    Get PDF
With the highly increasing availability of text data on the Internet, the process of selecting an appropriate set of features for text classification becomes more important, for not only reducing the dimensionality of the feature space, but also for improving the classification performance. This paper proposes a novel feature selection approach to improve the performance of text classifier based on an integration of Ant Colony Optimization algorithm (ACO) and Trace Oriented Feature Analysis (TOFA). ACO is metaheuristic search algorithm derived by the study of foraging behavior of real ants, specifically the pheromone communication to find the shortest path to the food source. TOFA is a unified optimization framework developed to integrate and unify several state-of-the-art dimension reduction algorithms through optimization framework. It has been shown in previous research that ACO is one of the promising approaches for optimization and feature selection problems. TOFA is capable of dealing with large scale text data and can be applied to several text analysis applications such as text classification, clustering and retrieval. For classification performance yet effective, the proposed approach makes use of TOFA and classifier performance as heuristic information of ACO. The results on Reuters and Brown public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2012 IEEE

This research paper aims to propose a hybrid of ant colony optimization (ACO) and k-nearest neighbour (KNN) algorithms as feature selections for selecting and choosing relevant features from customer review datasets. Information gain (IG), genetic algorithm (GA), and rough set attribute reduction (RSAR) were used as baseline algorithms in a performance comparison with the proposed algorithm. This paper will also discuss the significance test, which was used to evaluate the performance differences between the ACO-KNN, the IG-GA, and the IG-RSAR algorithms. The dependency relation algorithm was used to identify actual features commented by customers by linking the dependency relation between product feature and sentiment words in customers sentences. This study evaluated the performance of the ACOKNN algorithm using precision, recall, and F-score, which was validated using the parametric statistical significance tests. The evaluation process has statistically proven that this ACO-KNN algorithm has been significantly improved compared to the baseline algorithms. In addition, the experimental results have proven that the ACO-KNN can be used as a feature selection technique in sentiment analysis to obtain quality, optimal feature subset that can represent the actual data in customer review data

Optimisation according to the definition of Merriam-Webster Dictionary is an act, process, or methodology of making something (as a design, system, or decision) as fully perfect, functional, or effective as possible. In general, optimisation is the process of obtaining either the best minimum or maximum result under specific circumstance. The optimisation process engages with defining and examining objective or fitness function that suits some parameters and constraints. Nowadays, a vast range of business, management and engineering applications utilise the optimisation approach to save time, cost and resources while gaining better profit, output, performance and efficienc

Swarm intelligence algorithms, are among popular metaheuristic methods, developed and inspired by the collective behaviour of swarms that have attracted significant attention of researchers. The works related to swarm intelligence algorithms include the development of the algorithm itself, its modification and improvisation as well as its application in solving global optimisation problems. This thesis presents works on swarm intelligence algorithms that are inspired by real echolocation of a colony of bats and its performance evaluation to solve optimisation problems. The aim of the research is to introduce novel form of swarm intelligence algorithms based on real echolocation behaviour of bats. An adaptive bats sonar algorithm is proposed for solving single objective optimisation problems. A modified adaptive bats sonar algorithm is then proposed for solving constrained optimisation problems. Furthermore, a dual-particle swarm optimisation-modified adaptive bats sonar algorithm is proposed for solving multi objective optimisation problems. The algorithm is a hybrid algorithm that operates using dual level search strategy that takes merits of a particle swarm optimisation algorithm and a modified adaptive bats sonar algorithm. The superior performances of the developed bats echolocation-inspired algorithms are verified through rigorous tests with optimisation benchmark test functions and problems. Further, the performances of the developed algorithms are assessed in solving selected practical problems in business, mechanical/manufacturing engineering and electrical engineering fields. The results validate the better performance of the developed algorithms in single objective optimisation, constrained optimisation and multi objective optimisation problems of various fields

The evolution of the printed Bengali character from 1778 to 1978.

    Get PDF
The thesis traces the evolution of the printed image of the Bengali script from its inception in movable metal type to its current status in digital photocomposition. It is concerned with identifying the factors that influenced the shaping of the Bengali character by examining the most significant Bengali type designs in their historical context, and by analyzing the composing techniques employed during the past two centuries for printing the script. Introduction: The thesis is divided into three parts according to the different methods of type manufacture and composition; 1. The Development of Movable Metal Types for the Bengali Script Particular emphasis is placed on the early founts which lay the foundations of Bengali typography. Part 1 is subdivided into three sections, viz. Europeans in India, European Ventures, and Indigenous Ventures. 2. Mechanical Typefounding and Composition of Bengali In assessing the adaptation of the Bengali script for mechanical composition, attention is paid to those developments which precipitated the transition of printing in India from a craft to an industry. 3. Photocomposition of the Bengali Script The advantages of photocomposition are appraised in relation to new technical constraints imposed on type design. The description of the latest stage in the evolution of the printed Bengali character relates the practical implementation of this study's findings, viz. a new typesetting scheme and typeface design for the Bengali script. The Conclusion considers the new methodology adopted for the development of digital Bengali founts and its relevance to the production of all vernacular typeforms. The Epilogue discusses Bengali typewriter characters and low-resolution character shapes. It also considers the implications of new technology that places the design and production of founts in the hands of the non-professional designer. The thesis is intended to be of interest to the indologist, printing historian, type designer and type manufacturer. It comprises 11 chapters and includes 178 illustrations

Mongolic phonology and the Qinghai-Gansu languages

    Get PDF
The peripheral Mongolic languages of the Qinghai-Gansu area in China comprise Eastern Yugur (Shira Yugur) and the Shirongol languages. The latter can be subdivided in a Monguor branch, consisting of Mongghul and Mangghuer, and a Baoanic branch, consisting of Baoan, Kangjia, and Dongxiang (Santa). The internal taxonomy of the Qinghai-Gansu languages will be discussed in a separate section. The Qinghai-Gansu languages are increasingly well-described. They have also been the subject of studies in language contact, mostly in the context of the Amdo or Qinghai-Gansu Sprachbund. This study will approach the phonology of Qinghai-Gansu Mongolic from a comparative historical viewpoint. It provides an overview of the phonological developments of the Qinghai-Gansu languages, comparing them to the reconstructed ancestral language. At the same time it will investigate the archaic features that can be found in these languages, in order to improve the reconstructions of individual Mongolic lexemes. The book ends with a comparative supplement of about 1350 reconstructed Common Mongolic items, accompanied by the modern forms they are based on and, where necessary, arguments for the chosen reconstruction.LEI Universiteit LeidenLanguage Use in Past and Presen
