    A survey of localization in wireless sensor network

    Localization is one of the key techniques in wireless sensor network. The location estimation methods can be classified into target/source localization and node self-localization. In target localization, we mainly introduce the energy-based method. Then we investigate the node self-localization methods. Since the widespread adoption of the wireless sensor network, the localization methods are different in various applications. And there are several challenges in some special scenarios. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of these challenges: localization in non-line-of-sight, node selection criteria for localization in energy-constrained network, scheduling the sensor node to optimize the tradeoff between localization performance and energy consumption, cooperative node localization, and localization algorithm in heterogeneous network. Finally, we introduce the evaluation criteria for localization in wireless sensor network

    Automotive sensor fusion systems for traffic aware adaptive cruise control

    The autonomous driving (AD) industry is advancing at a rapid pace. New sensing technology for tracking vehicles, controlling vehicle behavior, and communicating with infrastructure are being added to commercial vehicles. These new automotive technologies reduce on road fatalities, improve ride quality, and improve vehicle fuel economy. This research explores two types of automotive sensor fusion systems: a novel radar/camera sensor fusion system using a long shortterm memory (LSTM) neural network (NN) to perform data fusion improving tracking capabilities in a simulated environment and a traditional radar/camera sensor fusion system that is deployed in Mississippi State’s entry in the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge (2019 Chevrolet Blazer) for an adaptive cruise control system (ACC) which functions in on-road applications.     On Simultaneous Localization and Mapping inside the Human Body (Body-SLAM)

    Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) offers a patient-friendly, non-invasive and painless investigation of the entire small intestine, where other conventional wired endoscopic instruments can barely reach. As a critical component of the capsule endoscopic examination, physicians need to know the precise position of the endoscopic capsule in order to identify the position of intestinal disease after it is detected by the video source. To define the position of the endoscopic capsule, we need to have a map of inside the human body. However, since the shape of the small intestine is extremely complex and the RF signal propagates differently in the non-homogeneous body tissues, accurate mapping and localization inside small intestine is very challenging. In this dissertation, we present an in-body simultaneous localization and mapping technique (Body-SLAM) to enhance the positioning accuracy of the WCE inside the small intestine and reconstruct the trajectory the capsule has traveled. In this way, the positions of the intestinal diseases can be accurately located on the map of inside human body, therefore, facilitates the following up therapeutic operations. The proposed approach takes advantage of data fusion from two sources that come with the WCE: image sequences captured by the WCE\u27s embedded camera and the RF signal emitted by the capsule. This approach estimates the speed and orientation of the endoscopic capsule by analyzing displacements of feature points between consecutive images. Then, it integrates this motion information with the RF measurements by employing a Kalman filter to smooth the localization results and generate the route that the WCE has traveled. The performance of the proposed motion tracking algorithm is validated using empirical data from the patients and this motion model is later imported into a virtual testbed to test the performance of the alternative Body-SLAM algorithms. Experimental results show that the proposed Body-SLAM technique is able to provide accurate tracking of the WCE with average error of less than 2.3cm

    Multisensor navigation systems: a remedy for GNSS vulnerabilities?

    Space-based positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) technologies, such as the global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) provide position, velocity, and timing information to an unlimited number of users around the world. In recent years, PNT information has become increasingly critical to the security, safety, and prosperity of the World's population, and is now widely recognized as an essential element of the global information infrastructure. Due to its vulnerabilities and line-of-sight requirements, GNSS alone is unable to provide PNT with the required levels of integrity, accuracy, continuity, and reliability. A multisensor navigation approach offers an effective augmentation in GNSS-challenged environments that holds a promise of delivering robust and resilient PNT. Traditionally, sensors such as inertial measurement units (IMUs), barometers, magnetometers, odometers, and digital compasses, have been used. However, recent trends have largely focused on image-based, terrain-based and collaborative navigation to recover the user location. This paper offers a review of the technological advances that have taken place in PNT over the last two decades, and discusses various hybridizations of multisensory systems, building upon the fundamental GNSS/IMU integration. The most important conclusion of this study is that in order to meet the challenging goals of delivering continuous, accurate and robust PNT to the ever-growing numbers of users, the hybridization of a suite of different PNT solutions is required

