Many approaches to ontology alignment use multiple similarity measures to map entities between ontologies. However, it remains a key challenge in dealing with uncertain entities for which the employed ontology alignment measures produce conflicting results on similarity of the mapped entities. This paper presents OARS, a rough-set based approach to ontology alignment which achieves a high degree of accuracy in situations where uncertainty arises because of the conflicting results generated by different similarity measures. OARS employs a combinational approach and considers both lexical and structural similarity measures. OARS is extensively evaluated with the benchmark ontologies of the ontology alignment evaluation initiative (OAEI) 2010, and performs best in the aspect of recall in comparison with a number of alignment systems while generating a comparable performance in precision
Uncertainty in Ontologies: Dempster-Shafer Theory for Data Fusion Applications
Nowadays ontologies present a growing interest in Data Fusion applications.
As a matter of fact, the ontologies are seen as a semantic tool for describing
and reasoning about sensor data, objects, relations and general domain
theories. In addition, uncertainty is perhaps one of the most important
characteristics of the data and information handled by Data Fusion. However,
the fundamental nature of ontologies implies that ontologies describe only
asserted and veracious facts of the world. Different probabilistic, fuzzy and
evidential approaches already exist to fill this gap; this paper recaps the
most popular tools. However none of the tools meets exactly our purposes.
Therefore, we constructed a Dempster-Shafer ontology that can be imported into
any specific domain ontology and that enables us to instantiate it in an
uncertain manner. We also developed a Java application that enables reasoning
about these uncertain ontological instances.Comment: Workshop on Theory of Belief Functions, Brest: France (2010
A lightweight web video model with content and context descriptions for integration with linked data
The rapid increase of video data on the Web has warranted an urgent need for effective representation, management and retrieval of web videos. Recently, many studies have been carried out for ontological representation of videos, either using domain dependent or generic schemas such as MPEG-7, MPEG-4, and COMM. In spite of their extensive coverage and sound theoretical grounding, they are yet to be widely used by users. Two main possible reasons are the complexities involved and a lack of tool support. We propose a lightweight video content model for content-context description and integration. The uniqueness of the model is that it tries to model the emerging social context to describe and interpret the video. Our approach is grounded on exploiting easily extractable evolving contextual metadata and on the availability of existing data on the Web. This enables representational homogeneity and a firm basis for information integration among semantically-enabled data sources. The model uses many existing schemas to describe various ontology classes and shows the scope of interlinking with the Linked Data cloud
Applying semantic web technologies to knowledge sharing in aerospace engineering
This paper details an integrated methodology to optimise Knowledge reuse and sharing, illustrated with a use case in the aeronautics domain. It uses Ontologies as a central modelling strategy for the Capture of Knowledge from legacy docu-ments via automated means, or directly in systems interfacing with Knowledge workers, via user-defined, web-based forms. The domain ontologies used for Knowledge Capture also guide the retrieval of the Knowledge extracted from the data using a Semantic Search System that provides support for multiple modalities during search. This approach has been applied and evaluated successfully within the aerospace domain, and is currently being extended for use in other domains on an increasingly large scale
Streaming the Web: Reasoning over dynamic data.
In the last few years a new research area, called stream reasoning, emerged to bridge the gap between reasoning and stream processing. While current reasoning approaches are designed to work on mainly static data, the Web is, on the other hand, extremely dynamic: information is frequently changed and updated, and new data is continuously generated from a huge number of sources, often at high rate. In other words, fresh information is constantly made available in the form of streams of new data and updates. Despite some promising investigations in the area, stream reasoning is still in its infancy, both from the perspective of models and theories development, and from the perspective of systems and tools design and implementation. The aim of this paper is threefold: (i) we identify the requirements coming from different application scenarios, and we isolate the problems they pose; (ii) we survey existing approaches and proposals in the area of stream reasoning, highlighting their strengths and limitations; (iii) we draw a research agenda to guide the future research and development of stream reasoning. In doing so, we also analyze related research fields to extract algorithms, models, techniques, and solutions that could be useful in the area of stream reasoning. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. A General Framework for Representing, Reasoning and Querying with Annotated Semantic Web Data
We describe a generic framework for representing and reasoning with annotated
Semantic Web data, a task becoming more important with the recent increased
amount of inconsistent and non-reliable meta-data on the web. We formalise the
annotated language, the corresponding deductive system and address the query
answering problem. Previous contributions on specific RDF annotation domains
are encompassed by our unified reasoning formalism as we show by instantiating
it on (i) temporal, (ii) fuzzy, and (iii) provenance annotations. Moreover, we
provide a generic method for combining multiple annotation domains allowing to
represent, e.g. temporally-annotated fuzzy RDF. Furthermore, we address the
development of a query language -- AnQL -- that is inspired by SPARQL,
including several features of SPARQL 1.1 (subqueries, aggregates, assignment,
solution modifiers) along with the formal definitions of their semantics
When Things Matter: A Data-Centric View of the Internet of Things
With the recent advances in radio-frequency identification (RFID), low-cost
wireless sensor devices, and Web technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT)
approach has gained momentum in connecting everyday objects to the Internet and
facilitating machine-to-human and machine-to-machine communication with the
physical world. While IoT offers the capability to connect and integrate both
digital and physical entities, enabling a whole new class of applications and
services, several significant challenges need to be addressed before these
applications and services can be fully realized. A fundamental challenge
centers around managing IoT data, typically produced in dynamic and volatile
environments, which is not only extremely large in scale and volume, but also
noisy, and continuous. This article surveys the main techniques and
state-of-the-art research efforts in IoT from data-centric perspectives,
including data stream processing, data storage models, complex event
processing, and searching in IoT. Open research issues for IoT data management
are also discussed
