    Small Electric Vehicles

    Get PDF
This edited open access book gives a comprehensive overview of small and lightweight electric three- and four-wheel vehicles with an international scope. The present status of small electric vehicle (SEV) technologies, the market situation and main hindering factors for market success as well as options to attain a higher market share including new mobility concepts are highlighted. An increased usage of SEVs can have different impacts which are highlighted in the book in regard to sustainable transport, congestion, electric grid and transport-related potentials. To underline the effects these vehicles can have in urban areas or rural areas, several case studies are presented covering outcomes of pilot projects and studies in Europe. A study of the operation and usage in the Global South extends the scope to a global scale. Furthermore, several concept studies and vehicle concepts on the market give a more detailed overview and show the deployment in different applications

Incorporation of the Roadify API in Ride and Bike Sharing Systems

    Get PDF
Ride and bike share companies have an interest in optimizing trips involving multi-modal transit. To make these services more user-friendly and efficient, we proposed that transit data should be integrated into them. Providing transit data to rideshare drivers in particular would increase their productivity and profits. To develop a plan for partnership between these companies and our sponsor, we developed pricing models and assessed how the APIs would work together. A tiered subscription model with a free trial base became the pricing structure of choice for a partnership with ridesharing company Uber, following research and discussions with our sponsor. Despite initial promise, we ruled out bike sharing as a possibility due to limited digital architecture and weaker financial incentives

Solving Commuting Challenges with RTS Bus Rapid Transit (RTS-BRT) Rochester, NY

    Get PDF
The public transport service in Rochester, NY, is inefficient in terms of reliability, safety, comfort, security, waiting, transfer, and longer commute hours. The public transportation system needs significant transformation to overcome this alleviating issue and relieve the burden on low-income residents, pedestrians, and non-motorized vehicle users. The research objective of this thesis is to advance and discover a connection pattern between transportation, urban sprawl, poverty, and unemployment in Rochester, NY. It targets the low-income resident’s detachment from diverse uses, residential settlement, locations of jobs, and transportation options. The research analyses how-: people commute to work, how long the commute takes, the rate of car ownership, and the financial burdens of owning a car. Furthermore, the research goes deeper into the energy demands and emission reduction caused by the transport sector. The data collection method used for the analysis is metanalysis, gathering data from local authority websites, organizations, research papers, and media. Sustainable transport can be a catalyst for urban development that prioritizes equity, accessibility, and time savings for the low-income commuter while reducing emissions and increasing traffic safety. Thus, all benefactors are a modal shift to lower-carbon transport systems such as walking, cycling, public transport, alternative fuel vehicles, modifying roads, and minimizing travel time. The scope of this study is to assess the environmental, social, and economic impacts caused by car dependency in Rochester, NY. As a result, the research probes the opportunities and challenges of leveraging Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) while introducing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system

Feasibility Study of Electric Bicycle Sharing in the Xiasha District of Hangzhou, China

    Get PDF
Traffic and pollution are persistently growing problems in Hangzhou, one of the oldest and most modern cities in China. To offset this, Hangzhou Omnipay Co., Ltd. sponsored this project to determine if an electric bike sharing system would be feasible in the Xiasha District of Hangzhou. If the system proves effective, Omnipay can implement it in the rest of the city. Electric bikes produce no direct emissions and occupy less road space than automobiles, circumventing the common issues of cars. This project used various onsite research techniques including a survey, focus group, and interviews to discern if there is adequate demand for this system and what its environmental influence may be. This report concludes that an electric bike sharing system would be feasible

The CLOSER project has been set to analyse the interfaces and interconnectionsbetween long distance transport networks and local/regional transport networks of allmodes. The project is funded within the Seventh Framework Programme of theEuropean Commission, under the topic TPT-2008.0.0.13 “New mobility/organisationalschemes: interconnection between short and long-distance transport networks”.The objective of WP5 of CLOSER is to accomplish in-depth case studies to deepenand validate the understanding of results obtained in Work packages 2, 3 and 4. Thiswill be achieved by:- Developing a joint assessment and evaluation framework for the case studies, incorporating knowledge that has been obtained in WP 2, WP 3 and WP 4- Carrying out the case studies- Synthesising the results of the case studies in order to give inputs for thedevelopment of recommendations in WP 6.The deliverable at hand summarises the seven case studies that have been conductedin the CLOSER project: Leipzig-Halle airport (Germany) Armentiéres station (France) Oslo bus terminal Vaterland (Norway) Port of Helsinki (Finland) Thessaloniki port (Greece) Constantza port (Romania) Vilnius Airport (Lithuania

Promoting Alternative Transportation for the WPI Community

    Get PDF
This project focused on promoting and improving the use of sustainable, alternative transportation by the WPI community. We conducted research of other universities with successful alternative transportation programs, surveyed the WPI community’s transportation habits and preferences, created maps of where the WPI community comes to campus from, and interviewed key figures. Based on our findings, we produced a list of recommendations aimed at promoting and increasing the use of sustainable, alternative transportation by the WPI community

This project focused on developing a plan to promote and provide more sustainable transportation options for the WPI community. We conducted a survey to determine the primary methods of transportation used by the WPI community to get to and from campus, conducted focus groups to understand why they used those specific methods and interviewed other colleges and universities to see what worked well on other campuses. Based on our findings, we developed recommendations to increase access to and promote sustainable transportation on the WPI campus
