    Hybrid Fault Diagnosis Method Based on Mechanical-Electrical Intersectional Characteristics for Generators

    In this chapter, a new hybrid fault diagnosis method based on the mechanical-electrical intersectional characteristics for turbo-generators is proposed. Different from other studies, this method not only employs the rotor vibration characteristics but also uses the stator vibration features and the circulating current properties inside the parallel branches of the same phase. Detailed theoretical analysis, as well as the experimental verification study, is carried out to demonstrate the proposed method. It is shown that in the proposed criterion for the method, the combining faulty characteristics for the single rotor eccentricity fault, the single rotor interturn short circuit fault, and the composite fault composed of the rotor eccentricity and the rotor interturn short circuit are all unique. The running conditions can be accurately and quickly identified by the proposed method. The work proposed in this chapter offers a new thought for the condition monitoring and the fault diagnosis of generators

    A High-Fidelity Computationally Efficient Transient Model of Interior Permanent-Magnet Machine With Stator Turn Fault

    An accurate transient model of interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machine with stator turn fault with due account of magnetic saturation is essential to develop robust and sensitive interturn fault detection algorithms and to evaluate drive controller performance and stability under fault conditions. This paper proposes a general method of modeling stator turn fault using flux linkage map of IPM machine under fault extracted from finite-element (FE) analysis. Simulation results from the proposed fault model are compared against FE and experimental results. The results show that the proposed model matches well with experimental data

    Processing and inferential methods to improve shaft-voltage-based condition monitoring of synchronous generators

    This thesis focuses on improving shaft-voltage-based condition monitoring of synchronous generators. The work presents theory for describing and modelling shaft voltages using fundamental electromagnetic principles. A modern framework is adopted in developing an online, automated and intelligent fault-diagnosis system. Novel processing and inferential methods are used by the system to provide accurate and reliable incipient-fault detection and diagnosis. The literature shows that shaft-voltage analysis is recognised as a technique with potential for use in condition monitoring. However, deficiencies in the fundamental theory and the inadequacy of methods for extracting useful information has limited its widespread application. This work extends the knowledge of shaft voltages, validates the merits of its use for fault diagnosis, and provides methods for practical application. Validation of the model is completed using an experimental synchronous generator, and results indicate that simulated shaft voltages compare well with the measurements - i.e. total average error of the model combined with experimental uncertainty is below 16%. The fault detection and diagnosis components are tested separately and together as a complete shaft-voltage-based conditionmonitoring system in an experimental setting. Results indicate that the system can accurately diagnose faults and it represents a unique and valuable contribution to shaft-voltage-based condition monitoring. Additionally, techniques such as optimal measurement selection, multivariate model monitoring, and fault inference developed for the investigations and system presented in this thesis, will assist engineers and researchers working in the field of condition monitoring of electrical rotating machines

All of them had their specificities, but the last ones, starting in 2011, were more connected to relevant events organized on the topic. In fact, these events have been clearly the only international forums fully dedicated to diagnostics techniques in power electrical engineering. For this particular issue, it has been decided to separate the different submissions into six parts: state of the art; general methods; induction machines (IMs); synchronous machines (SMs); . electrical drives; power components and power converters. The second section includes only one state-of-the-art paper, which is dedicated to actual techniques implemented in both industry and research laboratories. The third section includes three papers on diagnostic techniques not specifically aimed at a particular type of machine. The fourth section includes three papers devoted to diagnostics of rotor faults, two dedicated to stator insulation issues, and four papers dealing with mechanical faults diagnosis in IMs. The fifth section includes papers focusing on different types of SMs. The first two papers deal with wound-rotor SMs, the following three papers are dedicated to permanent-magnet radial flux machines, and the last one deals with permanent-magnet axial flux machines. Regarding the types of faults analyzed, there are three papers devoted to the diagnosis of interturn short circuits in the stator windings, i.e., one dedicated to the detection and location of field-winding-to-ground faults and a paper devoted to the diagnosis of static eccentricities. In the sixth section, two papers investigate issues related to faults in drive sensors, and one is devoted to fault detections in the coupling inductors.     Stator current identification in generator among single and composite faults composed by static air‐gap eccentricity and rotor inter‐turn short circuit

    In this study, a fault diagnosis model based on magnetic density is proposed to analyse the current characteristics of synchronous generator rotor inter‐turn short circuit and air gap eccentric single fault and composite fault. The model considers the influence of rotor inter‐turn short circuit and air gap eccentricity on air gap magnetic density. According to two main factors, the short circuit turns and eccentric distance, are used to reflect the short circuit and eccentricity of the generator. The detailed parameter input model of the generator can easily and quickly predict the development trend of these current parameters based on the air gap magnetic density. And the phase current is selected as the current parameter. The validity of the proposed model is verified by two‐dimensional finite element analysis and experimental research

