    Virtual Reality Games for Motor Rehabilitation

    This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

    Improvement of a Multi-Body Collision Computation Framework and Its Application to Robot (Self-)Collision Avoidance

    One of the fundamental demands on robotic systems is a safe interaction with their environment. In order to fulfill that condition, both collisions with obstacles and own structure have to be avoided. This problem has been addressed before at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) through the use of different algorithms. In this work, a novel solution that differentiates itself from previous implementations due to its geometry-independent, flexible thread structure and computationally robust nature is presented. In a first step, in order to achieve self-collision avoidance, collision detection must be handled. In this line, the Robotics and Mechatronics Center of the DLR developed its own version of the Voxmap-Pointshell (VPS) Algorithm. This penalty based collision computation algorithm uses two types of haptic data structures for each pair of potentially colliding objects in order to detect contact points and compute forces of interfering virtual objects; voxelmaps and pointshells. Prior to the work presented, a framework for multi-body collision detection already existed. However, it was not designed nor optimized to handle mechanisms. This thesis resents a framework that handles collision detection, force computation and physics processing of multi-body virtual realities in real-time integrating the DLR VPS Algorithm implementation. Due to the high number of available robots and mechanisms, a method that is both robust and generic enough to withstand the forthcoming developments would be desirable. In this work, an input configuration file detailing the mechanism’s structure is used, based on the Denavit-Hartenberg convention, so that any type of robotic system or virtual object can use this method without any loss of validity. Experiments to prove the validity of this work have been performed both on DLR’s HUG simulator and on DLR’s HUG haptic device, composed of two DLR-KUKA light weight robots (LWRs)

