    Designing a Planetary-Scale IMAP Service with Conflict-free Replicated Data Types

    Modern geo-replicated software serving millions of users across the globe faces the consequences of the CAP dilemma, i.e., the inevitable conflicts that arise when multiple nodes accept writes on shared state. The underlying problem is commonly known as fault-tolerant multi-leader replica- tion; actively researched in the distributed systems and database communities. As a more recent theoretical framework, Conflict-free Replicated Data Types (CRDTs) propose a solution to this problem by offering a set of always converging primitives. However, modeling non-trivial system state with CRDT primitives is a challenging and error-prone task. In this work, we propose a solution for a geo-replicated online service with fault-tolerant multi-leader replication based on CRDTs. We chose IMAP as use case due to its prevalence and simplicity. Therefore, we modeled an IMAP-CRDT and verified its correctness with the interactive theorem prover Isabelle/HOL. In order to bridge the gap between theory and practice, we implemented an open-source proto- type pluto and an IMAP benchmark for write-intensive workloads. We evaluated our prototype against the standard IMAP server Dovecot on a multi-continent public cloud. The results ex- pose the limitations of Dovecot with respect to response time performance and replication lag. Our prototype was able to leverage its conceptual advantages and outperformed Dovecot. We find that our approach is promising when facing the multitude of potential concurrency bugs in development of systems at planetary scale

    Meeting of the Ecosystem Approach Correspondence Group on on Pollution Monitoring (CorMon Pollution)

    In accordance with the UNEP/MAP Programme of Work adopted by COP 21 for the biennium 2020-2021, the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan-Barcelona Convention Secretariat (UNEP/MAP) and its Programme for the Assessment and Control of Marine Pollution in the Mediterranean (MED POL) organized the Meeting of the Ecosystem Approach Correspondence Group on Pollution Monitoring (CorMon on Pollution Monitoring). The Meeting was held via videoconference on 26-27 April 2021. 2. The main objectives of the Meeting were to: a) Review the Monitoring Guidelines/Protocols for IMAP Common Indicator 18, as well as the Monitoring Guidelines/Protocols for Analytical Quality Assurance and Reporting of Monitoring Data for IMAP Common Indicators 13, 14, 17, 18 and 20; b) Take stock of the state of play of inter-laboratory testing and good laboratory practice related to IMAP Ecological Objectives 5 and 9; c) Analyze the proposal for the integration and aggregation rules for IMAP Ecological Objectives 5, 9 and 10 and assessment criteria for contaminants and nutrients; d) Recommend the ways and means to strengthen implementation of IMAP Pollution Cluster towards preparation of the 2023 MED Quality Status Report

    Unified Internet Messaging

    As telephony services, mobile services and internet services continue to converge, the prospect of providing Unified Messaging and even Unified Communications becomes increasingly achievable. This paper discusses the growing importance of IP-based networks to Unified Messaging developments and examines some of the key services and protocols that are likely to make Unified Messaging more widely available. In this initial paper, we limit ourselves initially to the unification of text-based messaging using SMS and Email. The approach we make is based on the existing Internet Email framework but will take cognisance of the need to add voice and other non-text based messaging and communications at a later stage. Ultimately, the research project aims to build a working prototype of a generic messaging model that works for both non realtime and real-time communications. This model will provide a framework into which existing and future messaging protocols can be plugged.     A security analysis of email communications

    The objective of this report is to analyse the security and privacy risks of email communications and identify technical countermeasures capable of mitigating them effectively. In order to do so, the report analyses from a technical point of view the core set of communication protocols and standards that support email communications in order to identify and understand the existing security and privacy vulnerabilities. On the basis of this analysis, the report identifies and analyses technical countermeasures, in the form of newer standards, protocols and tools, aimed at ensuring a better protection of the security and privacy of email communications. The practical implementation of each countermeasure is evaluated in order to understand its limitations and identify potential technical and organisational constrains that could limit its effectiveness in practice. The outcome of the above mentioned analysis is a set of recommendations regarding technical and organisational measures that when combined properly have the potential of more effectively mitigating the privacy and security risks of today's email communications.JRC.G.6-Digital Citizen Securit

    Towards the definition of a quality model for mail servers

    The paper presents an approach for building a Mail Server Quality Model, based on the ISO/IEC software quality standard. We start by defining the mail system domain to be used as general framework and the relevant technologies involved. Then a general overview of the ISO/IEC standard is given. The basic steps, the relevant considerations and criteria used to select the appropriated subcharacteristics and quality attributes are also presented. The selected attributes are categorized under the six ISO/IEC quality characteristics conforming the model. Finally some case studies requirements and two commercial mail server tools are used to evaluate the model.Postprint (published version

    Músculo adutor do polegar: um novo parâmetro antropométrico

    PURPOSE: To measure the thickness of adductor pollicis muscle in healthy adults. This measurement will be used as a nutritional anthropometric parameter in further studies. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: Four hundred and twenty-one healthy adults were studied, 209 men and 212 women, with ages ranging from 18 to 87 years, living in Rio de Janeiro. The adductor pollicis muscle was also studied in the human anatomy lab as well as in normal healthy volunteers using CAT scans and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging to ensure that only the adductor pollicis was included in measurement of muscle thickness with a Lange caliper. To standardize the measurement, the methodology was detailed, with subjects sitting with the dominant hand dangling over the homolateral thigh and the elbow bent at approximately a 90° angle. The Lange caliper was applied at a pressure of 10 g/mm², pinching the adductor pollicis muscle at the vertex of an imaginary angle between the thumb and the index finger. The average of 3 consecutive measurements was considered to be the muscle thickness. RESULTS: This study provides the first estimates of adductor pollicis thickness in normal healthy subjects as an anthropometric parameter. The normal values in the dominant hand for men were 12.5 ± 2.8 mm (mean ± SD), median 12 mm, and for women were 10.5 ± 2.3 mm, median 10 mm.OBJETIVO: Padronizar a medida da espessura do músculo adutor do polegar em adultos saudáveis, para futuras avaliações como parâmetro antropométrico. INDIVÍDUOS E MÉTODOS: Foram estudados 421 adultos saudáveis, oriundos de vários municípios do Rio de Janeiro, de ambos os sexos e nas faixas etárias compreendidas entre 18 a 25 anos, 26 a 45 anos, 46 a 65 anos e mais de 65 anos. Após a confirmação pelos estudos radiológicos e anatômicos, concluindo que com a técnica empregada, nenhum outro músculo além do adutor do polegar foi incluído na medição, foi elaborado o seguinte método: Com o indivíduo sentado, mão dominante repousando sobre o joelho homolateral, cotovelo em ângulo de aproximadamente noventa graus sobre o membro inferior, foi utilizado o paquímetro de Lange exercendo uma pressão contínua de 10g/mm² para pinçar o músculo adutor no vértice de um ângulo imaginário formado pela extensão do polegar e o dedo indicador. A média de três aferições foi considerada como a medida da espessura do músculo adutor. RESULTADOS: A média obtida para a espessura do músculo adutor do polegar, na mão dominante, no sexo masculino foi de 12,5 ± 2,8 mm, com uma mediana de 12 mm e no sexo feminino foi de 10,5 ± 2,3 mm, com uma mediana de 10 mm
