Personal life event detection from social media

Creating video clips out of personal content from social media is on the rise. MuseumOfMe, Facebook Lookback, and Google Awesome are some popular examples. One core challenge to the creation of such life summaries is the identification of personal events, and their time frame. Such videos can greatly benefit from automatically distinguishing between social media content that is about someone's own wedding from that week, to an old wedding, or to that of a friend. In this paper, we describe our approach for identifying a number of common personal life events from social media content (in this paper we have used Twitter for our test), using multiple feature-based classifiers. Results show that combination of linguistic and social interaction features increases overall classification accuracy of most of the events while some events are relatively more difficult than others (e.g. new born with mean precision of .6 from all three models)

9 steps to scale climate-smart agriculture: Lessons and experiences from the climate-smart villages in My Loi, Vietnam and Guinayangan, Philippines

The Climate-Smart Village approach is a CCAFS agricultural research for development (AR4D) strategy for stimulating the scaling of climate-smart agriculture. CSVs are established in Southeast Asia through the CCAFS program to serve as sites for “testing, through participatory methods, technological and institutional options for generating evidence of CSA effectiveness as well as drawing out scaling lessons for policy makers from local to global levels (CCAFS, 2016). The CSVs in My Loi in Vietnam and Guinayangan in the Philippines were established following this strategy starting 2014 by the World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Vietnam and the International Institute for Rural Reconstruction, respectively. The potential for a negotiated stopping approach in London

Travelling is a significant part of Gypsies and Travellers’ culture and way of life and many families continue to travel in and around London following in the footsteps of past generations. Being able to stop in safe and secure conditions and having access to basic facilities such as sanitation and waste disposal are essential to travelling. Negotiated stopping is a balanced and humane approach to managing roadside camps, based on a mutual agreement between the local authority and Gypsy and Traveller families on matters such as correct waste disposal and basic temporary facilities, sometimes directing Gypsy and Traveller communities away from contentious public spaces to more appropriate council land. This approach is proven to achieve significant savings in public spending and decreased social costs for Gypsy and Traveller communities. However, across London the preferred approach for most local authorities is rapid eviction of roadside families which has significant negative impacts
