    Developing A Framework For Professional Practice In Applied Performance Analysis

    Applied performance analysts are increasingly seen as sports science professionals; however, there is no accepted framework for professional practice. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a framework for professional practice in applied performance analysis (PA) which identifies the components of practice and the expertise underpinning it. A six-step framework analysis was conducted: (1) An initial conceptual framework was devised based on well-accepted components of applied practice; (2) A systematic review identified 90 papers relating to applied PA practice; (3) Papers were coded to the initial framework and additional themes recorded; (4) Themes were analysed and synthesised to construct a draft framework; (5) This draft was validated by surveying 24 experienced applied performance analysts and academic experts; (6) A revised framework is reported based on stakeholder engagement feedback. Nine components of practice were identified; establishing relationships and defining roles, needs analysis and service planning, system design, data collection and reliability checking, data management, analysis, reporting to key stakeholders, facilitation of feedback to athletes and service review and evaluation. Our evidence suggests that applied PA practice is underpinned by five areas of expertise: contextual awareness, building relationships, performance analysis and sporting expertise, technical expertise and professional behaviour

    Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If students’ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in student’s expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality

    Virtual, Digital and Hybrid Twins: A New Paradigm in Data-Based Engineering and Engineered Data

    Engineering is evolving in the same way than society is doing. Nowadays, data is acquiring a prominence never imagined. In the past, in the domain of materials, processes and structures, testing machines allowed extract data that served in turn to calibrate state-of-the-art models. Some calibration procedures were even integrated within these testing machines. Thus, once the model had been calibrated, computer simulation takes place. However, data can offer much more than a simple state-of-the-art model calibration, and not only from its simple statistical analysis, but from the modeling and simulation viewpoints. This gives rise to the the family of so-called twins: the virtual, the digital and the hybrid twins. Moreover, as discussed in the present paper, not only data serve to enrich physically-based models. These could allow us to perform a tremendous leap forward, by replacing big-data-based habits by the incipient smart-data paradigm

    Quantum protocols for few-qubit devices

    Quantum computers promise to dramatically speed up certain algorithms, but remain challenging to build in practice. This thesis focuses on near-term experiments, which feature a small number (say, 10-200) of qubits that lose the stored information after a short amount of time. We propose various theoretical protocols that can get the best out of such highly limited computers. For example, we construct logical operations, the building blocks of algorithms, by exploiting the native physical behavior of the machine. Moreover, we describe how quantum information can be sent between qubits that are only indirectly connected

    Applying modern psychometric techniques to melodic discrimination testing: Item response theory, computerised adaptive testing, and automatic item generation

    Modern psychometric theory provides many useful tools for ability testing, such as item response theory, computerised adaptive testing, and automatic item generation. However, these techniques have yet to be integrated into mainstream psychological practice. This is unfortunate, because modern psychometric techniques can bring many benefits, including sophisticated reliability measures, improved construct validity, avoidance of exposure effects, and improved efficiency. In the present research we therefore use these techniques to develop a new test of a well-studied psychological capacity: melodic discrimination, the ability to detect differences between melodies. We calibrate and validate this test in a series of studies. Studies 1 and 2 respectively calibrate and validate an initial test version, while Studies 3 and 4 calibrate and validate an updated test version incorporating additional easy items. The results support the new test’s viability, with evidence for strong reliability and construct validity. We discuss how these modern psychometric techniques may also be profitably applied to other areas of music psychology and psychological science in general
