'HeART of Stroke (HoS)', a community-based Arts for Health group intervention to support self-confidence and psychological well-being following a stroke: protocol for a randomised controlled feasibility study
Introduction Over 152 000 people in the UK have strokes annually and a third experience residual disability. Low mood also affects a third of stroke survivors; yet psychological support is poor. While Arts for Health interventions have been shown to improve well-being in people with mild-to-moderate depression post-stroke, their role in helping people regain sense of self, well-being and confidence has yet to be evaluated. The main aim of this study is to explore the feasibility of conducting a pragmatic multicentre randomised controlled trial to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an Arts for Health group intervention (‘HeART of Stroke’ (HoS)) for stroke survivors. HoS is a 10-session artist-facilitated group intervention held in the community over 14 weeks. It offers a non-judgemental, supportive environment for people to explore sense of self, potentially enhancing well-being and confidence. Methods and analysis Sixty-four people, up to 2 years post-stroke, recruited via secondary care research staff or community stroke/rehabilitation teams in two UK centres will be randomised to either HoS plus usual care or usual care only. Self-reported outcomes, measured at baseline and approximately 5 months postrandomisation, will include stroke-related, well-being, mood, self-esteem, quality of life and process measures. Analyses will focus on estimating key feasibility parameters (eg, rates of recruitment, retention, intervention attendance). We will develop outcome and resource use data collection methods to inform an effectiveness and cost-effectiveness analysis in the future trial. Interviews, with a sample of participants, will explore the acceptability of the intervention and study processes, as well as experiences of the HoS group. Ethics and dissemination National Health Service (NHS), Research and Development and University ethical approvals have been obtained. Two peer-reviewed journal publications are planned plus one service user led publication. The research is focus on the concept of storytelling associated with product design, trying to investigate new ways of designing and a possible future scenario related to the concept of death. MY BOY BUILDS COFFINS is a gravestone made using a combination of cremation’s ashes and resin. It is composed by a series of holes in which the user can stitch a text, in order to remember the loved one. The stitching need of a particular yarn produced in Switzerland using some parts of human body. Project also provides another version which uses LED lights instead of the yarn. The LEDs - thanks to an inductive coupling - will light when It will be posed in the hole. The gravestone can be placed where you want, as if it would create a little altar staff at home. In this way, there is a real connection between the user and the dearly departed

Combining knowledge mapping and videoconferencing for open sensemaking communities
The Open Educational Resources (OER) movement has been growing rapidly, opening up new opportunities for widening participation (Willinsky, 2006). OpenLearn is an OER pilot project developed by the UK Open University (OU) [http://www.open.ac.uk/openlearn], and launched in October 2006, supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. OpenLearn has published 3371 hours in the LearningSPace and 5194 in the LabSpace of OERs designed specifically for distance learning (the OU’s core business), and covers a range of subjects from arts and history to science and nature. There are more than 300 units at all study levels from access to higher education, graduation and postgraduation.
Our current work is to investigate how these tools can be used to foster open sensemaking communities (Buckingham Shum, 2005) around the OERs, that is, the interpretative work that must take place around any resource for learning to take place. How can we support this critical activity in an OER context when learners must find and engage with peers themselves, if they do not wish to study alone?
This paper introduces the e-learning environment that has been developed after the first year of OpenLearn, focusing on the uses made of two sensemaking support tools, Compendium for knowledge mapping, and FlashMeeting for videoconferencing
Modeling the adoption and use of social media by nonprofit organizations
This study examines what drives organizational adoption and use of social
media through a model built around four key factors - strategy, capacity,
governance, and environment. Using Twitter, Facebook, and other data on 100
large US nonprofit organizations, the model is employed to examine the
determinants of three key facets of social media utilization: 1) adoption, 2)
frequency of use, and 3) dialogue. We find that organizational strategies,
capacities, governance features, and external pressures all play a part in
these social media adoption and utilization outcomes. Through its integrated,
multi-disciplinary theoretical perspective, this study thus helps foster
understanding of which types of organizations are able and willing to adopt and
juggle multiple social media accounts, to use those accounts to communicate
more frequently with their external publics, and to build relationships with
