Discrete breathers in dissipative lattices
We study the properties of discrete breathers, also known as intrinsic
localized modes, in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova lattice of
oscillators subject to damping and external force. The system is studied in the
whole range of values of the coupling parameter, from C=0 (uncoupled limit) up
to values close to the continuum limit (forced and damped sine-Gordon model).
As this parameter is varied, the existence of different bifurcations is
investigated numerically. Using Floquet spectral analysis, we give a complete
characterization of the most relevant bifurcations, and we find (spatial)
symmetry-breaking bifurcations which are linked to breather mobility, just as
it was found in Hamiltonian systems by other authors. In this way moving
breathers are shown to exist even at remarkably high levels of discreteness. We
study mobile breathers and characterize them in terms of the phonon radiation
they emit, which explains successfully the way in which they interact. For
instance, it is possible to form ``bound states'' of moving breathers, through
the interaction of their phonon tails. Over all, both stationary and moving
breathers are found to be generic localized states over large values of ,
and they are shown to be robust against low temperature fluctuations.Comment: To be published in Physical Review
Hopf bifurcation with non-semisimple 1:1 resonance
A generalised Hopf bifurcation, corresponding to non-semisimple double imaginary eigenvalues (case of 1:1 resonance), is analysed using a normal form approach. This bifurcation has linear codimension-3, and a centre subspace of dimension 4. The four-dimensional normal form is reduced to a three-dimensional system, which is normal to the group orbits of a phase-shift symmetry. There may exist 0, 1 or 2 small-amplitude periodic solutions. Invariant 2-tori of quasiperiodic solutions bifurcate from these periodic solutions. The authors locate one-dimensional varieties in the parameter space 1223 on which the system has four different codimension-2 singularities: a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation a 1322 symmetric cusp, a Hopf/Hopf mode interaction without strong resonance, and a steady-state/Hopf mode interaction with eigenvalues (0, i,-i)
Negative-coupling resonances in pump-coupled lasers
We consider coupled lasers, where the intensity deviations from the steady
state, modulate the pump of the other lasers. Most of our results are for two
lasers where the coupling constants are of opposite sign. This leads to a Hopf
bifurcation to periodic output for weak coupling. As the magnitude of the
coupling constants is increased (negatively) we observe novel amplitude effects
such as a weak coupling resonance peak and, strong coupling subharmonic
resonances and chaos. In the weak coupling regime the output is predicted by a
set of slow evolution amplitude equations. Pulsating solutions in the strong
coupling limit are described by discrete map derived from the original model.Comment: 29 pages with 8 figures Physica D, in pres
Quadratic Volume-Preserving Maps: Invariant Circles and Bifurcations
We study the dynamics of the five-parameter quadratic family of
volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of R^3. This family is the unfolded normal
form for a bifurcation of a fixed point with a triple-one multiplier and also
is the general form of a quadratic three-dimensional map with a quadratic
inverse. Much of the nontrivial dynamics of this map occurs when its two fixed
points are saddle-foci with intersecting two-dimensional stable and unstable
manifolds that bound a spherical ``vortex-bubble''. We show that this occurs
near a saddle-center-Neimark-Sacker (SCNS) bifurcation that also creates, at
least in its normal form, an elliptic invariant circle. We develop a simple
algorithm to accurately compute these elliptic invariant circles and their
longitudinal and transverse rotation numbers and use it to study their
bifurcations, classifying them by the resonances between the rotation numbers.
In particular, rational values of the longitudinal rotation number are shown to
give rise to a string of pearls that creates multiple copies of the original
spherical structure for an iterate of the map.Comment: 53 pages, 29 figure
Synchronization of many nano-mechanical resonators coupled via a common cavity field
Using amplitude equations, we show that groups of identical nano-mechanical
resonators, interacting with a common mode of a cavity microwave field,
synchronize to form a single mechanical mode which couples to the cavity with a
strength dependent on the square sum of the individual mechanical-microwave
couplings. Classically this system is dominated by periodic behaviour which,
when analyzed using amplitude equations, can be shown to exhibit
multi-stability. In contrast groups of sufficiently dissimilar nano-mechanical
oscillators may lose synchronization and oscillate out of phase at
significantly higher amplitudes. Further the method by which synchronization is
lost resembles that for large amplitude forcing which is not of the Kuramoto
form.Comment: 23 pages, 11 figure
