    Optimized Matrix Feature Analysis – Convolutional Neural Network (OMFA-CNN) Model for Potato Leaf Diseases Detection System

    One of the most often grown crops is the potato. As a main food, potatoes are prioritised for cultivation worldwide. Because potatoes are such a rich source of vitamins and minerals, we can create a robust system for food security. However, a number of illnesses delay the growth of agriculture and harm potato output. Consequently, early disease identification can offer a better answer for effective crop production. In this research work aim is to classify and detect the potato leave (PL) diseases using OMFA-CNN deep learning model. An optimized matrix feature analysis-CNN deep learning model for PL disease detection is implemented. In the first phase, the PLs features are extracted from the potato leave images using K-means clustering image segmentation method. At the last phase, a new OMFA-CNN model are proposed using CNN to classify virus, and bacterial diseases of PLs, The PL disease dataset consists 2351 images gathered in real-time and from the Kaggle (PlantVillage) dataset. The implemented OMFA-CNN model attained 99.3 % precision and 99 % recall on potato disease detection. The implemented method is also compared with MASK RCNN,SVM and other models and attained significantly high precision and recall

Many methods have been proposed in the last few years for grayscale and color images. In this paper, we present a deep review of the state of the art on color image segmentation methods; through this paper, we explain the techniques based on edge detection, thresholding, histogram-thresholding, region, feature clustering and neural networks. Because color spaces play a key role in the methods reviewed, we also explain in detail the most commonly color spaces to represent and process colors. In addition, we present some important applications that use the methods of image segmentation reviewed. Finally, a set of metrics frequently used to evaluate quantitatively the segmented images is shown

    Computer vision based classification of fruits and vegetables for self-checkout at supermarkets

    The field of machine learning, and, in particular, methods to improve the capability of machines to perform a wider variety of generalised tasks are among the most rapidly growing research areas in today’s world. The current applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence can be divided into many significant fields namely computer vision, data sciences, real time analytics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). All these applications are being used to help computer based systems to operate more usefully in everyday contexts. Computer vision research is currently active in a wide range of areas such as the development of autonomous vehicles, object recognition, Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR), image segmentation and terrestrial analysis from space (i.e. crop estimation). Despite significant prior research, the area of object recognition still has many topics to be explored. This PhD thesis focuses on using advanced machine learning approaches to enable the automated recognition of fresh produce (i.e. fruits and vegetables) at supermarket self-checkouts. This type of complex classification task is one of the most recently emerging applications of advanced computer vision approaches and is a productive research topic in this field due to the limited means of representing the features and machine learning techniques for classification. Fruits and vegetables offer significant inter and intra class variance in weight, shape, size, colour and texture which makes the classification challenging. The applications of effective fruit and vegetable classification have significant importance in daily life e.g. crop estimation, fruit classification, robotic harvesting, fruit quality assessment, etc. One potential application for this fruit and vegetable classification capability is for supermarket self-checkouts. Increasingly, supermarkets are introducing self-checkouts in stores to make the checkout process easier and faster. However, there are a number of challenges with this as all goods cannot readily be sold with packaging and barcodes, for instance loose fresh items (e.g. fruits and vegetables). Adding barcodes to these types of items individually is impractical and pre-packaging limits the freedom of choice when selecting fruits and vegetables and creates additional waste, hence reducing customer satisfaction. The current situation, which relies on customers correctly identifying produce themselves leaves open the potential for incorrect billing either due to inadvertent error, or due to intentional fraudulent misclassification resulting in financial losses for the store. To address this identified problem, the main goals of this PhD work are: (a) exploring the types of visual and non-visual sensors that could be incorporated into a self-checkout system for classification of fruits and vegetables, (b) determining a suitable feature representation method for fresh produce items available at supermarkets, (c) identifying optimal machine learning techniques for classification within this context and (d) evaluating our work relative to the state-of-the-art object classification results presented in the literature. An in-depth analysis of related computer vision literature and techniques is performed to identify and implement the possible solutions. A progressive process distribution approach is used for this project where the task of computer vision based fruit and vegetables classification is divided into pre-processing and classification techniques. Different classification techniques have been implemented and evaluated as possible solution for this problem. Both visual and non-visual features of fruit and vegetables are exploited to perform the classification. Novel classification techniques have been carefully developed to deal with the complex and highly variant physical features of fruit and vegetables while taking advantages of both visual and non-visual features. The capability of classification techniques is tested in individual and ensemble manner to achieved the higher effectiveness. Significant results have been obtained where it can be concluded that the fruit and vegetables classification is complex task with many challenges involved. It is also observed that a larger dataset can better comprehend the complex variant features of fruit and vegetables. Complex multidimensional features can be extracted from the larger datasets to generalise on higher number of classes. However, development of a larger multiclass dataset is an expensive and time consuming process. The effectiveness of classification techniques can be significantly improved by subtracting the background occlusions and complexities. It is also worth mentioning that ensemble of simple and less complicated classification techniques can achieve effective results even if applied to less number of features for smaller number of classes. The combination of visual and nonvisual features can reduce the struggle of a classification technique to deal with higher number of classes with similar physical features. Classification of fruit and vegetables with similar physical features (i.e. colour and texture) needs careful estimation and hyper-dimensional embedding of visual features. Implementing rigorous classification penalties as loss function can achieve this goal at the cost of time and computational requirements. There is a significant need to develop larger datasets for different fruit and vegetables related computer vision applications. Considering more sophisticated loss function penalties and discriminative hyper-dimensional features embedding techniques can significantly improve the effectiveness of the classification techniques for the fruit and vegetables applications

