On Legitimacy: Designer as minor scientist
User experience research has recently been characterized in two camps, model-based and design-based, with contrasting approaches to measurement and evaluation. This paper argues that the two positions can be constructed in terms of Deleuze & Guattariâs âroyal scienceâ and âminor scienceâ. A participatory approach for digital documentation of Egyptian Bedouins intangible cultural heritage
The Bedouins of Egypt hold a unique intangible cultural heritage (ICH),
with distinct cultural values and social practices that are rapidly changing as a consequence of having settled after having been nomadic for centuries. We present our attempt to develop a bottom-up approach to document Bedouin ICH. Grounded in participatory design practices, the project purpose was two-fold: engaging Egyptian Engineering undergraduates with culturally-distant technology users and introducing digital self-documentation of ICH to the Bedouin community. We report the design of a didactic model that deployed the students as research partners to co-design four prototypes of ICH documentation mobile applications with the community. The prototypes reflected an advanced understanding for the values to the Bedouins brought by
digital documentation practices. Drawing from our experience,
three recommendations were elicited for similar ICH projects. Namely,
focusing on the community benefits; promoting motivation ownership, and authenticity; and pursuing a shared identity between designers and community members. These guidelines hold a strong value as they have been tested against local challenges that could have been detrimental to the project
Validating cultural and contextual traits of a\ud collectivistic community
Sub-Saharan African communities are classified as collectivist\ud
societies. But, what exactly is meant by collectivism and to what extent\ud
individuals adhere to this given the differences in their socio-economic\ud
conditions? This paper is an empirical exploration of the contextual and cultural\ud
traits of a rural sub-Saharan African community in order to facilitate their\ud
interpretation towards technology design and adoption. Card sorting is used to\ud
validate and make explicit contextual and cultural traits previously identified\ud
during interviews. It is a confirmation of the collectivist nature of these cultures\ud
with more details such as eagerness to confirm personal views and requirements\ud
with that of the group in order to save âfaceâ, among other traits

Tensions of Data-Driven Reflection: A Case Study of Real-Time Emotional Biosensing
Biosensing displays, increasingly enrolled in emotional reflection, promise authoritative insight by presenting usersâ emotions as discrete categories. Rather than machines interpreting emotions, we sought to explore an alternative with emotional biosensing displays in which users formed their own interpretations and felt comfortable critiquing the display. So, we designed, implemented, and deployed, as a technology probe, an emotional biosensory display: Ripple is a shirt whose pattern changes color responding to the wearerâs skin conductance, which is associated with excitement. 17 participants wore Ripple over 2 days of daily life. While some participants appreciated the âphysical connectionâ Ripple provided between body and emotion, for others Ripple fostered insecurities about âhow muchâ feeling they had. Despite our design intentions, we found participants rarely questioned the displayâs relation to their feelings. Using biopolitics to speculate on Rippleâs surprising authority, we highlight ethical stakes of biosensory representations for sense of self and ways of feeling
Remembering today tomorrow: exploring the human-centred design of digital mementos
This paper describes two-part research exploring the context for and human-centred design of âdigital mementosâ, as an example of technology for reflection on personal experience(in this case, autobiographical memories). Field studies into familiesâ use of physical and digital objects for remembering provided a rich understanding of associated user needs and human values, and suggested properties for
âdigital mementosâ such as being ânot like workâ, discoverable and fun. In a subsequent design study, artefacts were devised to express these features and develop the understanding of needs and values further via discussion with groups of potential âusersâ. âCritical artefactsâ(the products of Critical Design)were used to enable participants to envisage broader possibilities for social practices and applications of technology in the context of personal remembering, and thus to engage in the design of novel devices and systems relevant to their lives.
Reflection was a common theme in the work, being what the digital mementos were designed to afford and the mechanism by which the design activity progressed. Ideas for digital mementos formed the output of this research and expressed the designerâs and researcherâs understanding of participantsâ practices and needs, and the human values that underlie them and, in doing so, suggest devices and systems that go beyond usability to support a broader conception of human activity
Creative Probes, Proxy Feelers, and Speculations on Interactive Skin
This paper critically discusses the combination of creative and social research methods to generate a novel approach to explore the multimodal technoscape. This paper draws on an interdisciplinary exploratory case study on interactive skinâan emergent technology that augments and/or interacts with the skin. This paper shows how concepts from skin studies and the HCI literature can be used to draw on creative methods to think about and with the body. We describe the use of an online probe pack, a speculative research workshop and sensory research interviews using âproxy feelersâ to agitate the design space of interactive skin futures. We show how combining these methods provoked and expanded the scope of interactive skin from the technological to the sensory and the social. We discuss the opportunities and challenges of the research dialogues that this approach facilitated, make the case for creative methodological improvisation and exploration of emergent technologies and show how creative and social research methods can be combined to explore the interconnection between technology, society and design
