Designing a consulting services architecture model
textDuring my years of experience in the technology industry, it has become obvious that standard processes and methodologies within the engineering discipline are at a mature state. The realization though is that software engineering specifically lags behind. Most software engineering methodologies that I have studied focus on the mission of software development. It is this realization and the need for structure that led me to review existing methodologies used within my company's software services organization. The definition of what a successful software services methodology entails is rather limited. This report will provide a history of existing software engineering methodologies that I have studied, describe an initial services method that was being developed within my organization, develop a new model that addresses previous shortcomings and identify additional components required to further define a strong software services-oriented delivery methodology.Electrical and Computer Engineerin

Software systems engineering: a journey to contemporary agile and beyond, do people matter?
It is fascinating to view the evolution of software systems engineering over the decades. At the first glance, it could be perceived that the various approaches and processes are different. Are they indeed different? This paper will briefly discuss such a journey relating to findings from an empirical study in some organisations in the UK. Some of the issues described in the literature and by practitioners are common across different software system engineering approaches over the time. It can be argued that human-element of software development plays an integral part in the success of software systems development endeavour. After all, software engineering is a human-centric craft. In order to understand such issues, we crossed the discipline to other disciplines in order to adapt theories and principles that will help to better understand and tackle such matter. Other disciplines have well established human related theories and principles that can be useful. From Japanese management philosophies, we have adapted Lean and knowledge management theories. From psychology, we have adapted Emotional Intelligence (EI). With such an interdisciplinary view, some of the issues can be addressed adequately. Which bring the question: is it really the process or the people? The second author will reflect on his experience attending the first SQM conference 25 years ago. Feasibility in Applying Agile Project Management Methodologies To Building Design and Construction Industry
During the past few decades, fundamental changes have taken place in project development, planning, and execution. This has taken form with embracing new techniques such as various agile project management methodologies to develop products, instead of using the traditional waterfall project management methodology commonly used today. Using agile has been very successful as a large portion of the IT world has integrated it within their companies. Unfortunately, professional fields such as the building design and construction industry have remained mostly with the traditional methods impacting the projects in terms of cost, scheduling, and other project elements that can benefit from the advantages found in agile methodologies. This thesis paper will research and illustrate what is involved with the process of adopting and transforming companies from the traditional to the agile methodology, and will explain the benefits, the hardships, and other components relevant to illustrate what needs to take place in order to implement agile in the construction industry, as well as layout possible solutions that can ease the adoption process
INFORMATION SECURITY IN AGILE SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS: A CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTOR PERSPECTIVE
The importance of information security in software development projects is long recognised, with many comprehensive standards and procedures in use to provide assurance of information security. The agile development paradigm conflicts with traditional security assurance by emphasising the delivery of functional requirements and a reduction in structured and linear development styles. Through a series of thirteen qualitative interviews, this study identifies practices that address this problem which have been successfully adopted by agile practitioners. The findings present four categories of practices – organisational, team, project, and technical – and twelve critical success factors that should be explicitly considered by practitioners to assure agile security. The critical success factors provide a foundation for practitioners to strategically identify and develop best practices to embed information security in agile development projects. The identified categories also highlight the importance of agile security practices centring around individuals and culture and contributes to the literature by providing a representation of agile security practices that encompasses a broad range of focal areas
