    Automatic speech recognition with deep neural networks for impaired speech

However, recognition of impaired speech is a difficult task for two main reasons: data is (i) scarce and (ii) heterogeneous. In this work we train different architectures on a database of dysarthric speech. A comparison between architectures shows that, even with a small database, hybrid DNN-HMM models outperform classical GMM-HMM according to word error rate measures. A DNN is able to improve the recognition word error rate a 13% for subjects with dysarthria with respect to the best classical architecture. This improvement is higher than the one given by other deep neural networks such as CNNs, TDNNs and LSTMs. All the experiments have been done with the Kaldi toolkit for speech recognition for which we have adapted several recipes to deal with dysarthric speech and work on the TORGO database.     The ICL-TUM-PASSAU approach for the MediaEval 2015 "affective impact of movies" task

    In this paper we describe the Imperial College London, Technische Universitat MĂĽnchen and University of Passau (ICL+TUM+PASSAU) team approach to the MediaEval's "Affective Impact of Movies" challenge, which consists in the automatic detection of affective (arousal and valence) and violent content in movie excerpts. In addition to the baseline features, we computed spectral and energy related acoustic features, and the probability of various objects being present in the video. Random Forests, AdaBoost and Support Vector Machines were used as classification methods. Best results show that the dataset is highly challenging for both affect and violence detection tasks, mainly because of issues in inter-rater agreement and data scarcity

    A study on the relationship between the intelligibility and quality of algorithmically-modified speech for normal hearing listeners

    This study investigates the relationship between the intelligibility and quality of modified speech in noise and in quiet. Speech signals were processed by seven algorithms designed to increase speech intelligibility in noise without altering speech intensity. In three noise maskers, including both stationary and fluctuating noise at two signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), listeners identified keywords from unmodified or modified sentences. The intelligibility performance of each type of speech was measured as the listeners’ word recognition rate in each condition, while the quality was rated as a mean opinion score. In quiet, only the perceptual quality of each type of speech was assessed. The results suggest that when listening in noise, modification performance on improving intelligibility is more important than its potential negative impact on speech quality. However, when listening in quiet or at SNRs in which intelligibility is no longer an issue to listeners, the impact to speech quality due to modification becomes a concern

    Automatic intelligibility measures applied to speech signals simulating age-related hearing loss

    International audienceThis research work forms the first part of a long-term project designed to provide a framework for facilitating hearing aids tuning. The present study focuses on the setting up of automatic measures of speech intelligibility for the recognition of isolated words and sentences. Both materials were degraded in order to simulate presbycusis effects on speech perception. Automatic measures based on an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system were applied to an audio corpus simulating the effects of presbycusis at nine severity stages. The results are compared to reference intelligibility scores collected from 60 French listeners. The aim of this system being to produce measures as close as possible to human behaviour, good performances were achieved since strong correlations between subjective and objective scores are observed
