Transparent display with diffuser-backed microtextured illuminating device and method of manufacture therefor
A substantially planar illuminating device, a visual display and a method of manufacture therefor. The illuminating device includes: (1) a light source (210) and (2) a transparent substrate (220) having a pair of substantially parallel major surfaces (230,240) and an entry point (250) for accepting light from the light source, the substrate functioning as a guide for the light, one of the pair of surfaces textured with a plurality of microelements (260) for scattering the light from the substrate, the microelements having a side wall with a side wall area, the side wall area being a function of a distance of the microelements from the entry point to enhance a uniformity of the scattering of the light over an area of the pair of surfaces.Published versio

A holographic system for subsea recording and analysis of plankton and other marine particles
We report here details of the design, development, initial testing and field-deployment of the HOLOMAR system for in-situ subsea holography and analysis of marine plankton and nonliving particles. HOLOMAR comprises a submersible holographic camera ("HoloCam") able to record in-line and off-axis holograms at depths down to 100 m, together with specialised reconstruction hardware ("HoloScan") linked to custom image processing and classification software. The HoloCam consists of a laser and power supply, holographic recording optics and holographic plate holders, a water-tight housing and a support frame. It utilises two basic holographic geometries, in-line and off-axis such that a wide range of species, sizes and concentrations can be recorded. After holograms have been recorded and processed they are reconstructed in full three-dimensional detail in air in a dedicated replay facility. A computer-controlled microscope, using video cameras to record the image at a given depth, is used to digitise the scene. Specially written software extracts a binarised image of an object in its true focal plane and is classified using a neural network. The HoloCam was deployed on two separate cruises in a Scottish sea loch (Loch Etive) to a depth of 100 m and over 300 holograms were recorded
Praying the Advent season: Putting the coming of Christ into Christmas life
It is now nearly a decade since a revision of the Roman Missal was predicted and now five and a half years since the Missal appeared in Latin. The process of translating the 1377 pages is an immense project. After all the turmoil within ICEL\u27s structures, the work is going ahead. With Advent, the focus of new translations is in expressing fully the biblical references to the future Messiah in the orations. In the Roman Missal3, a new policy is set making the tri-fold form of Solemn Blessing a unique fixture of Advent. As Pope Benedict is asking, the sense of mission and not just dismissal is a challenge to live the spirit of the Advent season. This article challenges readers to enter into the spirit of the shortest liturgical season at the time of the greatest commercial distractions of Christmas sales and to ensure that the prayers are articulated with the confidence of the season.

Illuminating spindle convex bodies and minimizing the volume of spherical sets of constant width
A subset of the d-dimensional Euclidean space having nonempty interior is
called a spindle convex body if it is the intersection of (finitely or
infinitely many) congruent d-dimensional closed balls. The spindle convex body
is called a "fat" one, if it contains the centers of its generating balls. The
core part of this paper is an extension of Schramm's theorem and its proof on
illuminating convex bodies of constant width to the family of "fat" spindle
convex bodies.Comment: 17 page
c=5/2 Free Fermion Model of WB_{2} Algebra
We investigate the explicit construction of the algebra, which is
closed and associative for all values of the central charge , using the
Jacobi identity and show the agreement with the results studied previously.
Then we illustrate a realization of free fermion model, which
is limit of unitary minimal series, based on the cosets at level We confirm by explicit
computations that the bosonic currents in the algebra are indeed
given by the Casimir operators of .Comment: 16 page
