The Project Scheduling Problem with Non-Deterministic Activities Duration: A Literature Review
Purpose: The goal of this article is to provide an extensive literature review of the models and solution procedures proposed by many researchers interested on the Project Scheduling Problem with nondeterministic activities duration. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an exhaustive literature review, identifying the existing models where the activities duration were taken as uncertain or random parameters. In order to get published articles since 1996, was employed the Scopus database. The articles were selected on the basis of reviews of abstracts, methodologies, and conclusions. The results were classified according to following characteristics: year of publication, mathematical representation of the activities duration, solution techniques applied, and type of problem solved. Findings: Genetic Algorithms (GA) was pointed out as the main solution technique employed by researchers, and the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) as the most studied type of problem. On the other hand, the application of new solution techniques, and the possibility of incorporating traditional methods into new PSP variants was presented as research trends. Originality/value: This literature review contents not only a descriptive analysis of the published articles but also a statistical information section in order to examine the state of the research activity carried out in relation to the Project Scheduling Problem with non-deterministic activities duration.Peer Reviewe
Exact and suboptimal reactive strategies for resource-constrained project scheduling with uncertain resource availabilities.
In order to cope with the uncertainty inherent in practical project management, proactive and/or reactive strategies can be used. Proactive strategies try to anticipate future disruptions by incorporating slack time or excess resource availability into the schedule, whereas reactive strategies react after a disruption happened and try to revert to a feasible schedule. Traditionally, reactive approaches have focused on obtaining a good schedule with respect to the original objective function or a schedule that deviates as little as possible from the baseline schedule. In this paper, we present various approaches, exact as well as heuristic, for optimizing the latter objective and thus encouraging schedule stability. Furthermore, in contrast to traditional rescheduling algorithms, we present a new heuristic that also takes future uncertainty into account when repairing the schedule. We consider a variant of the resource- constrained project scheduling problem in which the uncertainty is modeled by means of unexpected resource breakdowns. The results of an extensive computational experiment are given to compare the performance of the proposed strategies.Schedule stability; Stability; Algorithms; Heuristic; Uncertainty; Project scheduling; Scheduling; Performance; Strategy; Order; Project management; Management; Time;
Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization and Support Vector Machine for Business Optimization and Applications
Business optimization is becoming increasingly important because all business
activities aim to maximize the profit and performance of products and services,
under limited resources and appropriate constraints. Recent developments in
support vector machine and metaheuristics show many advantages of these
techniques. In particular, particle swarm optimization is now widely used in
solving tough optimization problems. In this paper, we use a combination of a
recently developed Accelerated PSO and a nonlinear support vector machine to
form a framework for solving business optimization problems. We first apply the
proposed APSO-SVM to production optimization, and then use it for income
prediction and project scheduling. We also carry out some parametric studies
and discuss the advantages of the proposed metaheuristic SVM.Comment: 12 page
A hybrid CFGTSA based approach for scheduling problem: a case study of an automobile industry
In the global competitive world swift, reliable and cost effective production subject to uncertain situations, through an appropriate management of the available resources, has turned out to be the necessity for surviving in the market. This inspired the development of the more efficient and robust methods to counteract the existing complexities prevailing in the market. The present paper proposes a hybrid CFGTSA algorithm inheriting the salient features of GA, TS, SA, and chaotic theory to solve the complex scheduling problems commonly faced by most of the manufacturing industries. The proposed CFGTSA algorithm has been tested on a scheduling problem of an automobile industry, and its efficacy has been shown by comparing the results with GA, SA, TS, GTS, and hybrid TSA algorithms
Parallel machine scheduling with precedence constraints and setup times
This paper presents different methods for solving parallel machine scheduling
problems with precedence constraints and setup times between the jobs. Limited
discrepancy search methods mixed with local search principles, dominance
conditions and specific lower bounds are proposed. The proposed methods are
evaluated on a set of randomly generated instances and compared with previous
results from the literature and those obtained with an efficient commercial
solver. We conclude that our propositions are quite competitive and our results
even outperform other approaches in most cases
Railway scheduling reduces the expected project makespan.
The Critical Chain Scheduling and Buffer Management (CC/BM) methodology, proposed by Goldratt (1997), introduced the concepts of feeding buffers, project buffers and resource buffers as well as the roadrunner mentality. This last concept, in which activities are started as soon as possible, was introduced in order to speed up projects by taking advantage of predecessors finishing early. Later on, the railway scheduling concept of never starting activities earlier than planned was introduced as a way to increase the stability of the project, typically at the cost of an increase in the expected project makespan. In this paper, we will indicate a realistic situation in which railway scheduling improves both the stability and the expected project makespan over roadrunner scheduling.Railway scheduling; Roadrunner scheduling; Feeding buffer; Priority list; Resource availability;

A survey of simulation techniques in commerce and defence
Despite the developments in Modelling and Simulation (M&S) tools and techniques over the past years, there has been a gap in the M&S research and practice in healthcare on developing a toolkit to assist the modellers and simulation practitioners with selecting an appropriate set of techniques. This study is a preliminary step towards this goal. This paper presents some results from a systematic literature survey on applications of M&S in the commerce and defence domains that could inspire some improvements in the healthcare. Interim results show that in the commercial sector Discrete-Event Simulation (DES) has been the most widely used technique with System Dynamics (SD) in second place. However in the defence sector, SD has gained relatively more attention. SD has been found quite useful for qualitative and soft factors analysis. From both the surveys it becomes clear that there is a growing trend towards using hybrid M&S approaches
Climbing depth-bounded adjacent discrepancy search for solving hybrid flow shop scheduling problems with multiprocessor tasks
This paper considers multiprocessor task scheduling in a multistage hybrid
flow-shop environment. The problem even in its simplest form is NP-hard in the
strong sense. The great deal of interest for this problem, besides its
theoretical complexity, is animated by needs of various manufacturing and
computing systems. We propose a new approach based on limited discrepancy
search to solve the problem. Our method is tested with reference to a proposed
lower bound as well as the best-known solutions in literature. Computational
results show that the developed approach is efficient in particular for
large-size problems
