Adaptation of a tridimensional gravimetric model to the North Patagonian Massif area
The North Patagonian Massif is an almost undeformed plateau surrounded by basins with some degree of deformation from which it stands between 500 to 700 m. The massif suffered a sudden uplift of about 1200 m in the Paleogene, hypothetically, caused by epeirogenic movements. The latter affirmation is based on the presence of undeformed marine formational units in the massif, which show some degree of tertiary deformation in the surrounding basins. An adaptation of a tridimensional gravimetric model to the North Patagonian Massif area was made with the aim ofcharacterize this scarcely studied area that have interesting characteristics. To make the adaptation and analysis of the results, a tridimensional and interactive gravity and magnetic modeling software called IGMAS+ was used and the Bouguer anomaly data were extracted of the EGM2008 geopotential model. A difference between the calculated and the observed surfaces of -21 mGal in mean value can be observed in the original model for the study area. A new fit was made in the area, and a difference between surfaces of -5,4 mGal in mean value was achieved which was considerably better than the original model fit for the NPM. The Mohorovicic discontinuity of the model was extracted and mapped. A crust with a thick between 35 and 45 km could be observed in the massif area surrounded by lower thickness areas in its North, West and East limits. No information about the South limit is available since this area remained outside the original model.Fil: Gómez Dacal, María Laura. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Processing and Inversion of Airborne Gravity Gradient Data
In this thesis, a data-driven method for determining and reducing noise in AGG data will be presented first. The new noise reduction method is based on the idea of iteratively projecting survey data onto a lower level, upward continuing the data back to the original survey height, and then subtracting the upward continued data from the survey data. This method is successfully applied to the AGG data over Karasjok, Norway. The results show that the new noise reduction method can detect and reduce some high-frequency noise. Next, a fast equivalent source approach based on Landweber iteration and Gauss-FFT is developed. By applying the method to a synthetic dataset, the method shows great efficiency. Subsequently, two applications to real data over Karasjok are presented. The first is to jointly denoise the data with carefully selected parameters. The results are comparable to the routinely processed data which represents the industry standard. The second is to estimate densities of the topography in Karasjok with the data. The results show that the estimation method is a fast way to acquire an overview of densities of topography when only sparse petrophysical samples are available. At last, to obtain detailed density distributions of the survey area and evaluate the possibilities for mineralization, a stochastic inversion constrained by a prior lithology model and petrophysical data is applied to the AGG data. By inverting various combinations of AGG components, the results suggest that noise reduction prior to inversion is not necessary when the existing noise level is low and behaves like zero-mean Gaussian noise. The results also indicate that the constructed and the measured components both can be used for inversion and the inclusion of more than four components in the inversion does not provide additional information. From the acquired density models, insights into potential mineralization in the Karasjok area are provided

Implications on oil trapping in the Kifl field of Iraq through geophysical investigations
Potential field geophysical measurements were conducted in the west of Kifl region in central Iraq to image a plausible oil-trapping reservoir. Ground-based magnetometry and gravimetry surveys were conducted to investigate this region by covering an area of 16 24 km by designing a regular grid spacing of 250 m. After preprocessing potential field data, different filters were utilized to separate the residuals from the regional anomalies. The complicated tectonic setting of the studied area was imaged by recognition of the fault system through simulation of the magnetic and gravity anomalies, which facilitates the configuration display of the oil-trapping mechanism. The geometry of a fault system was derived from parametric inversion of gravity data. The magnetic anomalies were extended with the trends of NS, NW, and NE and reached a maximum value of 55 nT. However, the gravity anomalies appeared with the same extensions and values ranging from -3.3 to 1.5 mGal. The intense magnetic susceptibility amount of the reservoir rocks is arising from chemical processes and iron-oxide ion replacements, accompanied by the migration and accumulation of hydrocarbon. Incorporating the results from the Euler’s depth estimation, parametric data modeling along with logging data assisted simultaneous modeling of the magnetic and gravity data. The 2D geological model of the subsurface layers at the Kifl area presents a graben-horst fault system within a thick sequence of sediment. Geological characteristics extracted from geophysical data modeling provided insightful information on the nature and essence of the hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Kifl area. It has formed through tectonic deformation and tension over the Arabian plate during the Permian – Paleocene cycle. Hence, it can be concluded that the aforementioned fault system has divided the hydrocarbon reservoirs
Lithospheric 3D gravity modelling using upper-mantle density constraints: Towards a characterization of the crustal configuration in the North Patagonian Massif area, Argentina
The North Patagonian Massif is an Argentinean plateau that has an average height of 1200 m and stands from 500 to 700 m above the neighboring areas. During Paleogene, it suffered a sudden uplift of more than 1200 m without noticeable internal deformation; thus, it could be related to isostatic disequilibrium. To shed light on the geodynamic development of the area it is necessary to characterize the present-day configuration of the crust. In this study, a lithospheric-scale 3D density model was developed by integrating all the available data of the area with the objective of assessing the depth of the crust–mantle discontinuity (Moho). During the construction of the initial density model, we tested different mantle density scenarios obtained using P- and S-wave velocities from tomographic models, converting them into densities and comparing the conversions with densities obtained from xenoliths. Below the North Patagonian Massif plateau, we have derived a Moho depth between 40 and 50 km which is from 2 to 7 km deeper than its surroundings. There is an evident correlation between high topography and deep Moho that would indicate isostatic equilibrium at present. The model results provide a new approach to the Moho depth in an area where there is no seismic constraining information about this discontinuity. In addition, we found a spatial correlation between the variation of the mean crustal density and the location of the Paleozoic terranes that were proposed to constitute the basement of Argentina.
