A Comprehensive Survey on Moving Networks
The unprecedented increase in the demand for mobile data, fuelled by new
emerging applications such as HD video streaming and heightened online
activities has caused massive strain on the existing cellular networks. As a
solution, the 5G technology has been introduced to improve network performance
through various innovative features such as mmWave spectrum and HetNets. In
essence, HetNets include several small cells underlaid within macro-cell to
serve densely populated regions. Recently, a mobile layer of HetNet has been
under consideration by the researchers and is often referred to as moving
networks. Moving networks comprise of mobile cells that are primarily
introduced to improve QoS for commuting users inside public transport because
the QoS is deteriorated due to vehicular penetration losses. Furthermore, the
users inside fast moving public transport also exert excessive load on the core
network due to large group handovers. To this end, mobile cells will play a
crucial role in reducing overall handover count and will help in alleviating
these problems by decoupling in-vehicle users from the core network.
To date, remarkable research results have been achieved by the research
community in addressing challenges linked to moving networks. However, to the
best of our knowledge, a discussion on moving networks in a holistic way is
missing in the current literature. To fill the gap, in this paper, we
comprehensively survey moving networks. We cover the technological aspects and
their applications in the futuristic applications. We also discuss the
use-cases and value additions that moving networks may bring to future cellular
architecture and identify the challenges associated with them. Based on the
identified challenges we discuss the future research directions.Comment: This survey has been submitted to IEEE Communications Surveys &

Survey on 6G Frontiers: Trends, Applications, Requirements, Technologies and Future Research
Emerging applications such as Internet of Everything, Holographic Telepresence, collaborative robots, and space and deep-sea tourism are already highlighting the limitations of existing fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. These limitations are in terms of data-rate, latency, reliability, availability, processing, connection density and global coverage, spanning over ground, underwater and space. The sixth-generation (6G) of mobile networks are expected to burgeon in the coming decade to address these limitations. The development of 6G vision, applications, technologies and standards has already become a popular research theme in academia and the industry. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the current developments towards 6G. We highlight the societal and technological trends that initiate the drive towards 6G. Emerging applications to realize the demands raised by 6G driving trends are discussed subsequently. We also elaborate the requirements that are necessary to realize the 6G applications. Then we present the key enabling technologies in detail. We also outline current research projects and activities including standardization efforts towards the development of 6G. Finally, we summarize lessons learned from state-of-the-art research and discuss technical challenges that would shed a new light on future research directions towards 6G
Unlocking the Potential of 5G and Beyond Networks to Support Massive Access of Ground and Air Devices
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from IEEE via the DOI in this recordFlying devices, e.g., Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and High Altitude Platforms (HAP) are showing great potentials to revolutionise human society with unprecedented efficiency and convenience. 5G and beyond (5GB) networks have been considered as an important infrastructure for supporting flying devices to accomplish mission-critical applications. However, most of the existing research on 5GB networks mainly focuses on technology evolution to support ground devices, paying insufficient attention to the emerging large-scale deployment of flying devices. To fill the gap, this study aims to identify the differences when 5GB networks are used to provide massive access services for the ground devices and their counterpart flying in the air and analyse in which aspects that 5GB should be enhanced to serve flying devices. In detail, a holistic 5GB architecture is presented to support both ground and flying devices. Then, the unique features of flying devices are analysed with a focus on the challenges they bring to 5GB systems. Facing these challenges, we thoroughly investigate the advantages and disadvantages of 5GB key technologies. Furthermore, a case study is presented to demonstrate that flying devices not only create new issues for 5GB design, but also bring new opportunities for 5GB to enhance their service capabilities.European Union Horizon 2020National Natural Science Foundation of Chin
Research challenges on energy-efficient networking design
