    How Informal Control Modes affect Developers\u27 Trust in a Platform Vendor and Platform Stickiness

    Although IS literature is quite rich on analyzing control modes in inter-organizational relationships, there exists quite sparse empirical work on the effects of control modes on the relationship between a platform vendor and third-party developers in software-based platform ecosystems. Drawing on IS control literature and trust theory, we conducted an online survey with 125 game developers of the online gaming platform Steam, in which we examined the perception of clan and self-control mechanisms and how they influence developers\u27 trust in the platform vendor and their intention to stick with the platform. We demonstrate that clan control positively impacts both trust and stickiness, while self-control only affects the latter. Further, our results show that developers\u27 trust in the platform vendor serves as a mediator explaining the mechanisms of why clan control positively affects platform stickiness

    Governance of nonprofit platforms-Onboarding mechanisms for a refugee information platform

    The number of refugees arriving in Europe has increased dramatically in 2015. While governments, initiatives, and volunteers have invested substantial effort into supporting refugees, an information deficit impedes the efficacy of this collaboration. Information platforms are used to tackle this information deficit. However, the onboarding process of information providers is a critical challenge for the platforms?overall success. On the basis of observations, interviews with information providers and user experience tests, we drafted a case study describing the governance strategies applied to establish a sustainable onboarding of information providers on a nonprofit information platform for refugees. Contributing to recent literature on platform governance, our results show that governance mechanisms are implemented differently for nonprofit platform ecosystems than for commercial platform ecosystems. Building on our results, we provide practical implications by deriving a platform governance strategy that supports a sustainable onboarding of information providers

    Understanding Platform Loyalty in the Cloud: A Configurational View on ISVÂŽs Costs and Benefits

    Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) providers are increasingly engaged in nurturing vibrant ecosystems of independent software vendors (ISVs) by offering standardized services. However, cloud ecosystems have also been known for its fluctuation and high rates of desertion. A currently under-researched explanation for this low traction and high rates of fluctuation may lie in the fact that ISVs face considerable costs when joining and acting on a specific platform. If these costs are too high, they can rapidly outweigh the additional value generated by the ecosystem. This study therefore explains the role of different configurations of cost-inducing factors and resource benefits in influencing an ISV®s platform loyalty. By using a configurational approach based on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA), we display complex interactional effects of cost and benefits as causal conditions on ISVs’ intention to stay in the ecosystem and thus provide valuable insights for both practice as well as theory on platform ecosystems

    Toward sustainable lifestyles through collaborative consumption platforms: a case study of a community from Montevideo city.

    In a world in which market-oriented economies steer human endeavours on a global scale, the urgency for moving towards more sustainable futures has become more than evident. The role design plays as co-producer of everyday life, both in its physical and social construction, demands today designers to lead collective action through visions of sustainable lifestyles (Manzini, 2015; Irwin, 2015). Urban citizens, concerned with the unsustainability of dominant practices have been actively participating in such transitions, bringing changes into the lifestyles of their communities. Described as collaborative organizations, these bottom-up initiatives use social media and act as grassroots organizations (Manzini, 2015). Alternatively, these initiatives also fall under the umbrella notion of the collaborative or sharing economy. However, this notion is not representative of the diversity in those organizations as the phenomenon encompasses diverse endeavours wherein aims, motivations, organizational structures, and consequent societal and environmental impact vary widely from case to case. This research aims to learn, from an empirical viewpoint, how and why citizens interact and engage in these practices, through a case study of a citizen-led initiative from Montevideo, Uruguay. This platform and community propose a solution to the problem of accumulation of disused goods, configuring alternative practices of consuming, using, and disposing of goods. The case is analyzed with literature from collaborative economy studies; relevant concepts from Design for Social Innovation; and several theories brought together by Transition Design, used as a conceptual framework for sustainable lifestyles. The study suggests that on top of various motivations, engagement in community-oriented collaborative platforms can be explained by technological and cultural arrangements that foster a sense of belonging through giving active roles to participants in the community. Therefore, it is argued that these practices represent a step in transitions toward sustainable lifestyles as they engage citizens in self-organization and increase the possibilities of local and endogenous satisfaction of needs, at a global scale (in the sense of ‘cosmopolitan localism’). However, challenges for these platforms are building governance that prevents centralization of power and supporting its technological infrastructure without compromising their non-profit character with financial arrangements. Moreover, an important shortcoming is the reliance on centralized mass production and consumption, as these systems do not propose a distributed alternative to production but only to consumption practices. For that reason, environmental benefits cannot be claimed without further research
