Technology Criticism in the Classroom (Chapter in The Nature of Technology)

I first heard about a tragedy in Tucson, not from major television news networks, but from a direct message sent by a politically-active friend who was attending the political gathering where a mass shooting took place, including the shooting of an Arizona congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords. While the television news sputtered around trying to offer details (initially wrongly claiming that she was dead, likely from pressure to be the first to report big news), I found myself reading Google News, piecing together Facebook posts, e-mailing friends and reading Twitter updates

My Systems Thinking Before and After a Year of Social Systems Sciences

The paper reflects on the following three systems thinking books: Fred E. Emery & E L Trist. Towards a Social Ecology, Plenum Press, New York, 1973: Due to many references both personal and in print made to Eric Trist, and, to a lesser degree, Fred Emery, I wanted to familiarize myself with their work. Russell L. Ackoff & Fred E. Emery. On Purposeful Systems, Intersystems, Seaside CA, 1972: I had wanted to read it since having sat in on several sessions of your course in behavioral variables last spring. Russell L. Ackoff. Creating the Corporate Future, J. Wiley & Sons, New York, 1983: Assigned for the course. I went ahead to read the whole thing in order to get started on our interactive design project, and also to do my own personal idealized design

Always a Novice: Feminist Learning and Leadership Practice

Learning about the theory and practice of intersectional feminism played an important role in my development as a librarian and a library director, and the ongoing study of feminism continues to be integral to my leadership work. Th e definition of feminism that I prefer is the concise and powerful statement by bell hooks: “feminism seeks to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression.” While I did not attend a library and information science graduate program with the express intention of becoming a library director, that is where I find myself. And while I have always considered myself a feminist, I had never studied feminism until recently and I am still new to feminist theory and practice. In sharing my experiences of embracing a novice mindset I hope to encourage others who support feminism—and especially intersectional feminist practice—to consider a leadership path in libraries

Bruno Pontecorvo and modern neutrino physics

In this review, dedicated to the centenary of the birth of the great neutrino physicists Bruno Pontecorvo, I am discussing proposed by him radiochemical method of neutrino detection, his idea of the μ-e universality of the weak interaction and proposal of the accelerator neutrino experiment which allowed to proof that νe and νμ are different particles. In some details I discuss Pontecorvo’s pioneer idea of neutrino masses, mixing and oscillations and the development of this idea by Pontecorvo and Gribov and Pontecorvo and myself

The Grotesque of Luigi Chiarelli: La maschera e il volto.

It deals with the way to look into the meaning of grotesque and differentiate it from humour, tragedy and satire and illustrates the coexistence of all these elements regarding grotesque. To do this I base myself on Luigi Chiarelli’s play La maschera e il volto. Grottesco in tre atti and, with the analysis of the play from a showman’s point of view (structure, space, time, items, sounds, margin notes, characters), I see the meaning of the mask how it goes towards the face to determine the individual freedom from social prejudices, which conditions his reactions

The Mystery of the People Called Shakers, Laid Open, and Their Ministration Exploded, for Its Falsities and Impositions

A reprint of an article appearing in the Boston Gazette, and the Country Journal. June 15, 1789. Issue 1810. Page 1. THIS piece is design\u27d for the conviction of the people called SHAKERS, and for the good of all generations; therefore I shall pretty much omit every thing else, and proceed directly to my great design, which I shall effect by a dialogue between the Elder of that people and myself the Author, and A will stand for Author, and E for Elder

    Emerging

The world where goals and success are of sole importance is not a reality, it is an illusion. Jennifer Karey: A freshman at James Madison University, Jennifer wrote Emerging for GWRIT 102D. Her essay Flash: September Eleventh is also published in this issue of e-Vision. This essay reflects the very real emotions that I struggled through in the wake of my aunt\u27s death. In coming to peace with her decision, I learned more than I ever could have about myself and about my direction in life. I have so much to be thankful for, and I think that people rarely step back and see all the good around them. So many good things have happened to me…a wonderful person has entered my life…I am pursuing my childhood dream of becoming a doctor…and I am enjoying everything in between and along the way. I try to take in as much of that goodness as I can. To my grandparents, who have endured tremendous pain in their daughter\u27s passing, I hope seeing her remembered here will bring you some comfort. To my Dad, who has remained strong time and time again in spite of so many times of family crisis….thank you. You truly inspire me. To Sue, you have taught me so much about myself and about who I want to become…we will love you and remember you always

Stockton, Feby. 9 - 1903221 E. Acacia St.Mr. John MuirMartinez, Calif.Dear Sir and Friend:I send you by separate package another copy of the picture I made of you. It is the very best I have been able to get from the negative, which has since been tinkered and spoiled.I hope I may have your permission to try again some time.My land application will be approved this month so the Surveyor General writes me and I will soon own a part of the Sierras myself. I hope to build a cabin on it this summer where I can retire when I periodically grow sick of civilization.Yours sincerelyEdward Hughes.0316

Have we ever been so (un)happy? The lack of innocence and a (brief) perception of the science teaching complexity

In this article I report the course of my school and professional education, highlighting what attracted pleasure in my early school years, what I learned in therms of disciplinary actions, obeying without questioning during high school and graduation, the progressive 'loss of innocence ', as throwing myself as a teacher without conveying the sense I would like to impose in my life, the new fascination with the' method of discovery 'and' learning by doing 'till I see myself as a fruit of the system's interests and realize that there are no absolute certaintie
