    Teleoperation Methods for High-Risk, High-Latency Environments

    In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing (ISAM) can enable larger-scale and longer-lived infrastructure projects in space, with interest ranging from commercial entities to the US government. Servicing, in particular, has the potential to vastly increase the usable lifetimes of satellites. However, the vast majority of spacecraft on low Earth orbit today were not designed to be serviced on-orbit. As such, several of the manipulations during servicing cannot easily be automated and instead require ground-based teleoperation. Ground-based teleoperation of on-orbit robots brings its own challenges of high latency communications, with telemetry delays of several seconds, and difficulties in visualizing the remote environment due to limited camera views. We explore teleoperation methods to alleviate these difficulties, increase task success, and reduce operator load. First, we investigate a model-based teleoperation interface intended to provide the benefits of direct teleoperation even in the presence of time delay. We evaluate the model-based teleoperation method using professional robot operators, then use feedback from that study to inform the design of a visual planning tool for this task, Interactive Planning and Supervised Execution (IPSE). We describe and evaluate the IPSE system and two interfaces, one 2D using a traditional mouse and keyboard and one 3D using an Intuitive Surgical da Vinci master console. We then describe and evaluate an alternative 3D interface using a Meta Quest head-mounted display. Finally, we describe an extension of IPSE to allow human-in-the-loop planning for a redundant robot. Overall, we find that IPSE improves task success rate and decreases operator workload compared to a conventional teleoperation interface

    Soft touchless sensors and touchless sensing for soft robots

    Soft robots are characterized by their mechanical compliance, making them well-suited for various bio-inspired applications. However, the challenge of preserving their flexibility during deployment has necessitated using soft sensors which can enhance their mobility, energy efficiency, and spatial adaptability. Through emulating the structure, strategies, and working principles of human senses, soft robots can detect stimuli without direct contact with soft touchless sensors and tactile stimuli. This has resulted in noteworthy progress within the field of soft robotics. Nevertheless, soft, touchless sensors offer the advantage of non-invasive sensing and gripping without the drawbacks linked to physical contact. Consequently, the popularity of soft touchless sensors has grown in recent years, as they facilitate intuitive and safe interactions with humans, other robots, and the surrounding environment. This review explores the emerging confluence of touchless sensing and soft robotics, outlining a roadmap for deployable soft robots to achieve human-level dexterity

    Measuring the Impact of China’s Digital Heritage: Developing Multidimensional Impact Indicators for Digital Museum Resources

    This research investigates how to best assess the impact of China’s digital heritage and focuses on digital museum resources. It is motivated by the need for tools to help governing bodies and heritage organisations assess the impact of digital heritage resources. The research sits at the intersection of Chinese cultural heritage, digital heritage, and impact assessment (IA) studies, which forms the theoretical framework of the thesis. Informed by the Balanced Value Impact (BVI) Model, this thesis addresses the following questions: 1. How do Western heritage discourses and Chinese culture shape ‘cultural heritage’ and the museum digital ecosystem in modern China? 2. Which indicators demonstrate the multidimensional impacts of digital museum resources in China? How should the BVI Model be adapted to fit the Chinese cultural landscape? 3. How do different stakeholders perceive these impact indicators? What are the implications for impact indicator development and application? This research applies a mixed-method approach, combining desk research, survey, and interview with both public audiences and museum professionals. The research findings identify 18 impact indicators, covering economic, social, innovation and operational dimensions. Notably, the perceived usefulness and importance of different impact indicators vary among and between public participants and museum professionals. The study finds the BVI Model helpful in guiding the indicator development process, particularly in laying a solid foundation to inform decision-making. The Strategic Perspectives and Value Lenses provide a structure to organise various indicators and keep them focused on the impact objectives. However, the findings also suggest that the Value Lenses are merely signifiers; their signified meanings change with cultural contexts and should be examined when the Model is applied in a different cultural setting. This research addresses the absence of digital resource IA in China’s heritage sector. It contributes to the field of IA for digital heritage within and beyond the Chinese context by challenging the current target-setting culture in performance evaluation. Moreover, the research ratifies the utility of the BVI Model while modifying it to fit China’s unique cultural setting. This thesis as a whole demonstrates the value of using multidimensional impact indicators for evidence-based decision-making and better museum practices in the digital domain

