    A la Carte Community: Identity and values in the open source software project TYPO3

    The exchange of open source software is a phenomenon that is becoming in- creasingly significant to IT users. This article presents the results of a study of the TYPO3 community, a community related to an open source CMS software. The article explores the community, identity and values of TYPO3 and shows that there are high levels of virtual as well as face-to-face interaction among the members. The participants feel that they belong to the community and many also feel that they are recognised as part of the community. However, the members do not share common values neither in relation to software pro- duction nor generally. Instead, they stress that you are free to choose your own values. Against this background, the authors introduce the notion of an ‘a la carte community’, i.e. a community where individuals pick and choose their degree of participation and integra- tion into the community and its values

    Architectural requirements for an open source component and artefact repository system within GENESIS

    When software is being created by distributed teams of software engineers, it is necessary to manage the work-flow, processes, and artefacts which are involved in the engineering process. The GENESIS project aims to address some of the technical issues involved by providing a software system to support distributed development. One of the parts of the system will be known as OSCAR, a repository for managing distributed artefacts. Artefacts can be process models, software components, design documents, or any other kind of entity associated with the software engineering process. OSCAR will be designed as a light-weight distributed system, managing the storage and access to a distributed repository of artefacts. This paper presents and discusses the requirements for OSCAR, and suggests a possible architecture for a software system which will meet those requirements. OSCAR will be a reliable and light-weight distributed system, managing both artefacts and meta-data corresponding to the artefacts. Users of OSCAR will be able to access the distributed repository through a local interface, using the searching and indexing capabilities of the system to locate and retrieve components. OSCAR must be able to store and retrieve both artefacts and meta-data efficiently. It must be possible for OSCAR to inter-operate with existing artefact management systems (such as CVS) and to collect metrics about the contents of and accesses to the repository. The next stage in the GENESIS project is to complete the requirements for the whole of the system (in addition to the OSCAR sub-system) and then to design the software. The software will initially be developed in a traditional closed-source fashion until the first release is finished. After the first release, the GENESIS software will become open source, and will be developed accordingly

    Understanding the Influencing Factors and Mechanism of Social Compensation for Chinese Older Adults Using Social Media in the Context of Smart Home: A Qualitative Analysis

    As a new generation of necessary terminals for future homes, smart homes have become one of the essential mediums for smart aging at home. This paper aims to explore how older adults who age at home can overcome the digital divide of the new medium and achieve social participation in the home context to realize active aging. Based on the theory of social compensation, we select the smart-home smart screen, a representative new medium product in China, and carry out open coding, spindle coding, selective coding, and theoretical construction of the original interview data through the grounded theory research method. The results show that the main factors affecting the social compensation of older adults to smart home social media include user interface quality, interaction quality, content quality, and service quality, and these four factors are used as external variables to compensate older adults socially, thereby stimulating the emotional experience and perception changes at the cognitive level of older adults and then affecting the adoption and acceptance of smart home social media by older adults. This study refines the factors influencing the older adults' use of smart home social media from the perspective of social compensation. It explains the mechanism of acceptable behavior of older adults, bridging the gap in previous literature on the influencing factors and behavioral mechanisms of older adults of smart home social media. This paper provides a theoretical basis and guidance for the subsequent academic research and software development practice of social media under new technological devices to further help older adults in China achieve active and healthy aging

    Production and use of documentation in scientific software development

    Software is becoming ubiquitous in science. The success of the application of scientific software depends on effective communication about what the software does and how it operates. Documentation captures the communication about the software. For that reason, practices around scientific software documentation need to be better understood. This thesis presents four qualitative empirical studies that look in depth at the production and use of documentation of scientific software. Together, the studies provide evidence emphasising the importance of documentation and shows the handshake between written documentation and the informal, ephemeral information exchange that happens within the community. Four reasons behind the obstacles to producing effective scientific software documentation are identified: 1) the insufficient resources; 2) lack of incentives for researchers; 3) the influence of the community of practice; 4) the necessity of keeping up with the regular advancements of science. Benefits of the process of producing documentation are also identified: 1) aiding reasoning; 2) supporting reproducibility of science; 3) in certain contexts, expanding the community of users and developers around the software. The latter is investigated through a case study of documentation ‘crowdsourcing’. The research reveals that there is a spectrum of users, with differing needs with respect to documentation. This, in turn, requires different approaches in addressing their needs. The research shows that the view of what constitutes documentation must be broad, in order to recognise how wide a range of resources (e.g., formal documents, email, online fora, comments in the source code) is actually used in communicating knowledge about scientific software. Much of the information about the software resides within the community of practice (and may not be documented). These observations are of practical use for those producing documentation in different contexts of scientific software development, for example providing guidance about engaging a community in ‘crowdsourcing’ documentation

    A STRUCTURAL MODEL OF IMPLEMENTATION

    A general model of the management science implementation process is presented based on the results of more than ten years of implementation research. A multiple-equation representation of that model is developed for one important class of implementation, the two-stage implementation, in which it is necessary to gain both user and management acceptance of the system being implemented.     User-Driven Innovation - Context and Cases in the Nordic Region

    The nature of innovation is changing. An increasingly globalized society, enabled by information and communication technologies (ICT), has changed the process of value creation and shifted the balance of power between firms and individual consumers – or users. Companies can no longer rely solely on operational efficiency or technological superiority in order to create a competitive advantage. Today, companies must also find ways to define and deliver unique experiences, together with users, in order to survive. However, this requires a paradigm shift – both a change in mindset and adjustments to current working practices. In this report, the process of defining unique experiences together with users is referred to as user-driven innovation. User-driven innovation encompasses both an understanding of true user needs and a systematic involvement of users in the innovation process. The report explains a number of market forces and academic underpinnings, and presents an overview of the context regarding user-driven innovation in each of the five Nordic countries. The report also presents concrete examples of how companies employ user-driven innovation processes. Finally, the report suggests a number of policy-level activities which could be undertaken to strengthen both the understanding and practical competencies related to user-driven innovation
