Comparative media history, an introduction: 1789 to the present

This book aims to give a greater insight into the modern history of the media by considering influences on developments within a framework that uses a comparative approach to weigh up continuity versu change. This is a study of a selected number of countries and media industries, not cultural or social theory applied to history. As such, the aim is to encourage a broader understanding of cause and effect using the comparative method. Rather than providing a continuous narrative of media development in each country and industry, the study looks at the basic concepts behind the origins of various trends that reveal aspects both of previous developments and of new ones that start to emerge. To this extent it is influenced by the history of political thought, political economy, and economic and social history, as well as communication studies and some media theory. While it is difficult to do justice to all of these disciplines, the reader can borrow from them in order to gain greater insights into the thinking behind major developments, an appreciation of the issues of the past, and the extent to which they remain with us today

The technology of Incremental Sheet Forming - a brief review of the history

This paper describes the history of Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) focusing on technological developments. These developments are in general protected by patents, so the paper can also be regarded as an overview of ISF patents in addition to a description of the early history. That history starts with the early work by Mason in 1978 and continues up to the present day. An extensive list of patents including Japanese patents is provided.\ud \ud The overall conclusion is that ISF has received the attention of the world, in particular of the automotive industry, and that most proposed or suspected applications focus on the flexibility offered by the process. Only one patent has been found that is explicitly related to the enhancement of formability. Furthermore, most patents refer to TPIF (Two-Point Incremental Forming) as a process.\ud \ud Besides simply presenting a historical overview the paper can act as an inspiration for the researcher, and present a rough idea of the patentability of new developments

It is true that since the 1960s and the beginnings of the democratization of history, less powerful minorities have taken up the pen and more profusely expressed their views of history, but to a great extent, white males have engrained their view of history into people’s minds. Hawaii's Marine Fisheries: Some History, Long-term Trends, and Recent Developments

This paper provides an overview of Hawaii's marine fisheries from 1948 to the present. After three decades of decline following a brief period of growth at the conclusion to World War lI, Hawaii's commercial fisheries began a decade of sustained development in the 1980's. At the same time, fisheries management issues became more significant as different segments of the fishery came into more direct competition. This paper provides new estimates of commercial landings for the 1977-90 period, and summarizes limited information on recreational and subsistence fisheries in the 1980's. It also provides some historical context which may be useful in evaluating fishery development and management options

The history of transaction cost economics and its recent developments

The emergence of transaction cost economics (TCE) in the early 1970s with Oliver Williamson’s successful reconciliation of the so called neoclassical approach with Herbert Simon’s organizational theory can be considered an important part of the first cognitive turn in economics. The development of TCE until the late 1980s was particularly marked by treating the firm as an avoider of negative frictions, i.e., of transaction costs. However, since the 1990s TCE has been enriched by various approaches stressing the role of the firm in creating positive value, e.g., the literature on modularity.
