HEALTHCARE IN THE ERA OF DIGITAL TWINS: TOWARDS A DOMAIN-SPECIFIC TAXONOMY

The pursuit of physical and mental integrity is a fundamental instinct that has accompanied humankind since the dawn of time. Based on the digitalization modern medicine nowadays no longer has only access to self-collected information, but to information from almost all areas of the patients’ lives, which makes it possible to create a digital representation of them. This digital twin opens completely new and until now unthinkable possibilities, not only in the field of monitoring and prevention, moreover it is the key to personalized medicine. However, unlike other domains, the healthcare sector lacks a structured approach to exploit this paradigm. Against this background, based on a systematic literature review and the methodological approach of Nickerson et al. (2013), the paper presents the essential dimension as well as characteristics of digital twins healthcare applications as a taxonomy that has been evaluated against 100 healthcare application

From Digital Twins to Digital Selves and Beyond

This open access book aims at deepening the understanding of the relation between cyber-physical systems (CPSs) as socio-technical systems and their digital representations with intertwined artificial intelligence (AI). The authors describe why it is crucial for digital selves to be able to develop emotional behavior and why a humanity-inspired AI is necessary so that humans and humanoids can coexist. The introductory chapter describes major milestones in computer science which form the basis for the implementation of digital twins and digital selves. The subsequent Part I then lays the foundation to develop a socio-technical understanding of the nature of digital twins as representations and trans-human development objects. Following the conceptual understanding of digital twins and how they could be engineered according to cognitive and organizational structures, Part II forms the groundwork for understanding social behavior and its modeling. It discusses various perception-based socio-emotional approaches before sketching behavior-relevant models and their simulation capabilities. In particular, it is shown how emotions can substantially influence the collective behavior of artificial actors. Part III eventually presents a symbiosis showing under which preconditions digital selves might construct and produce digital twins as integrated design elements in trans-human ecosystems. The chapters in this part are dedicated to opportunities and modes of co-creating reflective socio-trans-human systems based on digital twin models, exploring mutual control and continuous development. The final epilog is congenitally speculative in its nature by presenting thoughts on future developments of artificial life in computational substrates. The book is written for researchers and professionals in areas like cyber-physical systems, robotics, social simulation or systems engineering, interested to take a speculative look into the future of digital twins and autonomous agents. It also touches upon philosophical aspects of digital twins, digital selves and humanoids

    Facebook’s Cyber–Cyber and Cyber–Physical Digital Twins

    Get PDF
A cyber-cyber digital twin is a simulation of a software system. By contrast, a cyber-physical digital twin is a simulation of a non-software (physical) system. Although cyber-physical digital twins have received a lot of recent attention, their cyber-cyber counterparts have been comparatively overlooked. In this paper we show how the unique properties of cyber-cyber digital twins open up exciting opportunities for research and development. Like all digital twins, the cyber-cyber digital twin is both informed by and informs the behaviour of the twin it simulates. It is therefore a software system that simulates another software system, making it conceptually truly a twin, blurring the distinction between the simulated and the simulator. Cyber-cyber digital twins can be twins of other cyber-cyber digital twins, leading to a hierarchy of twins. As we shall see, these apparently philosophical observations have practical ramifications for the design, implementation and deployment of digital twins at Facebook

ESCM: An Efficient and Secure Communication Mechanism for UAV Networks

UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) is gradually entering various human activities. It has also become an important part of satellite-air-ground-sea integrated network (SAGS) for 6G communication. In order to achieve high mobility, UAV has strict requirements on communication latency, and it cannot be illegally controlled as weapons of attack with malicious intentions. Therefore, an efficient and secure communication method specifically designed for UAV network is required. This paper proposes a communication mechanism named ESCM for the above requirements. For high efficiency of communication, ESCM designs a routing protocol based on artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC) for UAV network to accelerate communication between UAVs. Meanwhile, we plan to use blockchain to guarantee the communication security of UAV networks. However, blockchain has unstable links in high mobility network scenarios, resulting in low consensus efficiency and high communication overhead. Therefore, ESCM also introduces the concept of the digital twin, mapping the UAVs from the physical world into Cyberspace, transforming the UAV network into a static network. And this virtual UAV network is called CyberUAV. Then, in CyberUAV, we design a blockchain system and propose a consensus algorithm based on network coding, named proof of network coding (PoNC). PoNC not only ensures the security of ESCM, but also further improves the performance of ESCM through network coding. Simulation results show that ESCM has obvious advantages in communication efficiency and security. Moreover, encoding messages through PoNC consensus can increase the network throughput, and make mobile blockchain static through digital twin can improve the consensus success rate