    Applicability domains of neural networks for toxicity prediction

    In this paper, the term "applicability domain" refers to the range of chemical compounds for which the statistical quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model can accurately predict their toxicity. This is a crucial concept in the development and practical use of these models. First, a multidisciplinary review is provided regarding the theory and practice of applicability domains in the context of toxicity problems using the classical QSAR model. Then, the advantages and improved performance of neural networks (NNs), which are the most promising machine learning algorithms, are reviewed. Within the domain of medicinal chemistry, nine different methods using NNs for toxicity prediction were compared utilizing 29 alternative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Similarly, seven NN-based toxicity prediction methodologies were compared to six other AI techniques within the realm of food safety, 11 NN-based methodologies were compared to 16 different AI approaches in the environmental sciences category and four specific NN-based toxicity prediction methodologies were compared to nine alternative AI techniques in the field of industrial hygiene. Within the reviewed approaches, given known toxic compound descriptors and behaviors, we observed a difficulty in being able to extrapolate and predict the effects with untested chemical compounds. Different methods can be used for unsupervised clustering, such as distance-based approaches and consensus-based decision methods. Additionally, the importance of model validation has been highlighted within a regulatory context according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) principles, to predict the toxicity of potential new drugs in medicinal chemistry, to determine the limits of detection for harmful substances in food to predict the toxicity limits of chemicals in the environment, and to predict the exposure limits to harmful substances in the workplace. Despite its importance, a thorough application of toxicity models is still restricted in the field of medicinal chemistry and is virtually overlooked in other scientific domains. Consequently, only a small proportion of the toxicity studies conducted in medicinal chemistry consider the applicability domain in their mathematical models, thereby limiting their predictive power to untested drugs. Conversely, the applicability of these models is crucial; however, this has not been sufficiently assessed in toxicity prediction or in other related areas such as food science, environmental science, and industrial hygiene. Thus, this review sheds light on the prevalent use of Neural Networks in toxicity prediction, thereby serving as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners across these multifaceted domains that could be extended to other fields in future research

    Dendrobium candidum quality detection in both food and medicine agricultural product: Policy, status, and prospective

    Dendrobium candidum (DC) is an agricultural product for both food and medicine. It has a variety of beneficial effects on the human body with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, enhancing immune function, and other pharmacological activities. Due to less natural distribution, harsh growth conditions, slow growth, low reproduction rate, and excessive logging, wild DC has been seriously damaged and listed as an endangered herbal medicine variety in China. At present, the quality of DC was uneven in the market, so it is very necessary to detect its quality. This article summarized the methods of DC quality detection with traditional and rapid nondestructive, and it also expounded the correlation between DC quality factor and endophytes, which provides a theoretical basis for a variety of rapid detection methods in macromolecules. At last, this article put forward a variety of rapid nondestructive detection methods based on the emission spectrum. In view of the complexity of molecular structure, the quality correlation established by spectral analysis was greatly affected by varieties and environment. We discussed the possibility of DC quality detection based on the molecular dynamic calculation and simulation mechanism. Also, a multimodal fusion method was proposed to detect the quality. The literature review suggests that it is very necessary to understand the structure performance relationship, kinetic properties, and reaction characteristics of chemical substances at the molecular level by means of molecular chemical calculation and simulation, to detect a certain substance more accurately. At the same time, several modes are combined to form complementarity, eliminate ambiguity, and uncertainty and fuse the information of multiple modes to obtain more accurate judgment results
