PURPOSE: The development of the Internet as well as constantly changing fashion trends make consumers more willing to shop online. Entrepreneurs from the e-commerce industry must take care of the image of their brand in order to remain recognizable against the competition and attract as many recipients as possible. The main objective of the research was to try to determine the factors and motives influencing purchasing decisions among consumers of fashion products on the e-commerce market in Poland.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The study uses the method of analyzing the literature on the subject, as well as the analysis of source data, including e.g., data from mass statistics. Theoretical considerations were supported by the authors’ own research. The sample selection method used was a non-random method of purposeful character. The sample included people of different ages, with different income levels, who regularly shop in the clothing and footwear category via the Internet. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire. One of the tools of quantitative methods, i.e., a questionnaire, was used in the study. The study was conducted online using the Google Forms tool with 758 respondents in the period November and December 2022.FINDINGS: Contemporary buyers are seeing more and more benefits of e-commerce. First of all, they appreciate the 24/7 availability of clothing and footwear e-shops. The factor determining the attractiveness of e-commerce is also saving time for commuting to shops or shopping malls. Customers are also more and more convinced to e-shopping due to the wider and more interesting offer available in online stores. However, the study showed that young people with experience in navigating websites are still the most common online consumers. The Covid 19 pandemic was undoubtedly a turning point in the wider development and growth of this form of trade also among older groups of buyers who were not inclined to this form. Online shopping is becoming more and more popular in the following years and may become an effective alternative to the traditional form of satisfying shopping needs, not only among young people.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The article contains information on the current and future shape of the functioning of the e-commerce market in Poland against the background of the situation in this respect in the world. The e-commerce trend is becoming more and more visible in the vast majority of industries, but it is also gaining strength in the case of an ever-wider group of loyal customers.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The study contains important information on the factors and motives influencing purchasing decisions among buyers of fashion products in Poland via ecommerce.peer-reviewe

"I am a real cat": French-speaking cats on Twitter as an enregistered variety and community of practice

This paper is an exploration of the variety of French-speaking cats on Twitter. Among the many creative phenomena that the internet has produced, animal-related language varieties, the language used by pets, have been explored as early as the 2000s, yet with a strong and almost exclusive focus on English. I first describe the shared repertoire of lexical, semantic, phonographic, and syntactic features used by French-speaking cats, and show how the simultaneous use of a childlike code and a formal register constructs the sociolinguistic persona of cats as ambivalent animals. I argue that the French variety has become "enregistered" (Squires 2010) insofar as it is perceived and ideologically constructed as a variety of its own while promoting a welcoming culture towards new members. In doing so, cats show that the belonging to a community of practice, notably by drawing on a common repertoire of resources, does not need to be linked with processes of exclusion.Language Use in Past and Presen

Invasions: 'Othering' and the Social Control of Migrants, Cats, and Kudzu in Atlanta, GA

Invasion metaphors are today commonly used to describe immigrants, refugees, non-human animal and plant species, viruses, and even ideas. Despite the varied and widespread use of invasion narratives within and between species, mainstream research has underrepresented potential connections and relationships between such narratives. In order to better understand the role of invasion metaphors, this dissertation draws on fields such as critical animal studies (CAS), ecofeminism, and Chicana feminism while focusing on three case studies exploring the application of invasion metaphors to immigrants, feral cats, and kudzu in Atlanta, GA and surrounding communities. In the first case, I examine several competing narratives related to migration. In the second case, I explore the ambivalent ways deployed to manage and control feral cats. In the third case, I examine the history of the kudzu vine which covers millions of acres of land in the United States. I reveal the changing meanings U.S. scientific or “expert” claims makers have applied to this oft maligned vine. I conclude the dissertation by putting the cases into conversation with one another. The methods of analysis used in this dissertation are narrative and discourse analysis. The data analyzed included a wide range of representations collected from sources including interviews, corporate media, independent media, social media, academic literature, and websites. My analysis suggests invasion metaphors coarticulate to reproduce the inferiority and material exploitation of numerous “others” including migrants, nonhuman animals, plants, and all of “nature.” Further, the dissertation highlights the interconnected roles the state, market, science, and technology play in the social control of people, animals, and “nature” more generally. These findings not only shed additional light on such conditions, but perhaps more importantly point to Indigenous and feminist ways of thinking to help readers imagine other possibilities.Ph.D

Hoping for the Best, Preparing for the Worst: Prepping, sculptural practice and the everyday crisis of insecurity

This research project investigates highly individuated preparatory activity, or prepping, through a practice-led research methodology which is articulated through three frameworks identified from commonalities found in prepping’s often highly disparate activities. These frameworks, narrative, adaptable objects, and preservation, aid in sculpturally articulating an often-overlooked aspect of the prepping spectrum. Namely, those attempting to secure already precarious lives in a world of constantly unfolding and speculative crises

Indigenous knowledge, visualization and communication in African societies

    Get PDF
Africans have various ways of communicating thoughts, beliefs systems, cultural practices, traditional knowledge and so on, to individuals and groups in societies. These methods are mainly through verbal and non-verbal languages. The non-verbal forms could be categorized into demonstrative, visual and institutionalized ways of expression. These are vital aspects of African oral traditions that people inherit and use to transfer information to successive generations. In this research, attempt is made to examine some visual folkloric elements which serve as traditional techniques for communication. The study is both field and library-based research which enable the researchers generate more data and information. The relevant materials for this work, therefore, are carefully gathered from both primary and secondary sources to support the discourse. The photographs presented in this study are carefully selected because of their relevance to the subject under discourse and they are qualitatively analyzed using the analytical and descriptive approaches. The research affirms that nonverbal and visual methods are employed by Africans to communicate indigenous knowledge to individuals and society in general. These are evident in the visual texts inserted in the body of the work.

Simulating Digital Classics in Classical Teaching: A New Approach for New Demands in the Education of Classical Archaeology

    Get PDF
In the 21st century, Classical Archaeology is making more and more use of digital tools and methods. This tendency towards a future field of “Digital Classics” requires participation not only as users, but also as developers. For this reason, the required qualification profile for a student of Classical Archaeology is changing and academic teaching at universities is confronted with new challenges. Our presentation tackles this issue by suggesting a new teaching concept that focuses especially on the pivotal skills that are needed to use and develop digital methods within an interdisciplinary team. It is based on the didactic model of a simulation game. This simulation is attached to a (real) interdisciplinary research project. In this way it offers the possibility of a structured process model and challenges the participants’ skills of interaction and complex decision-making. The result is a realistic environment whose demands, means and conditions of action support the assessment and evaluation of academic expectations in multidisciplinary professional situation
