    QueRIE: Collaborative Database Exploration

    Interactive database exploration is a key task in information mining. However, users who lack SQL expertise or familiarity with the database schema face great difficulties in performing this task. To aid these users, we developed the QueRIE system for personalized query recommendations. QueRIE continuously monitors the user’s querying behavior and finds matching patterns in the system’s query log, in an attempt to identify previous users with similar information needs. Subsequently, QueRIE uses these “similar” users and their queries to recommend queries that the current user may find interesting. In this work we describe an instantiation of the QueRIE framework, where the active user’s session is represented by a set of query fragments. The recorded fragments are used to identify similar query fragments in the previously recorded sessions, which are in turn assembled in potentially interesting queries for the active user. We show through experimentation that the proposed method generates meaningful recommendations on real-life traces from the SkyServer database and propose a scalable design that enables the incremental update of similarities, making real-time computations on large amounts of data feasible. Finally, we compare this fragment-based instantiation with our previously proposed tuple-based instantiation discussing the advantages and disadvantages of each approach

    Monitoring Dynamic Spatial Fields Using Responsive Geosensor Networks

    Many environmental phenomena (e.g., changes in global levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide) can be modeled as variations of attributes over regions of space and time, called dynamic spatial fields. The goal of this project is to provide efficient ways for sensor networks to monitor such fields, and to report significant changes in them. The focus is on qualitative changes, such as splitting of areas or emergence of holes in a region of study. The approach is to develop qualitative and topological methods to deal with changes. Qualitative properties form a small, discrete space, whereas quantitative values form a large, continuous space, and this enables efficiencies to be gained over traditional quantitative methods. The combinatorial map model of the spatial embedding of the sensor network is rich enough so that for each sensor, its position, and the distances and bearings of neighboring sensors, are easily computed. The sensors are responsive to changes to the spatial field, so that sensors are activated in the vicinity of interesting developments in the field, while sensors are deactivated in quiescent locations. All computation and message passing is local , with no centralized control. Optimization is addressed through use of techniques in qualitative representation and reasoning, and efficient update through a dynamic and responsive underlying spatial framework. Effective deployment of very large arrays of sensors for environmental monitoring has important scientific and societal benefits. The project is integrated with the NSF IGERT program on Sensor Science, Engineering, and Informatics at the University of Maine, which will enhance educational and outreach opportunities.     A Hybrid Model Schema Matching Using Constraint-Based and Instance-Based

    Schema matching is an important process in the Enterprise Information Integration (EII) which is at the level of the back end to solve the problems due to the schematic heterogeneity. This paper is a summary of preliminary result work of the model development stage as part of research on the development of models and prototype of hybrid schema matching that combines two methods, namely constraint-based and instance-based. The discussion includes a general description of the proposed models and the development of models, start from requirement analysis, data type conversion, matching mechanism, database support, constraints and instance extraction, matching and compute the similarity, preliminary result, user verification, verified result, dataset for testing, as well as the performance measurement. Based on result experiment on 36 datasets of heterogeneous RDBMS, it obtained the highest P value is 100.00% while the lowest is 71.43%; The highest R value is 100.00% while the lowest is 75.00%; and F-Measure highest value is 100.00% while the lowest is 81.48%. Unsuccessful matching on the model still happens, including use of an id attribute with data type as autoincrement; using codes that are defined in the same way but different meanings; and if encountered in common instance with the same definition but different meaning

    Reverse spatial visual top-k query

    With the wide application of mobile Internet techniques an location-based services (LBS), massive multimedia data with geo-tags has been generated and collected. In this paper, we investigate a novel type of spatial query problem, named reverse spatial visual top- kk query (RSVQ k ) that aims to retrieve a set of geo-images that have the query as one of the most relevant geo-images in both geographical proximity and visual similarity. Existing approaches for reverse top- kk queries are not suitable to address this problem because they cannot effectively process unstructured data, such as image. To this end, firstly we propose the definition of RSVQ k problem and introduce the similarity measurement. A novel hybrid index, named VR 2 -Tree is designed, which is a combination of visual representation of geo-image and R-Tree. Besides, an extension of VR 2 -Tree, called CVR 2 -Tree is introduced and then we discuss the calculation of lower/upper bound, and then propose the optimization technique via CVR 2 -Tree for further pruning. In addition, a search algorithm named RSVQ k algorithm is developed to support the efficient RSVQ k query. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on four geo-image datasets, and the results illustrate that our approach can address the RSVQ k problem effectively and efficiently

    Spatial data infrastructures model for developing countries: A case study of Nigeria

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial TechnologiesThis research explores the basics of SDI, and investigates the National SDI of different countries. Further, the research analyses SDI implementation in developing country with specific reference to the National Geospatial Data Infrastructure (NGDI) of Nigeria. The research assesses the status and the milestones of NGDI implementation using key SDI components as assessment variables. These components were grouped into four classes: Policy and Legal Issues, Technical, Funding and People. A questionnaire survey via email was conducted on the stakeholders and users of geoinformation in Nigeria. From the analysis, the NGDI has an advantage of having a national policy backing its implementation and the establishment of the coordinating body. However, the lack of SDI directive and funding are major hurdles in the implementation of the NGDI making it lack behind most of the selected case study countries in other key components. Nigeria is also found to be applying a Mixed Model of NSDI implementation as both product model and process model are evident in the NGDI. In the real sense of access network and data sharing, NGDI is yet to be operational, though the project is going on
