National Forest Programmes in Europe: Generating policy-relevant propositions for formulation and implementation
The COST Action E19 on National Forest Programmes in a European Context assembled more than 70 researchers and civil servants from 20 European countries and the USA. Some meetings were also attended by scholars from Canada, China and Japan. The participants aimed to provide policy makers in Europe with improved means for the formulation and implementation of National Forest Programmes (NFPs) for ensuring sustainable forest management. In order to accomplish this objective the work programme comprised the following tasks: to interpret the basic elements and institutional and procedural requirements of NFPs, to assess the effects of these elements and requirements on NFPs, to assess the supporting and impeding factors for the development of substantive NFPs, to evaluate the significance of NFPs in comparison to other policy means
Rural development in the area of Pollino: integrated design of an “atypical” chain
The introduction of the Integrated Projects of Food Chain requires the development of models capable of interpreting the dynamics of vertical and horizontal coordination between agents and the definition of the issues that most affect the ability of professionals to provide value added to goods and products to acquire in exchange a competitive advantage. With reference to setting up Local Production System of the Pollino - Lagonegrese, characterized by the development of an "atypical" food chain, for which the main factor of integration and competitive advantage lies in the strong link between companies and territory and in the social and economic value of the protected area agriculture, this research has developed a new model for food chain that combines theories of productivity with those of social welfare and environmental economics: multifunctionality and biodiversity related to the needs of income and efficiency of companies in various stages of the food chain classic.Food Chain, Protected areas, Rural Development, Integrated Project of Food Chain, Local Production System Pollino-Lagonegrese, Community/Rural/Urban Development,
MODELLING FARMS' PRODUCTION DECISIONS UNDER EXPENDITURE CONSTRAINTS
Limited budget for the purchase of variable inputs might adversely affect producer's input use decisions and might result in a non-optimal input usage. If expenditure constrains are present and binding, unconstrained profit-maximization is not valid for modelling producers' input use decisions. In this paper we apply the indirect production function approach which describes output maximization subject to a given technology, a set of quasi-fixed inputs and a given budget for the purchase of variable inputs. By employing the indirect production function in the stochastic frontier framework we can estimate producer's output loss due to both expenditure constraints and technical inefficiency. Our estimation results show that most of the study farms were expenditure constrained during the considered period. Expenditure constraints have caused on average a potential output loss of 11 percent. Output loss due to technical inefficiency is quite moderate and averages 18 percent.Indirect production function, SFA, expenditure constraints, technical efficiency, Russian agriculture, Farm Management, Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,
Organization and structure of the chain in the Integrated Projects of Food Chain in Basilicata region: the effects on the new rural dynamics
The introduction of the Integrated Projects of Food Chain requires the development of models capable of interpreting the dynamics of vertical and horizontal coordination between agents and the definition of the issues that most affect the ability of professionals to provide value added to goods and products to acquire in exchange a competitive advantage. With reference to the Basilicata region, the production structure of the region and the recent development of the Integrated Projects of Food Chain, this research has developed a new model of territorial organization of rural development. Now connect a new food chain model that combines theories of productivity, typical of contract economic, with those of social welfare and environmental economics: multifunctionality and biodiversity related to the needs of income and efficiency of companies in various stages of the food chain classic, in a context in which planning consultation is major determinant of local and regional development.Food Chain, Rural Development, Integrated Project of Food Chain., Agribusiness, Agricultural and Food Policy, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Labor and Human Capital,
The importance of detailed epigenomic profiling of different cell types within organs.
The human body consists of hundreds of kinds of cells specified from a single genome overlaid with cell type-specific epigenetic information. Comprehensively profiling the body's distinct epigenetic landscapes will allow researchers to verify cell types used in regenerative medicine and to determine the epigenetic effects of disease, environmental exposures and genetic variation. Key marks/factors that should be investigated include regions of nucleosome-free DNA accessible to regulatory factors, histone marks defining active enhancers and promoters, DNA methylation levels, regulatory RNAs, and factors controlling the three-dimensional conformation of the genome. Here we use the lung to illustrate the importance of investigating an organ's purified cell epigenomes, and outline the challenges and promise of realizing a comprehensive catalog of primary cell epigenomes
Intimate Partner Femicide: An Exploratory Study in the Rio Grande Valley
The purpose of this study is to explore the cases of Intimate Partner Femicide Victims from the Rio Grande Valley. By developing a cohesive understanding and assistance towards fostering knowledge and promoting social justice. Given the close proximity to the border, and hearing of femicide cases from both the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico marked my interest as Intimate Partner Violence is an ongoing Public Health Issue. Intimate Partner Violence is the leading cause of Intimate Partner Femicide. First specific project to contribute to limited research on intimate partner femicide in the Rio Grande Valley. A non-probability purposive sample of secondary data. Data consists of 26 IPF cases, which come from intimate partner femicide victim narratives released by the Texas Council on Family Violence, Local news reports (KRGV, local CBS 23 & 4, Telemundo McAllen, and Fox news South Texas), and local newspapers (The Brownsville Herald, The Monitor, and Valley Morning Star)
Employee forums in the UK: friend or foe of trade unions?
"With a tradition of informing and consulting employees resting on a single
union channel, the 2002 EU Information and Consultation (ICE) Directive
was bound to have a significant impact on employee relations in the UK
Undoubtedly, the works council as an institution, or employee forum as it
is often referred to in the UK, represents a totally new departure in UK
employment relations. The article specifically focuses on the repercussions
employee forums might have for trade unions. We focus on two
companies which have both recently founded employee forums to comply
with ICE regulation. We ask whether such forums should be considered as
posing a threat to British trade unions, or platform for revitalising their
position within the workplace." (author's abstract
Calculating SEC Whistleblower Awards: A Theoretical Approach
The Dodd-Frank Act provides that SEC whistleblower awards must equal not less than 10 and not more than 30 percent of the monetary penalties collected in the action to which they relate; SEC Rule 21F-6 provides criteria that the SEC may consider in determining the award percentage within the statutory bounds. When applying the Rule 21F-6 criteria, the SEC is required to think only in percentage terms, ignoring the dollar payout the award will actually yield. Last June the SEC proposed to change this, at least in cases where the existing methodology would yield an award less than 30 million. The proposed revisions to Rule 21F-6 have garnered controversy and have not yet been implemented. Do they make sense? To begin to answer that question requires an understanding of the purpose of whistleblower awards and an evaluation of how well the existing award calculation methodology advances that purpose. This Article provides both. The analysis suggests that the controversial proposed amendments to Rule 21F-6 are warranted, but incomplete
