    Network Interdependency Modeling for Risk Assessment on Built Infrastructure Systems

    As modern infrastructures become more interconnected, the decision-making process becomes more difficult because of the increased complexity resulting from infrastructure interdependencies. Simulation and network modeling provide a way to understand system behavior as a result of interdependencies. One area within the asset management literature that is not well covered is infrastructure system decay and risks associated with that decay. This research presents an enhanced version of Haimes\u27 input-output inoperability model (IIM) in the analysis of built infrastructure systems. Previous applications of the IIM characterized infrastructure at the national level utilizing large economic databases. This study develops a three-phased approach that takes component level data stored within geographic information systems (GIS) to provide a metric for network interdependency across a municipal level infrastructure. A multi-layered approach is proposed which leverages the layered data structure of GIS. Furthermore, Monte Carlo simulation using stochastic decay estimates shows how infrastructure risk as a result of interdependency effects changes over time. Such an analysis provides insight to infrastructure asset managers on the impact of policy and strategy decision-making regarding the maintenance and management of their infrastructure systems

    Vulnerability and Protection Analysis of Critical Infrastructure Systems

    abstract: The power and communication networks are highly interdependent and form a part of the critical infrastructure of a country. Similarly, dependencies exist within the networks itself. Owing to cascading failures, interdependent and intradependent networks are extremely susceptible to widespread vulnerabilities. In recent times the research community has shown significant interest in modeling to capture these dependencies. However, many of them are simplistic in nature which limits their applicability to real world systems. This dissertation presents a Boolean logic based model termed as Implicative Interdependency Model (IIM) to capture the complex dependencies and cascading failures resulting from an initial failure of one or more entities of either network. Utilizing the IIM, four pertinent problems encompassing vulnerability and protection of critical infrastructures are formulated and solved. For protection analysis, the Entity Hardening Problem, Targeted Entity Hardening Problem and Auxiliary Entity Allocation Problem are formulated. Qualitatively, under a resource budget, the problems maximize the number of entities protected from failure from an initial failure of a set of entities. Additionally, the model is also used to come up with a metric to analyze the Robustness of critical infrastructure systems. The computational complexity of all these problems is NP-complete. Accordingly, Integer Linear Program solutions (to obtain the optimal solution) and polynomial time sub-optimal Heuristic solutions are proposed for these problems.     Towards real-world complexity: an introduction to multiplex networks

    Many real-world complex systems are best modeled by multiplex networks of interacting network layers. The multiplex network study is one of the newest and hottest themes in the statistical physics of complex networks. Pioneering studies have proven that the multiplexity has broad impact on the system's structure and function. In this Colloquium paper, we present an organized review of the growing body of current literature on multiplex networks by categorizing existing studies broadly according to the type of layer coupling in the problem. Major recent advances in the field are surveyed and some outstanding open challenges and future perspectives will be proposed.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure

    Synthesis, Interdiction, and Protection of Layered Networks

    This research developed the foundation, theory, and framework for a set of analysis techniques to assist decision makers in analyzing questions regarding the synthesis, interdiction, and protection of infrastructure networks. This includes extension of traditional network interdiction to directly model nodal interdiction; new techniques to identify potential targets in social networks based on extensions of shortest path network interdiction; extension of traditional network interdiction to include layered network formulations; and develops models/techniques to design robust layered networks while considering trade-offs with cost. These approaches identify the maximum protection/disruption possible across layered networks with limited resources, find the most robust layered network design possible given the budget limitations while ensuring that the demands are met, include traditional social network analysis, and incorporate new techniques to model the interdiction of nodes and edges throughout the formulations. In addition, the importance and effects of multiple optimal solutions for these (and similar) models is investigated. All the models developed are demonstrated on notional examples and were tested on a range of sample problem sets

    Seismic Risk of Inter-urban Transportation Networks

    AbstractThe paper presents a holistic approach for assessing and managing the seismic risk and potential loss in inter-urban highway networks in earthquake-prone areas. The vulnerability of all elements of the intercity transportation system (i.e., roads, bridges, abutments, retaining walls, and tunnels) is assessed considering the interdependency among the structural, transportational and geotechnical components of the network under different seismic scenarios. Both the direct earthquake-induced damage, as well as the indirect socio-economic loss attributed to reduced network functionality are taken into account in an explicit and transparent formulation that is then displayed in space through an ad-hoc developed GIS-based software. The methodology and the decision-making tools developed are adequately modular, for them to be utilized after appropriate adaptation by local authorities in identifying, prior to a major earthquake event, those vulnerable components of their network whose failure may have a disproportional socio-economic impact. In this way, a rational and effective emergency plan can be deployed to minimize potential human, social and financial loss after a future earthquake. The outline of a foreseen application is also presented for the case of the road network of the Region of Western Macedonia in Greece. Through this pilot application, the methodology is to be optimized in real conditions before being cast in the form of a fully parameterised seismic risk tool, to be used in other earthquake prone areas as well