    A Survey on Few-Shot Class-Incremental Learning

    Large deep learning models are impressive, but they struggle when real-time data is not available. Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) poses a significant challenge for deep neural networks to learn new tasks from just a few labeled samples without forgetting the previously learned ones. This setup can easily leads to catastrophic forgetting and overfitting problems, severely affecting model performance. Studying FSCIL helps overcome deep learning model limitations on data volume and acquisition time, while improving practicality and adaptability of machine learning models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on FSCIL. Unlike previous surveys, we aim to synthesize few-shot learning and incremental learning, focusing on introducing FSCIL from two perspectives, while reviewing over 30 theoretical research studies and more than 20 applied research studies. From the theoretical perspective, we provide a novel categorization approach that divides the field into five subcategories, including traditional machine learning methods, meta learning-based methods, feature and feature space-based methods, replay-based methods, and dynamic network structure-based methods. We also evaluate the performance of recent theoretical research on benchmark datasets of FSCIL. From the application perspective, FSCIL has achieved impressive achievements in various fields of computer vision such as image classification, object detection, and image segmentation, as well as in natural language processing and graph. We summarize the important applications. Finally, we point out potential future research directions, including applications, problem setups, and theory development. Overall, this paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the latest advances in FSCIL from a methodological, performance, and application perspective

    IoT-Enabled Indoor Navigation: Data-Driven Insights for Seamless User Experience from the Indoor Navigation Test

    In order to improve the user experience in intricate interior settings, this research uses data-driven insights to investigate the dynamics of Internet of Things-enabled indoor navigation systems. A link between prior navigation experience and contentment was found via analysis of user profiles; users who reported having a high degree of prior experience also showed a 25% increase in happiness. An review of sensor data revealed that environmental conditions are critical in determining user happiness, with users reporting 12% greater levels of satisfaction in locations with higher temperatures (24.0°C). Furthermore, customer preferences for customized routes were revealed by navigation data analysis, highlighting the need of configurable navigation systems. Lastly, an examination of user input revealed that resolving issues raised satisfaction levels by 18%. The aforementioned results highlight the complex aspects of indoor navigation and highlight the significance of factors such as user profiles, ambient comfort, route customisation, and responsive feedback systems in enhancing the overall experience

    Breaking Virtual Barriers : Investigating Virtual Reality for Enhanced Educational Engagement

    Virtual reality (VR) is an innovative technology that has regained popularity in recent years. In the field of education, VR has been introduced as a tool to enhance learning experiences. This thesis presents an exploration of how VR is used from the context of educators and learners. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, including surveying and interviewing educators, and conducting empirical studies to examine engagement, usability, and user behaviour within VR. The results revealed educators are interested in using VR for a wide range of scenarios, including thought exercises, virtual field trips, and simulations. However, they face several barriers to incorporating VR into their practice, such as cost, lack of training, and technical challenges. A subsequent study found that virtual reality can no longer be assumed to be more engaging than desktop equivalents. This empirical study showed that engagement levels were similar in both VR and non-VR environments, suggesting that the novelty effect of VR may be less pronounced than previously assumed. A study against a VR mind mapping artifact, VERITAS, demonstrated that complex interactions are possible on low-cost VR devices, making VR accessible to educators and students. The analysis of user behaviour within this VR artifact showed that quantifiable strategies emerge, contributing to the understanding of how to design for collaborative VR experiences. This thesis provides insights into how the end-users in the education space perceive and use VR. The findings suggest that while educators are interested in using VR, they face barriers to adoption. The research highlights the need to design VR experiences, with understanding of existing pedagogy, that are engaging with careful thought applied to complex interactions, particularly for collaborative experiences. This research contributes to the understanding of the potential of VR in education and provides recommendations for educators and designers to enhance learning experiences using VR