    Modelling and detection of faults in axial-flux permanent magnet machines

    The development of various topologies and configurations of axial-flux permanent magnet machine has spurred its use for electromechanical energy conversion in several applications. As it becomes increasingly deployed, effective condition monitoring built on reliable and accurate fault detection techniques is needed to ensure its engineering integrity. Unlike induction machine which has been rigorously investigated for faults, axial-flux permanent magnet machine has not. Thus in this thesis, axial-flux permanent magnet machine is investigated under faulty conditions. Common faults associated with it namely; static eccentricity and interturn short circuit are modelled, and detection techniques are established. The modelling forms a basis for; developing a platform for precise fault replication on a developed experimental test-rig, predicting and analysing fault signatures using both finite element analysis and experimental analysis. In the detection, the motor current signature analysis, vibration analysis and electrical impedance spectroscopy are applied. Attention is paid to fault-feature extraction and fault discrimination. Using both frequency and time-frequency techniques, features are tracked in the line current under steady-state and transient conditions respectively. Results obtained provide rich information on the pattern of fault harmonics. Parametric spectral estimation is also explored as an alternative to the Fourier transform in the steady-state analysis of faulty conditions. It is found to be as effective as the Fourier transform and more amenable to short signal-measurement duration. Vibration analysis is applied in the detection of eccentricities; its efficacy in fault detection is hinged on proper determination of vibratory frequencies and quantification of corresponding tones. This is achieved using analytical formulations and signal processing techniques. Furthermore, the developed fault model is used to assess the influence of cogging torque minimization techniques and rotor topologies in axial-flux permanent magnet machine on current signal in the presence of static eccentricity. The double-sided topology is found to be tolerant to the presence of static eccentricity unlike the single-sided topology due to the opposing effect of the resulting asymmetrical properties of the airgap. The cogging torque minimization techniques do not impair on the established fault detection technique in the single-sided topology. By applying electrical broadband impedance spectroscopy, interturn faults are diagnosed; a high frequency winding model is developed to analyse the impedance-frequency response obtained

    Modelling and Detecting Faults of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors in Dynamic Operations

    Paper VI is excluded from the dissertation until the article will be published.Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have played a key role in commercial and industrial applications, i.e. electric vehicles and wind turbines. They are popular due to their high efficiency, control simplification and large torque-to-size ratio although they are expensive. A fault will eventually occur in an operating PMSM, either by improper maintenance or wear from thermal and mechanical stresses. The most frequent PMSM faults are bearing faults, short-circuit and eccentricity. PMSM may also suffer from demagnetisation, which is unique in permanent magnet machines. Condition monitoring or fault diagnosis schemes are necessary for detecting and identifying these faults early in their incipient state, e.g. partial demagnetisation and inter-turn short circuit. Successful fault classification will ensure safe operations, speed up the maintenance process and decrease unexpected downtime and cost. The research in recent years is drawn towards fault analysis under dynamic operating conditions, i.e. variable load and speed. Most of these techniques have focused on the use of voltage, current and torque, while magnetic flux density in the air-gap or the proximity of the motor has not yet been fully capitalised. This dissertation focuses on two main research topics in modelling and diagnosis of faulty PMSM in dynamic operations. The first problem is to decrease the computational burden of modelling and analysis techniques. The first contributions are new and faster methods for computing the permeance network model and quadratic time-frequency distributions. Reducing their computational burden makes them more attractive in analysis or fault diagnosis. The second contribution is to expand the model description of a simpler model. This can be achieved through a field reconstruction model with a magnet library and a description of both magnet defects and inter-turn short circuits. The second research topic is to simplify the installation and complexity of fault diagnosis schemes in PMSM. The aim is to reduce required sensors of fault diagnosis schemes, regardless of operation profiles. Conventional methods often rely on either steady-state or predefined operation profiles, e.g. start-up. A fault diagnosis scheme robust to any speed changes is desirable since a fault can be detected regardless of operations. The final contribution is the implementation of reinforcement learning in an active learning scheme to address the imbalance dataset problem. Samples from a faulty PMSM are often initially unavailable and expensive to acquire. Reinforcement learning with a weighted reward function might balance the dataset to enhance the trained fault classifier’s performance.publishedVersio
