    Estimation of airship states and model uncertainties using nonlinear estimators

    This Airships are lighter than air vehicles and due to their growing number of applications, they are becoming attractive for the research community. Most of the applications require an airship autonomous flight controller which needs an accurate model and state information. Usually, airship states are affected by noise and states information can be lost in the case of sensor's faults, while airship model is affected by model inaccuracies and model uncertainties. This paper presents the application of nonlinear and Bayesian estimators for estimating the states and model uncertainties of neutrally buoyant airship. It is considered that minimum sensor measurements are available, and data is corrupted with process and measurement noise. A novel lumped model uncertainty estimation approach is formulated where airship model is augmented with six extra state variables capturing the model uncertainty of the airship. The designed estimator estimates the airship model uncertainty along with its states. Nonlinear estimators, Extended Kalman Filter and Unscented Kalman Filter are designed for estimating airship attitude, linear velocities, angular velocities and model uncertainties. While Particle filter is designed for the estimation of airship attitude, linear velocities and angular velocities. Simulations have been performed using nonlinear 6-DOF simulation model of experimental airship for assessing the estimator performances. 1− uncertainty bound and error analysis have been performed for the validation.     WindBots: A Concept for Persistent In-Situ Science Explorers for Gas Giants

    This report summarizes the study of a mission concept to Jupiter with one or multiple Wind Robots able to operate in the Jovian atmosphere, above and below the clouds - down to 10 bar, for long durations and using energy obtained from local sources. This concept would be a step towards persistent exploration of gas giants by robots performing in-situ atmospheric science, powered by locally harvested energy. The Wind Robots, referred in this report as WindBots (WBs), would ride the planetary winds and transform aeolian energy into kinetic energy of flight, and electrical energy for on-board equipment. Small shape adjustments modify the aerodynamic characteristics of their surfaces, allowing for changes in direction and a high movement autonomy. Specifically, we sought solutions to increase survivability to strong/turbulent winds, and mobility and autonomy compared to passive balloons

    Touch the Wind: Simultaneous Airflow, Drag and Interaction Sensing on a Multirotor

    Disturbance estimation for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) is crucial for robustness and safety. In this paper, we use novel, bio-inspired airflow sensors to measure the airflow acting on a MAV, and we fuse this information in an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) to simultaneously estimate the three-dimensional wind vector, the drag force, and other interaction forces (e.g. due to collisions, interaction with a human) acting on the robot. To this end, we present and compare a fully model-based and a deep learning-based strategy. The model-based approach considers the MAV and airflow sensor dynamics and its interaction with the wind, while the deep learning-based strategy uses a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network to obtain an estimate of the relative airflow, which is then fused in the proposed filter. We validate our methods in hardware experiments, showing that we can accurately estimate relative airflow of up to 4 m/s, and we can differentiate drag and interaction force.Comment: The first two authors contributed equall

    Filtering based multi-sensor data fusion algorithm for a reliable unmanned surface vehicle navigation

    When considering the working conditions under which an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) operates, the navigational sensors, which already have inherent uncertainties, are subjected to environment influences that can affect the accuracy, security and reliability of USV navigation. To combat this, multi-sensor data fusion algorithms will be developed in this paper to deal with the raw sensor measurements from three kinds of commonly used sensors and calculate improved navigational data for USV operation in a practical environment. Unscented Kalman Filter, as an advanced filtering technology dedicated to dealing with non-linear systems, has been adopted as the underlying algorithm with the performance validated within various computer-based simulations where practical, dynamic navigational influences, such as ocean currents, provide force against the vessel’s structure, are to be considered
