Age discrimination among basalt flows using digitally enhanced LANDSAT imagery
Digitally enhanced LANDSAT MSS data were used to discriminate among basalt flows of historical to Tertiary age, at a test site in Northwestern Saudi Arabia. Spectral signatures compared favorably with a field-defined classification that permits discrimination among five groups of basalt flows on the basis of geomorphic criteria. Characteristics that contributed to age definition include: surface texture, weathering, color, drainage evolution, and khabrah development. The inherent gradation in the evolution of geomorphic parameters, however, makes visual extrapolation between areas subjective. Therefore, incorporation of spectrally-derived volcanic units into the mapping process should produce more quantitatively consistent age groupings

Directed Acyclic Graph Continuous Max-Flow Image Segmentation for Unconstrained Label Orderings
Label ordering, the specification of subset–superset relationships for segmentation labels, has been of increasing interest in image segmentation as they allow for complex regions to be represented as a collection of simple parts. Recent advances in continuous max-flow segmentation have widely expanded the possible label orderings from binary background/foreground problems to extendable frameworks in which the label ordering can be specified. This article presents Directed Acyclic Graph Max-Flow image segmentation which is flexible enough to incorporate any label ordering without constraints. This framework uses augmented Lagrangian multipliers and primal–dual optimization to develop a highly parallelized solver implemented using GPGPU. This framework is validated on synthetic, natural, and medical images illustrating its general applicability

Body Phenomenology, Somaesthetics and Nietzschean Themes in Medieval Art
Richard Shusterman suggested that Maurice Merleau-Ponty neglected “‘lived somaesthetic reflection,’ that is, concrete but representational and reflective body consciousness.” While unsure about this assessment of Merleau-Ponty, lived somaesthetic reflection, or what the late Sam Mallin called “body phenomenology”—understood as a meditation on the body reflecting on both itself and the world—is my starting point. Another is John Dewey’s bodily theory of perception, augmented somewhat by Merleau-Ponty.
With these starting points, I spent roughly 20 hours with St. Benedict Restores Life to a Young Monk (c. 1360), a work of tempera and gold leaf on panel, by Giovanni Del Biondo, active in Italy from 1356 to 1398, on display in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s permanent collection. Following Dewey’s suggestion that “[t]he eye ... is only the channel through which a total response takes place,” meaning that motor, emotional, intellectual and non-visual perceptual capacities become active when we encounter paintings, I describe how the work engaged a range of bodily modalities; and how reflecting on these, in turn, supplied phenomenal articulations of life negating, preserving and enhancing forces important in the culture that produced it, and famously discussed by Friedrich Nietzsche. By virtue of the approach adopted, I also demonstrate Dewey’s belief that intimate engagement with art entails a total coordination of one’s capacities around the artwork, while simultaneously reinforcing Merleau-Ponty’s ideas about perception and how we can find phenomenal articulations of concepts such as the Nietzschean ones just mentioned. While focusing on Del Biondo’s painting, my main purpose is to engage in body phenomenology practices, and to show, in the words of Shusterman, how “[w]e might sharpen our appreciation of art through more attention to our somaesthetic feelings involved in perceiving art” and indeed the world
Pixelated Semantic Colorization
While many image colorization algorithms have recently shown the capability
of producing plausible color versions from gray-scale photographs, they still
suffer from limited semantic understanding. To address this shortcoming, we
propose to exploit pixelated object semantics to guide image colorization. The
rationale is that human beings perceive and distinguish colors based on the
semantic categories of objects. Starting from an autoregressive model, we
generate image color distributions, from which diverse colored results are
sampled. We propose two ways to incorporate object semantics into the
colorization model: through a pixelated semantic embedding and a pixelated
semantic generator. Specifically, the proposed convolutional neural network
includes two branches. One branch learns what the object is, while the other
branch learns the object colors. The network jointly optimizes a color
embedding loss, a semantic segmentation loss and a color generation loss, in an
end-to-end fashion. Experiments on PASCAL VOC2012 and COCO-stuff reveal that
our network, when trained with semantic segmentation labels, produces more
realistic and finer results compared to the colorization state-of-the-art
