We seek to know if a tradesman carries out a greater profitability because of his association membership. The assumption selected is that within the associations, the tradesmen put in common runs their social capital to reduce their transaction costs. Among 512 tradesmen form Benin, we estimate that those who are in association have on average 845 de profit supplémentaire.
The evolution of regional productivity disparities in the European Union, 1975-2000
The aim of this paper is to assess the evolution of regional productivity disparities in the European Union. Using a sample of 205 regions and 8 sectors on the 1975-2000 period, we use Esteban’s (2000) shift-share analysis to investigate the extent to which the existing interregional inequalities in productivity can be attributed to differences in sectoral composition between regions and/or to uniform productivity gaps across sectors. After a specification search on the bivariate functional forms that relate productivity differentials to their shift-share decomposition, the difference between regional and EU average productivity is regressed on the three shift-share components: industry-mix, differential and allocative (i.e. the covariance between the first two components). In that purpose, spatial seemingly unrelated (SUR) regressions are carried out to study the evolution of the impact of the components on the productivity gap over time, while allowing for intertemporal covariance. Moreover, spatial autocorrelation is also included in the SUR regressions, and its evolution over the period is analyzed. Results indicate that both spatio-temporal dependencies are essential in model specification.European regions, productivity disparities, spatial autocorrelation, SUR
LA QUALITE, LA QUALIFICATION ET L'ACTION COLLECTIVE DANS LES PROCESSUS D'INNOVATION ET D'ACTIVATION DES SYAL LE CAS DES FROMAGERIES RURALES EN AMERIQUE LATINE
N° ISBN - 978-2-7380-1284-5International audienceSince the late nineties in Latin America, a new way of Rural Agro-Industry (RAI) development has been opened with Localized Agri-food Systems (SYAL in French). It appeared from existing relationships between geographical concentrations of RAI and the territory and with the idea of coping with new challenges brought about by globalization. This perspective is particularly relevant in the dairy and cheese dairy sectors. The main objective of this paper is to present an analysis of cheese dairy Localized Agri-food Systems activation, based on various case studies in Latin America that were presented during a workshop held in Toluca, Mexico, in November 2009. We highlight the necessary conditions to land resources activation in the strategies of local development based on the relationship between the territory and food products. In particular, we try to show that the various forms of the articulation between territory and value chain on the one hand, and the constitution of external or internal social networks on the other hand, largely determine the modality of collective actions and their results. In the specific case of milk that we are dealing with, it appears that the basis of local development process rests on the co-construction of a territorialized resource connected with quality and know-haw, such as collective trademarks, registered designation of origin and geographical indication of origin
Geometric Mean Curvature Lines on Surfaces Immersed in R3
Here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined
on the Elliptic region (where the Gaussian curvature is positive)
of an oriented surface immersed in . The leaves of the foliations
are the lines of geometric mean curvature, along which the normal curvature is
given by , which is the geometric mean curvature of the
principal curvatures of the immersion. The singularities of the
foliations are the umbilic points and parabolic curves}, where and
, respectively. Here are determined the structurally stable
patterns of geometric mean curvature lines near the umbilic points, parabolic
curves and geometric mean curvature cycles, the periodic leaves of the
foliations. The genericity of these patterns is established. This provides the
three essential local ingredients to establish sufficient conditions, likely to
be also necessary, for Geometric Mean Curvature Structural Stability. This
study, outlined at the end of the paper, is a natural analog and complement for
the Arithmetic Mean Curvature and Asymptotic Structural Stability of immersed
surfaces studied previously by the authors.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Annales de la Faculte de Sciences
