    A grammar of Rapa Nui

    Get PDF
This book is a comprehensive description of the grammar of Rapa Nui, the Polynesian language spoken on Easter Island. After an introductory chapter, the grammar deals with phonology, word classes, the noun phrase, possession, the verb phrase, verbal and nonverbal clauses, mood and negation, and clause combinations. The phonology of Rapa Nui reveals certain issues of typological interest, such as the existence of strict conditions on the phonological shape of words, word-final devoicing, and reduplication patterns motivated by metrical constraints. For Polynesian languages, the distinction between nouns and verbs in the lexicon has often been denied; in this grammar it is argued that this distinction is needed for Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui has sometimes been characterised as an ergative language; this grammar shows that it is unambiguously accusative. Subject and object marking depend on an interplay of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic factors. Other distinctive features of the language include the existence of a ‘neutral’ aspect marker, a serial verb construction, the emergence of copula verbs, a possessive-relative construction, and a tendency to maximise the use of the nominal domain. Rapa Nui’s relationship to the other Polynesian languages is a recurring theme in this grammar; the relationship to Tahitian (which has profoundly influenced Rapa Nui) especially deserves attention. The grammar is supplemented with a number of interlinear texts, two maps and a subject index

Networking vendor strategy and competition and their impact on enterprise network design and implementation

Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; and, (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2006.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 93-99).While a significant amount of literature exists that discuss platform strategies used by general IT vendors, less of it has to do with corporate networking technology vendors specifically. However, many of the same strategic principles that are used to analyze general IT vendors can also be used to analyze networking vendors. This paper extends the platform model that was developed by Michael Cusumano and Annabel Gawer to networking vendors, outlining the unique strategic aspects that the networking market possesses. The paper then reviews the strategy of the first dominant corporate datacom vendor, IBM, how it achieved its dominance, and how it lost it. The paper then discusses the strategies of various vendors who attempted to replace IBM as the dominant networking platform vendor and how they failed to do so. Finally, the paper discusses Cisco Systems, a vendor who did manage to achieve a level of dominance that parallels IBM's, and how that company has utilized its strategy to achieve and maintain its current dominance. Finally, Cisco's current strategic challenges are discussed. The impact of the strategies of the various vendors on the evolution of corporate networking is also discussed.by Ray Fung.S.M.M.B.A

A unified programming system for a multi-paradigm parallel architecture

Real time image understanding and image generation require very large amounts of computing power. A possible way to meet these requirements is to make use of the power available from parallel computing systems. However parallel machines exhibit performance which is highly dependent on the algorithms being executed. Both image understanding and image generation involve the use of a wide variety of algorithms. A parallel machine suited to some of these algorithms may be unsuited to others. This thesis describes a novel heterogeneous parallel architecture optimised for image based applications. It achieves its performance by combining two different forms of parallel architecture, namely fine grain SIMD and course grain MIMD, into a single architecture. In this way it is possible to match the most appropriate computing resource to each algorithm in a given application. As important as the architecture itself is a method for programming it. This thesis describes a novel multi-paradigm programming language based on C++, which allows programs which make use of both control and data parallelism to be expressed in a single coherent framework, based on object oriented programming. To demonstrate the utility of both the architecture and the programming system, two applications, one from the field of image understanding the other image generation are examined. These applications combine some novel algorithms with other novel implementation approaches to provide the most effective mapping onto this architecture
