Adaptive subframe allocation for next generation multimedia delivery over hybrid LTE unicast broadcast

The continued global roll-out of long term evolution (LTE) networks is providing mobile users with perpetually increasing ubiquitous access to a rich selection of high quality multimedia. Interactive viewing experiences including 3-D or free-viewpoint video require the synchronous delivery of multiple video streams. This paper presents a novel hybrid unicast broadcast synchronisation (HUBS) framework to synchronously deliver multi-stream content. Previous techniques on hybrid LTE implementations include staggered modulation and coding scheme grouping, adaptive modulation coding or implementing error recover techniques; the work presented here instead focuses on dynamic allocation of resources between unicast and broadcast, improving stream synchronisation as well as overall cell resource usage. Furthermore, the HUBS framework has been developed to work within the limitations imposed by the LTE specification. Performance evaluation of the framework is performed through the simulation of probable future scenarios, where a popular live event is broadcast with stereo 3-D or multi-angle companion views interactively offered to capable users. The proposed framework forms a ``HUBS group'' that monitors the radio bearer queues to establish a time lead or lag between broadcast and unicast streams. Since unicast and broadcast share the same radio resources, the number of subframes allocated to the broadcast transmission are then dynamically increased or decreased to minimise the average lead/lag time offset between the streams. Dynamic allocation showed improvements for all services across the cell, whilst keeping streams synchronised despite increased user loading

Towards an LTE hybrid unicast broadcast content delivery framework

The era of ubiquitous access to a rich selection of interactive and high quality multimedia has begun; with it, significant challenges in data demand have been placed on mobile network technologies. Content creators and broadcasters alike have embraced the additional capabilities offered by network delivery; diversifying content offerings and providing viewers with far greater choice. Mobile broadcast services introduced as part of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard, that are to be further enhanced with the release of 5G, do aid in spectrally efficient delivery of popular live multimedia to many mobile devices, but, ultimately rely on all users expressing interest in the same single stream. The research presented herein explores the development of a standards aligned, multi-stream aware framework; allowing mobile network operators the efficiency gains of broadcast whilst continuing to offer personalised experiences to subscribers. An open source, system level simulation platform is extended to support broadcast, characterised and validated. This is followed by the implementation of a Hybrid Unicast Broadcast Synchronisation (HUBS) framework able to dynamically vary broadcast resource allocation. The HUBS framework is then further expanded to make use of scalable video content

This thesis dissertation presents background push Content Download Services as an efficient mechanism to deliver pre-produced television content through existing broadcast networks. Nowadays, network operators dedicate a considerable amount of network resources to live streaming live, through both broadcast and unicast connections. This service offering responds solely to commercial requirements: Content must be available anytime and anywhere. However, from a strictly academic point of view, live streaming is only a requirement for live content and not for pre-produced content. Moreover, broadcasting is only efficient when the content is sufficiently popular. The services under study in this thesis use residual capacity in broadcast networks to push popular, pre-produced content to storage capacity in customer premises equipment. The proposal responds only to efficiency requirements. On one hand, it creates value from network resources otherwise unused. On the other hand, it delivers popular pre-produced content in the most efficient way: through broadcast download services. The results include models for the popularity and the duration of television content, valuable for any research work dealing with file-based delivery of television content. Later, the thesis evaluates the residual capacity available in broadcast networks through empirical studies. These results are used in simulations to evaluate the performance of background push content download services in different scenarios and for different applications. The evaluation proves that this kind of services can become a great asset for the delivery of television contentFraile Gil, F. (2013). [EN] Currently, there is a wide variety of multimedia content distribution technologies, consumer devices, as well as types of content. In terms of distribution technologies, such content can be delivered either over broadcast networks, such as DVB networks, or over broadband networks, such as IP networks (e.g. over the Internet). The coordination and convergence between the two types of technologies to distribute related content offers great potential to content providers, as well as great benefits to consumers (a proof of this is the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV or HbbTV standard). However, the reception of related content from different hybrid networks (broadcast/broadband) entails significant delay variability, so a number of important challenges must be overcome, such as the need for mechanisms to ensure synchronized consumption of such content, either on the same device or on different devices (local or remote). We have specified, implemented and evaluated synchronization solutions for hybrid content playback processes (broadcast and/or broadband networks) both in multi-device environments, between local devices (Inter-Device Synchronization or IDES), and in multi-user environments, between distributed network recipients (Inter-Destination Media Synchronization or IDMS), including the synchronization of multi-sensory effects. An end-to-end platform has been designed and implemented for the generation, distribution (adaptive) and consumption of related hybrid content, both on a single device and on multiple local (e.g., multiscreen scenario) or remote (e.g., Social TV) devices. Traditional (2D) and omnidirectional (360) multimedia content has been generated and prepared, enriched with multisensory effects that enhance the degree of realism and immersiveness for users. The platform is compatible with the HbbTV standard and, in addition, includes efficient solutions for key aspects that are not specified in that standard, but are necessary for the successful implementation of hybrid and multi-device TV services on it, such as: the need for a buffer for broadcast content (existing and optional up to the HbbTV 2. 0.2); mechanisms for signaling, association and description of content available and related to the main content; coordination and interaction mechanisms between consumption devices; or synchronization solutions to align in time the consumption of content in a satisfactory way. The results obtained in the evaluation carried out show that the level of synchronization acquired between the reproduction processes of the different types of content available through different transmission technologies reaches sufficient values to provide the user with a consumption with an imperceptible level of asynchronies. The accuracy achieved has resulted in a very satisfactory QoE for the consumer, offering him a complete content consumption ecosystem that includes traditional multimedia content as well as omnidirectional and mulsemedia content.Marfil Reguero, D. Supporting collocated and at-a-distance experiences with TV and VR displays