    Grid-based Hybrid 3DMA GNSS and Terrestrial Positioning

    The paper discusses the increasing use of hybridized sensor information for GNSS-based localization and navigation, including the use of 3D map-aided GNSS positioning and terrestrial systems based on different geometric measurement principles. However, both GNSS and terrestrial systems are subject to negative impacts from the propagation environment, which can violate the assumptions of conventionally applied parametric state estimators. Furthermore, dynamic parametric state estimation does not account for multi-modalities within the state space leading to an information loss within the prediction step. In addition, the synchronization of non-deterministic multi-rate measurement systems needs to be accounted. In order to address these challenges, the paper proposes the use of a non-parametric filtering method, specifically a 3DMA multi-epoch Grid Filter, for the tight integration of GNSS and terrestrial signals. Specifically, the fusion of GNSS, Ultra-wide Band (UWB) and vehicle motion data is introduced based on a discrete state representation. Algorithmic challenges, including the use of different measurement models and time synchronization, are addressed. In order to evaluate the proposed method, real-world tests were conducted on an urban automotive testbed in both static and dynamic scenarios. We empirically show that we achieve sub-meter accuracy in the static scenario by averaging a positioning error of 0.640.64 m, whereas in the dynamic scenario the average positioning error amounts to 1.621.62 m. The paper provides a proof-of-concept of the introduced method and shows the feasibility of the inclusion of terrestrial signals in a 3DMA positioning framework in order to further enhance localization in GNSS-degraded environments

    Conditional Posterior Cramer-Rao Lower Bound and Distributed Target Tracking in Sensor Networks

    Sequential Bayesian estimation is the process of recursively estimating the state of a dynamical system observed in the presence of noise. Posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) sets a performance limit onany Bayesian estimator for the given dynamical system. The PCRLBdoes not fully utilize the existing measurement information to give anindication of the mean squared error (MSE) of the estimator in the future. In many practical applications, we are more concerned with the value of the bound in the future than in the past. PCRLB is an offline bound, because it averages out the very useful measurement information, which makes it an off-line bound determined only by the system dynamical model, system measurement model and the prior knowledge of the system state at the initial time. This dissertation studies the sequential Bayesian estimation problem and then introduces the notation of conditional PCRLB, which utilizes the existing measurement information up to the current time, and sets the limit on the MSE of any Bayesian estimators at the next time step. This work has two emphases: firstly, we give the mathematically rigorous formulation of the conditional PCRLB as well as the approximate recursive version of conditional PCRLB for nonlinear, possibly non-Gaussian dynamical systems. Secondly, we apply particle filter techniques to compute the numerical values of the conditional PCRLB approximately, which overcomes the integration problems introduced by nonlinear/non-Gaussian systems. Further, we explore several possible applications of the proposed bound to find algorithms that provide improved performance. The primary problem of interest is the sensor selection problem for target tracking in sensor networks. Comparisons are also made between the performance of sensor selection algorithm based on the proposed bound and the existing approaches, such as information driven, nearest neighbor, and PCRLB with renewal strategy, to demonstrate the superior performances of the proposed approach. This dissertation also presents a bandwidth-efficient algorithm for tracking a target in sensor networks using distributed particle filters. This algorithm distributes the computation burden for target tracking over the sensor nodes. Each sensor node transmits a compressed local tracking result to the fusion center by a modified expectationmaximization (EM) algorithm to save the communication bandwidth. The fusion center incorporates the compressed tracking results to give the estimate of the target state. Finally, the target tracking problem in heterogeneous sensor networks is investigated extensively.
