    A Deep Learning Approach to Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs Classification

    Nowadays, advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially in machine and deep learning, present new opportunities to build tools that support the work of specialists in areas apparently far from the information technology field. One example of such areas is that of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. In this study, we explore the ability of different convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify pictures of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs coming from two different datasets of images. Three well-known CNN architectures (ResNet-50, Inception-v3 and Xception) were taken into consideration and trained on the available images. The paradigm of transfer learning was tested as well. In addition, modifying the architecture of one of the previous networks, we developed a specifically dedicated CNN, named Glyphnet, tailoring its complexity to our classification task. Performance comparison tests were carried out and Glyphnet showed the best performances with respect to the other CNNs. In conclusion, this work shows how the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs identification task can be supported by the deep learning paradigm, laying the foundation for information tools supporting automatic documents recognition, classification and, most importantly, the language translation task

    After the Hittites: The Kingdoms of Karkamish and Palistin in Northern Syria

    The disappearance and weakening of the Late Bronze Age territorial empires in the Eastern Mediterranean shortly after 1200 BC is traditionally held to be followed by a so-called Dark Age of around 300 years, characterized by a lack of written sources. However, new sources are appearing, mainly in the medium of Hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions, which help us to understand events and, more importantly, political and geographical power constellations during the period. The new sources are briefly situated within the framework of the current debates, with special regard given to the territories of Karkamish and Palistin. Emphasis is laid on the apparent continuation of local idioms for the articulation of power, largely persisting from the Hittite Empire, in spite of any changes in population, social structure, or political institutions that may have occurred

    The Design and Implementation of AIDA: Ancient Inscription Database and Analytics System

    AIDA, the Ancient Inscription Database and Analytic system can be used to translate and analyze ancient Minoan language. The AIDA system currently stores three types of ancient Minoan inscriptions: Linear A, Cretan Hieroglyph and Phaistos Disk inscriptions. In addition, AIDA provides candidate syllabic values and translations of Minoan words and inscriptions into English. The AIDA system allows the users to change these candidate phonetic assignments to the Linear A, Cretan Hieroglyph and Phaistos symbols. Hence the AIDA system provides for various scholars not only a convenient online resource to browse Minoan inscriptions but also provides an analysis tool to explore various options of phonetic assignments and their implications.     Analyzing Ancient Maya Glyph Collections with Contextual Shape Descriptors

    This paper presents an original approach for shape-based analysis of ancient Maya hieroglyphs based on an interdisciplinary collaboration between computer vision and archeology. Our work is guided by realistic needs of archaeologists and scholars who critically need support for search and retrieval tasks in large Maya imagery collections. Our paper has three main contributions. First, we introduce an overview of our interdisciplinary approach towards the improvement of the documentation, analysis, and preservation of Maya pictographic data. Second, we present an objective evaluation of the performance of two state-of-the-art shape-based contextual descriptors (Shape Context and Generalized Shape Context) in retrieval tasks, using two datasets of syllabic Maya glyphs. Based on the identification of their limitations, we propose a new shape descriptor named Histogram of Orientation Shape Context (HOOSC), which is more robust and suitable for description of Maya hieroglyphs. Third, we present what to our knowledge constitutes the first automatic analysis of visual variability of syllabic glyphs along historical periods and across geographic regions of the ancient Maya world via the HOOSCdescriptor. Overall, our approach is promising, as it improves performance on the retrieval task, has been successfully validated under an epigraphic viewpoint, and has the potential of offering both novel insights in archeology and practical solutions for real daily scholar need
