BLADE: Filter Learning for General Purpose Computational Photography
The Rapid and Accurate Image Super Resolution (RAISR) method of Romano,
Isidoro, and Milanfar is a computationally efficient image upscaling method
using a trained set of filters. We describe a generalization of RAISR, which we
name Best Linear Adaptive Enhancement (BLADE). This approach is a trainable
edge-adaptive filtering framework that is general, simple, computationally
efficient, and useful for a wide range of problems in computational
photography. We show applications to operations which may appear in a camera
pipeline including denoising, demosaicing, and stylization
Speckle Reduction and Contrast Enhancement of Echocardiograms via Multiscale Nonlinear Processing
This paper presents an algorithm for speckle reduction and contrast enhancement of echocardiographic images. Within a framework of multiscale wavelet analysis, the authors apply wavelet shrinkage techniques to eliminate noise while preserving the sharpness of salient features. In addition, nonlinear processing of feature energy is carried out to enhance contrast within local structures and along object boundaries. The authors show that the algorithm is capable of not only reducing speckle, but also enhancing features of diagnostic importance, such as myocardial walls in two-dimensional echocardiograms obtained from the parasternal short-axis view. Shrinkage of wavelet coefficients via soft thresholding within finer levels of scale is carried out on coefficients of logarithmically transformed echocardiograms. Enhancement of echocardiographic features is accomplished via nonlinear stretching followed by hard thresholding of wavelet coefficients within selected (midrange) spatial-frequency levels of analysis. The authors formulate the denoising and enhancement problem, introduce a class of dyadic wavelets, and describe their implementation of a dyadic wavelet transform. Their approach for speckle reduction and contrast enhancement was shown to be less affected by pseudo-Gibbs phenomena. The authors show experimentally that this technique produced superior results both qualitatively and quantitatively when compared to results obtained from existing denoising methods alone. A study using a database of clinical echocardiographic images suggests that such denoising and enhancement may improve the overall consistency of expert observers to manually defined borders
Wavelets and partial differential equations for image denoising
In this paper a wavelet based model for image de-noising is presented. Wavelet coefficients are modelled as waves that grow while dilating along scales. The model establishes a precise link between corresponding modulus maxima in the wavelet domain and then allows to predict wavelet coefficients at each scale from the first one. This property combined with the theoretical results about the characterization of singularities in the wavelet domain enables to discard noise. Significant structures of the image are well recovered while some annoying artifacts along image edges are reduced. Some experimental results show that the proposed approach outperforms the most recent and effective wavelet based denoising schemes
Convolutional Deblurring for Natural Imaging
In this paper, we propose a novel design of image deblurring in the form of
one-shot convolution filtering that can directly convolve with naturally
blurred images for restoration. The problem of optical blurring is a common
disadvantage to many imaging applications that suffer from optical
imperfections. Despite numerous deconvolution methods that blindly estimate
blurring in either inclusive or exclusive forms, they are practically
challenging due to high computational cost and low image reconstruction
quality. Both conditions of high accuracy and high speed are prerequisites for
high-throughput imaging platforms in digital archiving. In such platforms,
deblurring is required after image acquisition before being stored, previewed,
or processed for high-level interpretation. Therefore, on-the-fly correction of
such images is important to avoid possible time delays, mitigate computational
expenses, and increase image perception quality. We bridge this gap by
synthesizing a deconvolution kernel as a linear combination of Finite Impulse
Response (FIR) even-derivative filters that can be directly convolved with
blurry input images to boost the frequency fall-off of the Point Spread
Function (PSF) associated with the optical blur. We employ a Gaussian low-pass
filter to decouple the image denoising problem for image edge deblurring.
Furthermore, we propose a blind approach to estimate the PSF statistics for two
Gaussian and Laplacian models that are common in many imaging pipelines.
Thorough experiments are designed to test and validate the efficiency of the
proposed method using 2054 naturally blurred images across six imaging
applications and seven state-of-the-art deconvolution methods.Comment: 15 pages, for publication in IEEE Transaction Image Processin
A Survey on Image Noises and Denoise Techniques
Abstract-Digital images are noisy due to environmental disturbances. To ensure image quality, image processing of noise reduction is a very important step before analysis or using images. Data sets collected by image sensors are generally contaminated by noise. Imperfect instruments, problems with the data acquisition process, and interfering natural phenomena can all degrade the data of interest. The importance of the image denoising could be a serious task for medical imaging, satellite and areal image processing, robot vision, industrial vision systems, micro vision systems, space exploring etc. The noise is characterized by its pattern and by its probabilistic characteristics. There is a wide variety of noise types while we focus on the most important types of noises and de noise filters been developed to reduce noise from corrupted images to enhance image quality
An investigation on image denoising technique using pixel-component-analysis
This paper authenticates a proficient image denoising scheme with the analysis local pixel coherence. In the dominion of a study about noise and pixel elements in image processing, the influence of the Gaussian effect on image contrast plays a key role. It is found in particular that pixel variations may be vast in some cases which potentially tend to develop irregularities in the image
