clarify the functional organzation of the visual brain from the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) to the extrastriate cortical regions V4 and MT. Moreover, the same processes which are useful towards explaining how the visual cortex processes retinal signals are equally valuable for processing noisy multidimensional data from artificial sensors, such as synthetic aperture radar, laser radar, multispectral infrared, magnetic resonance, and high-altitude photographs. These processes generate 3-D boundary and surface representations of a scene.Office of Naval Research (N00011-95-I-0409, N00014-95-I-0657