Televisions (TVs) and VR Head-Mounted Displays (VR HMDs) are used in shared and social spaces in the home. This thesis posits that these displays do not sufficiently reflect the collocated, social contexts in which they reside, nor do they sufficiently support shared experiences at-a-distance. This thesis explores how the role of TVs and VR HMDs can go beyond presenting a single entertainment experience, instead supporting social and shared use in both collocated and at-a-distance contexts. For collocated TV, this thesis demonstrates that the TV can be augmented to facilitate multi-user interaction, support shared and independent activities and multi-user use through multi-view display technology, and provide awareness of the multi-screen activity of those in the room, allowing the TV to reflect the social context in which it resides. For at-a-distance TV, existing smart TVs are shown to be capable of supporting synchronous at-a-distance activity, broadening the scope of media consumption beyond the four walls of the home. For VR HMDs, collocated proximate persons can be seamlessly brought into mixed reality VR experiences based on engagement, improving VR HMD usability. Applied to at-a-distance interactions, these shared mixed reality VR experiences can enable more immersive social experiences that approximate viewing together as if in person, compared to at-a-distance TV. Through an examination of TVs and VR HMDs, this thesis demonstrates that consumer display technology can better support users to interact, and share experiences and activities, with those they are close to

Audiovisual practice in South African correctional centers: a case study of the department of correctional services' AV Unit and its outputs

Summaries in English, Tswana and AfrikaansThis qualitative research explores a case study of the Department of Correctional Services’ audio-visual (AV) unit and outputs. The purpose of a non-security AV unit within the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and how it functions within a strict and rigid context of a correctional services’ environment are established. This research further explores, analyses and discusses the meanings and ideologies that are embedded within the DCS-produced moving images and the current representation that they create of the DCS as an institution in the South African democratic context. Anchored in an interpretivist paradigm, this study is conducted through case study and content analysis approaches. This research area is under-researched, which necessitates a case study approach, as it enables the study to be explored for its complexity and particularity as a single case. The content analysis approach applies to the findings of the following data collection methods: an in-depth interview, a thematic consideration of the DCS documents, and the DCS videos. The findings of the DCS documents are further compared with the findings of the in-depth interview. The validity and credibility of the findings are ensured through a triangulation of theories, data collection methods, and interpretation methods, in order to avoid a narrow approach to both data collection and interpretation. The theoretical framework includes semiotics, multimodal discourse analysis (MDA), ideology in moving images, framing theory, and ethics in producing moving images. The meanings of the DCSproduced videos are analysed through semiotic and multimodal discourse analytic methods. The key findings from the different data sets of the DCS reveal an AV practice that lacks adequate strategic operation and management characterised by insufficient staff numbers, lack of guiding documentation, and videos which – amongst other important findings – publicise political leaders rather than the institution itself. Communication ScienceM.A. (Communication Science
