Students' Understanding of Direct Current Resistive Electrical Circuits
Research has shown that both high school and university students' reasoning
patterns regarding direct current resistive electric circuits often differ from
the currently accepted explanations. At present, there are no standard
diagnostic examinations in electric circuits. Two versions of a diagnostic
instrument called Determining and Interpreting Resistive Electric circuits
Concepts Tests (DIRECT) were developed, each consisting of 29 questions. The
information provided by the exam provides classroom instructors a means with
which to evaluate the progress and conceptual difficulties of their students
and their instructional methods. It can be used to evaluate curricular packages
and/or other supplemental materials for their effectiveness in overcoming
students' conceptual difficulties. The analyses indicate that students,
especially females, tend to hold multiple misconceptions, even after
instruction. During interviews, the idea that the battery is a constant source
of current was used most often in answering the questions. Students tended to
focus on current in solving the problems and to confuse terms, often assigning
the properties of current to voltage and/or resistance. Results indicated that
students do not have a clear understanding of the underlying mechanisms of
electric circuit phenomena. On the other hand, students were able to translate
easily from a "realistic" representation of a circuit to the corresponding
schematic diagram.Comment: This article has been accepted for publication in the American

Using Experiential and Collaborative Learning to Promote Careers in Engineering
This paper discusses the design of the Girls Accelerating and Learning STEM (G.A.L.S.) one-week residential summer camp designed to encourage young girls to pursue engineering careers. Specifically, the camp exposed participants to the fields of computer science and engineering using experiential learning to develop participant interest and skills. At the end of the program, students participated in team competitions and presented their work. The end-of-program survey data showed that the G.A.L.S. camp had an impact on the enhancement of student interest in engineering as a potential career. The paper will provide details on the program components, and further discuss the impacts of the program and how it can be used as a model for future programs.Cockrell School of Engineerin
Improving the Power Electronics Laboratory teaching/learning process: an interactive web tool
European Higher Education Area; Power Electronics Laboratory; educational methods
Resumen: The forthcoming European Higher Education Area implies an important change in the teaching/learning process: it is necessary to get students more involved as well as to promote their independence and active participation. To achieve this objective, the new teaching methodologies aimed at more effective and appropriate learning for professional practice involve the use of audiovisual, computer and multimedia tools on the part of lecturers. Therefore, a web tool, based on a content management system, has been developed for the teaching in Power Electronics Laboratory. Moreover, the use of these multimedia tools makes possible to promote the students independence. Finally, the use of this web tool results in a very significant increase in the motivation students.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech

Robotics in the classroom: The effectiveness of robotics based curriculum in STEM education
Students learn best when they are engaged and are able to interact with their environment. They can build their own definition of concepts and themes, which are more meaningful because they are related to their own experiences and memories (Kolb, 1984). Simply put it all comes down to constructivism, which means a person builds knowledge and meaning from interactions between their experiences and ideas (the environment they work/play in and the people and objects they interact with). The purpose of this study is to find out how a middle school and high school constructivist robotics curriculum impacts students’ conceptual understanding of electrical circuit concepts
