Target recognitions in multiple camera CCTV using colour constancy
People tracking using colour feature in crowded scene through CCTV network have been a popular and at the same time a very difficult topic in computer vision. It is mainly because of the difficulty for the acquisition of intrinsic signatures of targets from a single view of the scene. Many factors, such as variable illumination conditions and viewing angles, will induce illusive modification of intrinsic signatures of targets. The objective of this paper is to verify if colour constancy (CC) approach really helps people tracking in CCTV network system. We have testified a number of CC algorithms together with various colour descriptors, to assess the efficiencies of people recognitions from real multi-camera i-LIDS data set via Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC). It is found that when CC is applied together with some form of colour restoration mechanisms such as colour transfer, the recognition performance can be improved by at least a factor of two. An elementary luminance based CC coupled with a pixel based colour transfer algorithm, together with experimental results are reported in the present paper
Aerial Vehicle Tracking by Adaptive Fusion of Hyperspectral Likelihood Maps
Hyperspectral cameras can provide unique spectral signatures for consistently
distinguishing materials that can be used to solve surveillance tasks. In this
paper, we propose a novel real-time hyperspectral likelihood maps-aided
tracking method (HLT) inspired by an adaptive hyperspectral sensor. A moving
object tracking system generally consists of registration, object detection,
and tracking modules. We focus on the target detection part and remove the
necessity to build any offline classifiers and tune a large amount of
hyperparameters, instead learning a generative target model in an online manner
for hyperspectral channels ranging from visible to infrared wavelengths. The
key idea is that, our adaptive fusion method can combine likelihood maps from
multiple bands of hyperspectral imagery into one single more distinctive
representation increasing the margin between mean value of foreground and
background pixels in the fused map. Experimental results show that the HLT not
only outperforms all established fusion methods but is on par with the current
state-of-the-art hyperspectral target tracking frameworks.Comment: Accepted at the International Conference on Computer Vision and

Infrared face recognition: a comprehensive review of methodologies and databases
Automatic face recognition is an area with immense practical potential which
includes a wide range of commercial and law enforcement applications. Hence it
is unsurprising that it continues to be one of the most active research areas
of computer vision. Even after over three decades of intense research, the
state-of-the-art in face recognition continues to improve, benefitting from
advances in a range of different research fields such as image processing,
pattern recognition, computer graphics, and physiology. Systems based on
visible spectrum images, the most researched face recognition modality, have
reached a significant level of maturity with some practical success. However,
they continue to face challenges in the presence of illumination, pose and
expression changes, as well as facial disguises, all of which can significantly
decrease recognition accuracy. Amongst various approaches which have been
proposed in an attempt to overcome these limitations, the use of infrared (IR)
imaging has emerged as a particularly promising research direction. This paper
presents a comprehensive and timely review of the literature on this subject.
Our key contributions are: (i) a summary of the inherent properties of infrared
imaging which makes this modality promising in the context of face recognition,
(ii) a systematic review of the most influential approaches, with a focus on
emerging common trends as well as key differences between alternative
methodologies, (iii) a description of the main databases of infrared facial
images available to the researcher, and lastly (iv) a discussion of the most
promising avenues for future research.Comment: Pattern Recognition, 2014. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap

A Comparative Evaluation of Heart Rate Estimation Methods using Face Videos
This paper presents a comparative evaluation of methods for remote heart rate
estimation using face videos, i.e., given a video sequence of the face as
input, methods to process it to obtain a robust estimation of the subjects
heart rate at each moment. Four alternatives from the literature are tested,
three based in hand crafted approaches and one based on deep learning. The
methods are compared using RGB videos from the COHFACE database. Experiments
show that the learning-based method achieves much better accuracy than the hand
crafted ones. The low error rate achieved by the learning based model makes
possible its application in real scenarios, e.g. in medical or sports
environments.Comment: Accepted in "IEEE International Workshop on Medical Computing

Fair comparison of skin detection approaches on publicly available datasets
Skin detection is the process of discriminating skin and non-skin regions in
a digital image and it is widely used in several applications ranging from hand
gesture analysis to track body parts and face detection. Skin detection is a
challenging problem which has drawn extensive attention from the research
community, nevertheless a fair comparison among approaches is very difficult
due to the lack of a common benchmark and a unified testing protocol. In this
work, we investigate the most recent researches in this field and we propose a
fair comparison among approaches using several different datasets. The major
contributions of this work are an exhaustive literature review of skin color
detection approaches, a framework to evaluate and combine different skin
detector approaches, whose source code is made freely available for future
research, and an extensive experimental comparison among several recent methods
which have also been used to define an ensemble that works well in many
different problems. Experiments are carried out in 10 different datasets
including more than 10000 labelled images: experimental results confirm that
the best method here proposed obtains a very good performance with respect to
other stand-alone approaches, without requiring ad hoc parameter tuning. A
MATLAB version of the framework for testing and of the methods proposed in this
paper will be freely available from https://github.com/LorisNann
QUEST Hierarchy for Hyperspectral Face Recognition
Face recognition is an attractive biometric due to the ease in which photographs of the human face can be acquired and processed. The non-intrusive ability of many surveillance systems permits face recognition applications to be used in a myriad of environments. Despite decades of impressive research in this area, face recognition still struggles with variations in illumination, pose and expression not to mention the larger challenge of willful circumvention. The integration of supporting contextual information in a fusion hierarchy known as QUalia Exploitation of Sensor Technology (QUEST) is a novel approach for hyperspectral face recognition that results in performance advantages and a robustness not seen in leading face recognition methodologies. This research demonstrates a method for the exploitation of hyperspectral imagery and the intelligent processing of contextual layers of spatial, spectral, and temporal information. This approach illustrates the benefit of integrating spatial and spectral domains of imagery for the automatic extraction and integration of novel soft features (biometric). The establishment of the QUEST methodology for face recognition results in an engineering advantage in both performance and efficiency compared to leading and classical face recognition techniques. An interactive environment for the testing and expansion of this recognition framework is also provided
