    Pencil Drawing Video Rendering Using Convolutional Networks

    Traditional pencil drawing rendering algorithms when applied to video may suffer from temporal inconsistency and showerdoor effect due to the stochastic noise models employed. This paper attempts to resolve these problems with deep learning. Recently, many research endeavors have demonstrated that feed-forward Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are capable of using a reference image to stylize a whole video sequence while removing the shower-door effect in video style transfer applications. Compared with video style transfer, pencil drawing video is more sensitive to the inconsistency of texture and requires a stronger expression of pencil hatching. Thus, in this paper we develop an approach by combining a latest Line Integral Convolution (LIC) based method, specializing in realistically simulating pencil drawing images, with a new feedforward CNN that can eliminate the shower-door effect successfully. Taking advantage of optical flow, we adopt a feature-maplevel temporal loss function and propose a new framework to avoid the temporal inconsistency between consecutive frames, enhancing the visual impression of pencil strokes and tone. Experimental comparisons with the existing feed-forward CNNs have demonstrated that our method can generate temporally more stable and visually more pleasant pencil drawing video results in a faster manner

    Implementing non-photorealistic rendreing enhancements with real-time performance

    We describe quality and performance enhancements, which work in real-time, to all well-known Non-photorealistic (NPR) rendering styles for use in an interactive context. These include Comic rendering, Sketch rendering, Hatching and Painterly rendering, but we also attempt and justify a widening of the established definition of what is considered NPR. In the individual Chapters, we identify typical stylistic elements of the different NPR styles. We list problems that need to be solved in order to implement the various renderers. Standard solutions available in the literature are introduced and in all cases extended and optimised. In particular, we extend the lighting model of the comic renderer to include a specular component and introduce multiple inter-related but independent geometric approximations which greatly improve rendering performance. We implement two completely different solutions to random perturbation sketching, solve temporal coherence issues for coal sketching and find an unexpected use for 3D textures to implement hatch-shading. Textured brushes of painterly rendering are extended by properties such as stroke-direction and texture, motion, paint capacity, opacity and emission, making them more flexible and versatile. Brushes are also provided with a minimal amount of intelligence, so that they can help in maximising screen coverage of brushes. We furthermore devise a completely new NPR style, which we call super-realistic and show how sample images can be tweened in real-time to produce an image-based six degree-of-freedom renderer performing at roughly 450 frames per second. Performance values for our other renderers all lie between 10 and over 400 frames per second on homePC hardware, justifying our real-time claim. A large number of sample screen-shots, illustrations and animations demonstrate the visual fidelity of our rendered images. In essence, we successfully achieve our attempted goals of increasing the creative, expressive and communicative potential of individual NPR styles, increasing performance of most of them, adding original and interesting visual qualities, and exploring new techniques or existing ones in novel ways.KMBT_363Adobe Acrobat 9.54 Paper Capture Plug-i

    The North American Waterfowl Management Plan, the Service\u27s most recent mandate for management of migratory waterfowl, and recent legislation such as the Farm Bill all underscore the need for a single source of information about the management of waterfowl and their habitat. Much of this information exists in scientific papers, unpublished reports, or has never been recorded, and thus is not readily accessible by waterfowl managers. The need for a waterfowl management handbook was originally suggested to the Office of Information Transfer by personnel in the Service\u27s north-central region. A prototype handbook was developed in 1987 and critiqued by 38 reviewers who provided suggestions on style and substance as well as topics for inclusion. The assistance of these reviewers, who included Federal and State wildlife managers, Federal and State biologists, and scientists in the United States and Canada, is most gratefully acknowledged. This product differs from most Fish and Wildlife Leaflets. It will be issued as a series of chapters over the next several years, each with a unique number, designed to be inserted in an accompanying looseleaf binder. The Table of Contents will be issued when new information is added. Additional copies of leaflets will be printed for distribution to other resource professionals and private landowners. The four main subject categories are tabbed and color coded to allow easy reference and simple filing of future chapters