    Multi-robot cooperative platform : a task-oriented teleoperation paradigm

    This thesis proposes the study and development of a teleoperation system based on multi-robot cooperation under the task oriented teleoperation paradigm: Multi-Robot Cooperative Paradigm, MRCP. In standard teleoperation, the operator uses the master devices to control the remote slave robot arms. These arms reproduce the desired movements and perform the task. With the developed work, the operator can virtually manipulate an object. MRCP automatically generates the arms orders to perform the task. The operator does not have to solve situations arising from possible restrictions that the slave arms may have. The research carried out is therefore aimed at improving the accuracy teleoperation tasks in complex environments, particularly in the field of robot assisted minimally invasive surgery. This field requires patient safety and the workspace entails many restrictions to teleoperation. MRCP can be defined as a platform composed of several robots that cooperate automatically to perform a teleoperated task, creating a robotic system with increased capacity (workspace volume, accessibility, dexterity ...). The cooperation is based on transferring the task between robots when necessary to enable a smooth task execution. The MRCP control evaluates the suitability of each robot to continue with the ongoing task and the optimal time to execute a task transfer between the current selected robot and the best candidate to continue with the task. From the operator¿s point of view, MRCP provides an interface that enables the teleoperation though the task-oriented paradigm: operator orders are translated into task actions instead of robot orders. This thesis is structured as follows: The first part is dedicated to review the current solutions in the teleoperation of complex tasks and compare them with those proposed in this research. The second part of the thesis presents and reviews in depth the different evaluation criteria to determine the suitability of each robot to continue with the execution of a task, considering the configuration of the robots and emphasizing the criterion of dexterity and manipulability. The study reviews the different required control algorithms to enable the task oriented telemanipulation. This proposed teleoperation paradigm is transparent to the operator. Then, the Thesis presents and analyses several experimental results using MRCP in the field of minimally invasive surgery. These experiments study the effectiveness of MRCP in various tasks requiring the cooperation of two hands. A type task is used: a suture using minimally invasive surgery technique. The analysis is done in terms of execution time, economy of movement, quality and patient safety (potential damage produced by undesired interaction between the tools and the vital tissues of the patient). The final part of the thesis proposes the implementation of different virtual aids and restrictions (guided teleoperation based on haptic visual and audio feedback, protection of restricted workspace regions, etc.) using the task oriented teleoperation paradigm. A framework is defined for implementing and applying a basic set of virtual aids and constraints within the framework of a virtual simulator for laparoscopic abdominal surgery. The set of experiments have allowed to validate the developed work. The study revealed the influence of virtual aids in the learning process of laparoscopic techniques. It has also demonstrated the improvement of learning curves, which paves the way for its implementation as a methodology for training new surgeons.Aquesta tesi doctoral proposa l'estudi i desenvolupament d'un sistema de teleoperació basat en la cooperació multi-robot sota el paradigma de la teleoperació orientada a tasca: Multi-Robot Cooperative Paradigm, MRCP. En la teleoperació clàssica, l'operador utilitza els telecomandaments perquè els braços robots reprodueixin els seus moviments i es realitzi la tasca desitjada. Amb el treball realitzat, l'operador pot manipular virtualment un objecte i és mitjançant el MRCP que s'adjudica a cada braç les ordres necessàries per realitzar la tasca, sense que l'operador hagi de resoldre les situacions derivades de possibles restriccions que puguin tenir els braços executors. La recerca desenvolupada està doncs orientada a millorar la teleoperació en tasques de precisió en entorns complexos i, en particular, en el camp de la cirurgia mínimament invasiva assistida per robots. Aquest camp imposa condicions de seguretat del pacient i l'espai de treball comporta moltes restriccions a la teleoperació. MRCP es pot definir com a una plataforma formada per diversos robots que cooperen de forma automàtica per dur a terme una tasca teleoperada, generant un sistema robòtic amb capacitats augmentades (volums de treball, accessibilitat, destresa,...). La cooperació es basa en transferir la tasca entre robots a partir de determinar quin és aquell que és més adequat per continuar amb la seva execució i el moment òptim per realitzar la transferència de la tasca entre el robot actiu i el millor candidat a continuar-la. Des del punt de vista de l'operari, MRCP ofereix una interfície de teleoperació que permet la realització de la teleoperació mitjançant el paradigma d'ordres orientades a la tasca: les ordres es tradueixen en accions sobre la tasca en comptes d'estar dirigides als robots. Aquesta tesi està estructurada de la següent manera: Primerament es fa una revisió de l'estat actual de les diverses solucions desenvolupades actualment en el camp de la teleoperació de tasques complexes, comparant-les amb les proposades en aquest treball de recerca. En el segon bloc de la tesi es presenten i s'analitzen a fons els diversos criteris per determinar la capacitat de cada robot per continuar l'execució d'una tasca, segons la configuració del conjunt de robots i fent especial èmfasi en el criteri de destresa i manipulabilitat. Seguint aquest estudi, es presenten els diferents processos de control emprats per tal d'assolir la telemanipulació orientada a tasca de forma transparent a l'operari. Seguidament es presenten diversos resultats experimentals aplicant MRCP al camp de la cirurgia mínimament invasiva. En aquests experiments s'estudia l'eficàcia de MRCP en diverses tasques que requereixen de la cooperació de dues mans. S'ha escollit una tasca tipus: sutura amb tècnica de cirurgia mínimament invasiva. L'anàlisi es fa en termes de temps d'execució, economia de moviment, qualitat i seguretat del pacient (potencials danys causats per la interacció no desitjada entre les eines i els teixits vitals del pacient). Finalment s'ha estudiat l'ús de diferents ajudes i restriccions virtuals (guiat de la teleoperació via retorn hàptic, visual o auditiu, protecció de regions de l'espai de treball, etc) dins el paradigma de teleoperació orientada a tasca. S'ha definint un marc d'aplicació base i implementant un conjunt de restriccions virtuals dins el marc d'un simulador de cirurgia laparoscòpia abdominal. El conjunt d'experiments realitzats han permès validar el treball realitzat. Aquest estudi ha permès determinar la influencia de les ajudes virtuals en el procés d'aprenentatge de les tècniques laparoscòpiques. S'ha evidenciat una millora en les corbes d'aprenentatge i obre el camí a la seva implantació com a metodologia d'entrenament de nous cirurgians.Postprint (published version

    XR, music and neurodiversity: design and application of new mixed reality technologies that facilitate musical intervention for children with autism spectrum conditions

    This thesis, accompanied by the practice outputs,investigates sensory integration, social interaction and creativity through a newly developed VR-musical interface designed exclusively for children with a high-functioning autism spectrum condition (ASC).The results aim to contribute to the limited expanse of literature and research surrounding Virtual Reality (VR) musical interventions and Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) designed to support individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. The author has developed bespoke hardware, software and a new methodology to conduct field investigations. These outputs include a Virtual Immersive Musical Reality Intervention (ViMRI) protocol, a Supplemental Personalised, immersive Musical Experience(SPiME) programme, the Assisted Real-time Three-dimensional Immersive Musical Intervention System’ (ARTIMIS) and a bespoke (and fully configurable) ‘Creative immersive interactive Musical Software’ application (CiiMS). The outputs are each implemented within a series of institutional investigations of 18 autistic child participants. Four groups are evaluated using newly developed virtual assessment and scoring mechanisms devised exclusively from long-established rating scales. Key quantitative indicators from the datasets demonstrate consistent findings and significant improvements for individual preferences (likes), fear reduction efficacy, and social interaction. Six individual case studies present positive qualitative results demonstrating improved decision-making and sensorimotor processing. The preliminary research trials further indicate that using this virtual-reality music technology system and newly developed protocols produces notable improvements for participants with an ASC. More significantly, there is evidence that the supplemental technology facilitates a reduction in psychological anxiety and improvements in dexterity. The virtual music composition and improvisation system presented here require further extensive testing in different spheres for proof of concept

