    Leveraging Open-standard Interorganizational Information Systems for Process Adaptability and Alignment: An Empirical Analysis

    PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the value creation mechanisms of open-standard inter-organizational information system (OSIOS), which is a key technology to achieve Industry 4.0. Specifically, this study investigates how the internal assimilation and external diffusion of OSIOS help manufactures facilitate process adaptability and alignment in supply chain network.Design/methodology/approachA survey instrument was designed and administrated to collect data for this research. Using three-stage least squares estimation, the authors empirically tested a number of hypothesized relationships based on a sample of 308 manufacturing firms in China.FindingsThe results of the study show that OSIOS can perform as value creation mechanisms to enable process adaptability and alignment. In addition, the impact of OSIOS internal assimilation is inversely U-shaped where the positive effect on process adaptability will become negative after an extremum point is reached.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature by providing insights on how OSIOS can improve supply chain integration and thus promote the achievement of industry 4.0. By revealing a U-shaped relationship between OSIOS assimilation and process adaptability, this study fills previous research gap by advancing the understanding on the value creation mechanisms of information systems deployment

    Collaborative driving mode of sustainable marketing and supply chain management supported by metaverse technology

    In this article, we aim to explore the relationship between sustainable marketing and supply chain management (SCM) under the background of metaverse technology to realize the sustainable development of enterprises. First, this study deeply studies the influence of metaverse technology on sustainable marketing strategy from the theoretical level. Second, it deeply discusses the integration of digital transformation and sustainable development in SCM. Finally, this study implements a collaborative driving model of sustainable marketing and SCM supported by metaverse. By designing and analyzing the questionnaire on the sustainable performance of enterprises, it is found that SCM, cooperation with customers, investment recovery, sustainable marketing, R&D and design, production, and manufacturing have a significant positive influence on the sustainable performance of enterprises (p<0.01). In addition, the distribution and retail in sustainable marketing negatively impact the sustainable performance of enterprises, and the standardization coefficient is −0.225 (p<0.05). These research results emphasize the importance of sustainable marketing and SCM, which jointly promote enterprises to achieve sustainable performance, and ultimately provide valuable practical guidance for building a sustainable digital economy and contribute to collaborative optimization in enterprise engineering

    The contribution of industry 4.0 technologies to increase internal and external operational flexibility of production systems

    Manufacturing flexibility is recognized as an essential competitive factor in the company's operational strategy as a response to market uncertainties and turbulence. Industry 4.0 emerges as a new industrial paradigm that allows meeting these types of needs of manufacturing companies, focusing on the creation of an intelligent system along the entire value chain that allows the achievement of flexible and adaptive processes. However, the academic literature has not yet presented empirical evidence on how each specific Industry 4.0 technology can contribute to operational flexibility requirements. Although Industry 4.0 is treated as a solution to this need, it is known that there are different types of implementations of Industry 4.0 depending on the operational objectives pursued and the characteristics of the companies. Therefore, the technological sets of Industry 4.0 can have different forms of contribution to achieve greater flexibility in production processes. The aim of this thesis is to create a framework to help companies implement flexible operations in the context of Industry 4.0. The study followed a mixed approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods. In quantitative terms, the thesis presents two survey research. The first was conducted with 94 companies in the machinery and equipment sector, through which the effect that different operational objectives – including flexibility – have on the definition of technological arrangements in Industry 4.0, is analyzed. The second was conducted with 379 companies, with the objective of analyzing how the smart supply chain concept contributes to the flexibility of the supply chain, especially in the context of uncertainties.. On the other hand, in qualitative terms, the thesis presents a multi-case study in 11 leading manufacturing companies in the implementation of 4.0 technologies, aiming to understand how these technologies are implemented to achieve different operational flexibility requirements. The present thesis demonstrates that, in fact, 4.0 technologies contribute to operational flexibility, but also explores the limitations and nuances of these contributions in different situations. The main contribution of this study is to provide empirical evidence of the effectiveness of different technologies used in a combined way to increase operational flexibility at its different levels.A flexibilidade da manufatura é reconhecida como um fator competitivo essencial na estratégia operacional das empresas, como resposta a necessidades do mercado, especialmente diante de incertezas e turbulências. A Industria 4.0 surge como um novo paradigma industrial que permite atender esse tipo de necessidades das empresas manufatureiras, sendo seu foco a criação de um sistema inteligente ao longo de toda a cadeia de valor que possibilita a obtenção de processos flexíveis e adaptativos. Contudo, a literatura acadêmica ainda não tem apresentado evidências empíricas sobre a forma como cada tecnologia específica da Indústria 4.0 pode contribuir para os requisitos de flexibilidade operacional. Embora Industria 4.0 seja apresentada como uma solução para essa necessidade, é sabido que existem diferentes tipos de implementação da Indústria 4.0 que dependem dos objetivos operacionais almejados e das características das empresas. Portanto, os conjuntos tecnológicos da Indústria 4.0 podem ter diferentes formas de contribuição para alcançar uma maior flexibilidade dos processos de produção. O objetivo desta tese é criar um framework para auxiliar as empresas na implementação de operações flexíveis no contexto da Indústria 4.0. O estudo seguiu uma abordagem mista, combinando métodos qualitativos e quantitativo. Em termos quantitativos, a tese apresenta duas pesquisas survey. A primeira foi conduzida com 94 empresas do setor de máquinas e equipamentos, através da qual se analisa o efeito que diferentes objetivos operacionais dentre eles a flexibilidade possuem sobre a definição de arranjos tecnológicos da Indústria 4.0. A segunda foi conduzida com 379 empresas, com objetivo de analisar como o conceito de smart supply chain contribui para a flexibilidade da cadeia de suprimento, principalmente no contexto de incertezas. Por outro lado, em termos qualitativos, a tese apresenta um estudo multicasos em 11 empresas de manufatura líderes na implantação de tecnologias 4.0, visando entender a forma como essas tecnologias são implementadas para alcançar diferentes requisitos de flexibilidade operacional. A presente tese demonstra que, de fato, as tecnologias 4.0 contribuem para a flexibilidade operacional, mas também explora as limitações e nuances dessas contribuições em diferentes situações.     UNDERSTANDING THE DETERMINANTS OF BLOCKCHAIN ADOPTION IN SUPPLY CHAINS: AN EMPIRICAL STUDY IN CHINA