The networking research community has started looking into key questions on energy efficiency of communication networks. The European Commission activated under the FP7 the TREND Network of Excellence with the goal of establishing the integration of the EU research community in green networking with a long perspective to consolidate the European leadership in the field. TREND integrates the activities of major European players in networking, including manufacturers, operators, research centers, to quantitatively assess the energy demand of current and future telecom infrastructures, and to design energy-efficient, scalable and sustainable future networks. This paper describes the main results of the TREND research community and concludes with a roadmap describing the next steps for standardization, regulation agencies and research in both academia and industry. The research leading to these results has received funding from the EU 7th Framework Programme (FP7/2007–2013) under Grant Agreement No. 257740 (NoE TREND)
On the Road to 6G: Visions, Requirements, Key Technologies and Testbeds
Fifth generation (5G) mobile communication systems have entered the stage of commercial development, providing users with new services and improved user experiences as well as offering a host of novel opportunities to various industries. However, 5G still faces many challenges. To address these challenges, international industrial, academic, and standards organizations have commenced research on sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. A series of white papers and survey papers have been published, which aim to define 6G in terms of requirements, application scenarios, key technologies, etc. Although ITU-R has been working on the 6G vision and it is expected to reach a consensus on what 6G will be by mid-2023, the related global discussions are still wide open and the existing literature has identified numerous open issues. This paper first provides a comprehensive portrayal of the 6G vision, technical requirements, and application scenarios, covering the current common understanding of 6G. Then, a critical appraisal of the 6G network architecture and key technologies is presented. Furthermore, existing testbeds and advanced 6G verification platforms are detailed for the first time. In addition, future research directions and open challenges are identified for stimulating the on-going global debate. Finally, lessons learned to date concerning 6G networks are discussed
Key Success Factors for 5G Technology Commercialization in Telecommunication Company Case Study of an Established XYZ Company in Indonesia
Abstract. Technology commercialization is the long process to bring technology from the research domain into the commercialization area to end-users with monetizing purposes. This study analyzes critical success factors for 5G technology commercialization in an established company in Indonesia. By defining the most significant factors, a company can strategize the most effective investments to important factors only and avoid other less meaningful areas. 5G is approaching fast, and some of the major early adopters Mobile Network Operators (MNO) have already deployed 5G within this year. However, some other MNOs or telecom companies, in general, remain skeptical, considering the wide range of new business cases, the readiness of industries, and twice significant capital investment compare to predecessor technology 4G. This study is based on interpretivism philosophy and uses Qualitative semi-structured in-depth interviews, observation, and deductive scenario planning as the methodology. Use cases, innovation ecosystem, and technology complementary are found to be the key success factors for 5G commercialization in an established company. The novelty of this study is to identify the key success factors for technology commercialization specific for the 5G technology context in Indonesia. Three axes deductive scenario planning using critical success factors as the uncertainties are considered as the originality of this study. Keywords: Key success factors, technology commercialization, established company, 5
Future Trends and Challenges for Mobile and Convergent Networks
Some traffic characteristics like real-time, location-based, and
community-inspired, as well as the exponential increase on the data traffic in
mobile networks, are challenging the academia and standardization communities
to manage these networks in completely novel and intelligent ways, otherwise,
current network infrastructures can not offer a connection service with an
acceptable quality for both emergent traffic demand and application requisites.
In this way, a very relevant research problem that needs to be addressed is how
a heterogeneous wireless access infrastructure should be controlled to offer a
network access with a proper level of quality for diverse flows ending at
multi-mode devices in mobile scenarios. The current chapter reviews recent
research and standardization work developed under the most used wireless access
technologies and mobile access proposals. It comprehensively outlines the
impact on the deployment of those technologies in future networking
environments, not only on the network performance but also in how the most
important requirements of several relevant players, such as, content providers,
network operators, and users/terminals can be addressed. Finally, the chapter
concludes referring the most notable aspects in how the environment of future
networks are expected to evolve like technology convergence, service
convergence, terminal convergence, market convergence, environmental awareness,
energy-efficiency, self-organized and intelligent infrastructure, as well as
the most important functional requisites to be addressed through that
infrastructure such as flow mobility, data offloading, load balancing and
vertical multihoming.Comment: In book 4G & Beyond: The Convergence of Networks, Devices and
