Large-scale coordinated attacks : Impact on the cloud security

    Get PDF
International audienceCloud Computing has emerged as a model to process large volumetric data. Though Cloud Computing is very popular, cloud security could delay its adoption. Security of the cloud must provide data confidentiality and protection of resources. Such architecture seems to be vulnerable when confronted to distributed attacks also known as large-scale coordinated attacks. In this paper, we study the impact of large-scale coordinated attacks on Cloud Computing and its current security solutions. We experiment the open-source IDS Snort and a commercialized firewall using distributed portscan. Our results show that these security solutions are not designed to detect distributed attacks. Indeed, an attacker who controls about 32 hosts can easily achieve a distributed portscan without being detected

International expansion has become a way to ensure companies’ growth, particularly within the fashion industry. Its competitive nature and its importance in conveying status, style and personal expression allied to the convergence of international fashion trends explain this urge for companies to tap the international arena. Quebramar is a recognized lifestyle fashion brand that has forged a fruitful legacy in the Portuguese market for clothes with a nautical casual look. However, after a restructure of ownership embodied in a strategic alliance with Lanidor Group, Quebramar believes that the time for building a global brand has come. Despite being present in some foreign markets, its overseas’ operations have no expression. Quebramar intends to address this situation by tapping fast growing markets with an increasing purchasing power that can be seduced by an unknown foreign brand. The present case study provides an overview of Quebramar along with a brief summary of the Brazilian retail landscape with a special focus on the apparel retail industry. Therefore, this dissertation proposes to assess not only the inherent motivations behind Quebramar’s internationalization decision to expand to Brazil but also its viability. Consequently, to identify possible drawbacks, trends and opportunities, a strategic analysis of the Brazilian market was conducted. Moreover, the main purpose of this thesis is to define and identify the best positioning approach in the foreign country, with a special emphasis on the adaptation of certain elements of its marketing mix strategy.

This paper studies the viability of Renova’s internationalization to India. Its initial chapters include an analysis of the country, the Tissue & Hygiene industry and the company, as well as a section dedicated to the entry mode, in which an entry mode framework was created. Based on this tool, it was discovered that Renova should enter in India by direct export. Moreover, from the chapter on marketing strategy it was concluded that Renova should first export toilet paper, facial tissues, and napkins from its Red Label line, pursuing a premium positioning in the market. The products should be distributed first in Mumbai, through More’s retail chain and the wholesalers Metro and Walmart. Finally, despite India’s inherent risks and the industry’s challenges, a financial analysis suggests that this internationalization is viable (NPV = 215.565,66€) and worth to be followed

British high streets: from crisis to recovery? A comprehensive review of the evidence

In one of the most exhaustive evidence reviews into high streets, town centres and consumer habits ever conducted in Britain, researchers at the University of Southampton have highlighted that seismic shifts in consumer behaviour, combined with significant technological innovations, are having a deep and profound impact on the evolution of UK high streets.Funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and commissioned by the Government’s advisory group The Future High Streets Forum, this report comes at a time when radical shifts in consumer culture and practices are becoming increasingly apparent and widely discussed in public debate on what is changing UK town centres and high streets. This review offers an important resource for many groups with stakes in British town centres and high streets. It reflects the fact that reversing the decline of Britain’s high streets can only be achieved through research and informed discussion and by harnessing the goodwill and common purpose which has recently been displayed by the many stakeholders in the retail, hospitality, property and leisure sectors in working together to understand and address those challenges

Deriving retail centre locations and catchments from geo-tagged Twitter data

    Get PDF
This investigation offers an initial foray into the application of geo-tagged Twitter data for generating insights within two areas of retail geography: establishing retail centre locations and defining catchment areas. Retail related Tweets were identified and their spatial attributes examined with an adaptive kernel density estimation, revealing that retail related Twitter content can successfully locate areas of elevated retail activity, however, these are constrained by biases within the data. Methods must also account for the underlying geographic distribution of Tweets to detect these fluctuations. Additionally, geo-tagged Twitter data can be utilised to examine human mobility patterns in a retail centre context. The catchments constructed from the data highlight the importance of accessibility on flows between locations, which have implications for the likely commuting choices that may be involved in retail centre journey decision-making. These approaches demonstrate the potential applications for less conventional datasets, such as those derived from social media data, to previously under-researched areas

Anonymous Point Collection - Improved Models and Security Definitions

This work is a comprehensive, formal treatment of anonymous point collection. The proposed definition does not only provide a strong notion of security and privacy, but also covers features which are important for practical use. An efficient realization is presented and proven to fulfill the proposed definition. The resulting building block is the first one that allows for anonymous two-way transactions, has semi-offline capabilities, yields constant storage size, and is provably secure

Master's Project (M.Ed.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2015Using current research and literature, this project discusses the challenges that Chinese international students may have while they experience cultural adjustment in the United States. In addition, this project also examines strategies for Chinese international students to smooth the cultural transition during their stay in the United States. There is research about Chinese immigrants' cultural transition and international students' transitional periods. However, there is a very limited amount of research specifically on Chinese international students' cultural adjustment in the United States. Educating the Chinese international students, educators and counselors in international institutions about the challenges of cultural transition and the strategies to overcome the challenges may potentially help these students when they arrive in the United States. The application of this project is a presentation to international office personnel, counselors who work at university counseling centers and faculty members who have a large population of Chinese international students in their classrooms. The project also offers recommendations for any professionals who work to help Chinese international students to succeed in their study in a new educational system and a new culture