    This study adopts affordance approach to understand how supply chain managers interpret the possible benefits that can be performed within blockchain-enabled supply chain applications. With a focus on governance efficiency improvement, the impacts of traceability and transparency affordance on uncertainty reduction were examined from the perspective of transaction cost theory in supply chain industry. Partial least squares – structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the data collected from 364 experienced supply chain managers in China. The results revealed that traceability affordance exerted significant impacts on environmental and trading partner uncertainty rather than transparency affordance, which in turn affected the adoption intention. This study contributes to the extant literature by embedding transaction cost in blockchain affordances. The findings are useful in guiding practitioners to improve blockchain system design for reducing uncertainties in supply chain environment, leading to a higher adoption rate of blockchain technology

    The Role of Knowledge Management in the Relationship between IT Capability and Interorganizational Performance: An Empirical Investigation

    Knowledge management capability (KMC) represents an important link between IT and individual firm performance. We investigate this link in an interorganizational (IO) context—an increasingly important and yet substantially underresearched area. Based on reviewing and integrating the literature, we develop and test a comprehensive empirical conceptualization of KMC that includes knowledge creation, transfer, retention, and application. We collected survey data from supply management professionals at one partner firm (either customer or supplier) in an IO relationship. We tested our research hypotheses using structural equation modeling. We found that partner firms’ KMC was positively associated with IO performance. We also found that IO information technology (IOIT) infrastructure capabilities facilitated KMC through the strength of IO relational capability. Partner interdependence was positively associated with IO relational capability and with KMC. Taking a knowledge management (KM) perspective, our research shows that IT requires relational capability and KMC to bring performance gains to IO partnerships. These insights have theoretical importance for understanding IT-enabled knowledge management in IO settings and practical significance for firms to effectively use their IOIT infrastructure

    AI-enabled Integration in the Supply Chain - A Solution in the Digitalization Era

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is getting increased attention from various manufacturing industries, including fashion and textiles, due to its ability to work effectively, similar to human intelligence. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) paper proposes potential future research directions that emphasize the impacts of AI on supply chain integration (SCI) efforts through information sharing (IS). A structured literature review of articles in the 2010-2021 period, addressing geographic location, journals, publishers, authors, research designs, and applied theories, has been used to prepare this paper. The additional discussion of AI incorporates information from the structured review to conclude the findings and suggest future research directions. The authors have used the Scopus database and prestigious peer-reviewed journals to search for relevant papers using suitable keywords. This paper concluded that the Asian region has the highest concentration of publications and that AI adoption positively affects the IS-SCI relationship. Empirical quantitative research design and resource-based view theory are prominent among the reviewed publications. This SLR paper is limited by not having the impacts of AI discussed at the subset level

    Information Processing view of Electricity Demand Response Systems: A Comparative Study Between India and Australia

    Background: In recent years, demand response (DR) has gained increased attention from utilities, regulators, and market aggregators to meet the growing demands of electricity. The key aspect of a successful DR program is the effective processing of data and information to gain critical insights. This study aims to identify information processing needs and capacity that interact to improve energy DR effectiveness. To this end, organizational information processing theory (OIPT) is employed to understand the role of Information Systems (IS) resources in achieving desired DR program performance. This study also investigates how information processing for DR systems differ between developing (India) and developed (Australia) countries. Method: This work adopts a case study methodology to propose a theoretical framework using OIPT for information processing in DR systems. The study further employs a comparative case data analyses between Australian and Indian DR initiatives. Results: Our cross case analysis identifies variables of value creation in designing DR programs - pricing structure for demand side participation, renewable integration at supply side, reforms in the regulatory instruments, and emergent technology. This research posits that the degree of information processing capacity mediates the influence of information processing needs on energy DR effectiveness. Further, we develop five propositions on the interaction between task based information processing needs and capacity, and their influence on DR effectiveness. Conclusions: The study generates insights on the role of IS resources that can help stakeholders in the electricity value chain to take informed and intelligent decisions for improved performance of DR programs