    Example Based Caricature Synthesis

    The likeness of a caricature to the original face image is an essential and often overlooked part of caricature production. In this paper we present an example based caricature synthesis technique, consisting of shape exaggeration, relationship exaggeration, and optimization for likeness. Rather than relying on a large training set of caricature face pairs, our shape exaggeration step is based on only one or a small number of examples of facial features. The relationship exaggeration step introduces two definitions which facilitate global facial feature synthesis. The first is the T-Shape rule, which describes the relative relationship between the facial elements in an intuitive manner. The second is the so called proportions, which characterizes the facial features in a proportion form. Finally we introduce a similarity metric as the likeness metric based on the Modified Hausdorff Distance (MHD) which allows us to optimize the configuration of facial elements, maximizing likeness while satisfying a number of constraints. The effectiveness of our algorithm is demonstrated with experimental results

    Adaptive Shared Autonomy between Human and Robot to Assist Mobile Robot Teleoperation

    Die Teleoperation vom mobilen Roboter wird in großem Umfang eingesetzt, wenn es für Mensch unpraktisch oder undurchführbar ist, anwesend zu sein, aber die Entscheidung von Mensch wird dennoch verlangt. Es ist für Mensch stressig und fehleranfällig wegen Zeitverzögerung und Abwesenheit des Situationsbewusstseins, ohne Unterstützung den Roboter zu steuern einerseits, andererseits kann der völlig autonome Roboter, trotz jüngsten Errungenschaften, noch keine Aufgabe basiert auf die aktuellen Modelle der Wahrnehmung und Steuerung unabhängig ausführen. Deswegen müssen beide der Mensch und der Roboter in der Regelschleife bleiben, um gleichzeitig Intelligenz zur Durchführung von Aufgaben beizutragen. Das bedeut, dass der Mensch die Autonomie mit dem Roboter während des Betriebes zusammenhaben sollte. Allerdings besteht die Herausforderung darin, die beiden Quellen der Intelligenz vom Mensch und dem Roboter am besten zu koordinieren, um eine sichere und effiziente Aufgabenausführung in der Fernbedienung zu gewährleisten. Daher wird in dieser Arbeit eine neuartige Strategie vorgeschlagen. Sie modelliert die Benutzerabsicht als eine kontextuelle Aufgabe, um eine Aktionsprimitive zu vervollständigen, und stellt dem Bediener eine angemessene Bewegungshilfe bei der Erkennung der Aufgabe zur Verfügung. Auf diese Weise bewältigt der Roboter intelligent mit den laufenden Aufgaben auf der Grundlage der kontextuellen Informationen, entlastet die Arbeitsbelastung des Bedieners und verbessert die Aufgabenleistung. Um diese Strategie umzusetzen und die Unsicherheiten bei der Erfassung und Verarbeitung von Umgebungsinformationen und Benutzereingaben (i.e. der Kontextinformationen) zu berücksichtigen, wird ein probabilistischer Rahmen von Shared Autonomy eingeführt, um die kontextuelle Aufgabe mit Unsicherheitsmessungen zu erkennen, die der Bediener mit dem Roboter durchführt, und dem Bediener die angemesse Unterstützung der Aufgabenausführung nach diesen Messungen anzubieten. Da die Weise, wie der Bediener eine Aufgabe ausführt, implizit ist, ist es nicht trivial, das Bewegungsmuster der Aufgabenausführung manuell zu modellieren, so dass eine Reihe von der datengesteuerten Ansätzen verwendet wird, um das Muster der verschiedenen Aufgabenausführungen von menschlichen Demonstrationen abzuleiten, sich an die Bedürfnisse des Bedieners in einer intuitiven Weise über lange Zeit anzupassen. Die Praxistauglichkeit und Skalierbarkeit der vorgeschlagenen Ansätze wird durch umfangreiche Experimente sowohl in der Simulation als auch auf dem realen Roboter demonstriert. Mit den vorgeschlagenen Ansätzen kann der Bediener aktiv und angemessen unterstützt werden, indem die Kognitionsfähigkeit und Autonomieflexibilität des Roboters zu erhöhen
