Modeling the effect of ink spread and ink penetration on tone reproduction

In ink jet printing when ink is printed on top of the paper, two effects occur that have an effect on the dot that is printed. One effect is that the ink spreads out laterally and the other is that the ink penetrates into the paper. A tone reproduction model was developed that mathematically modeled the effects ink spread and ink penetration have on tone reproduction. Since the optical behavior of ink penetration is very complex, the model only included characteristics that were expected to be significant. This model was built from the foundation of another tone reproduction model which mathematically modeled the optical effect of halftone patterns as a probability. The model was tested using test samples consisting of gray scales produced by thermal ink jet. These samples were produced by varying certain conditions that are thought to affect ink penetration and ink spread and simulate other ink jet environments such as different inks, different papers, and different printers. Microdensitometry equipment was used to obtain data from the samples and the model was analyzed on how well it fit the data

Modeling the halftone image to determine the area fraction of ink

Finding the area fraction of ink in a halftone image is an important part of judging the quality of the image produced and the quality of the system that produced it. In order to improve histogram analysis from mere visual judgment, algorithms were constructed to come up with a function that would computationally model a graphical representation of a histogram that could match the histogram of a real halftone pattern. The variables within the model, in turn, gives the desired area fraction of ink value. Two different algorithms were developed. In one, the histogram is treated as two Gaussian functions and the model is the summation of fractions of the two functions. The other uses the equivalent straight edge of the halftone pattern. The model here is the derivative of the function of the edge convolved with a Gaussian noise metric. By finding the minimum root mean square deviation and least variances of the difference between the model and actual data across the gray levels of reflectances, a good estimate of the area fraction of ink F and other quality metrics of the histogram of a halftone pattern could be made

Algorithm for MTF estimation by histogram modeling of an edge

    Get PDF
The Modulation Transfer Function, or MTF, is a property of an imaging system that describes the effect that the system has on the sharpness of an object. It is an important image quality metric that has applications in almost every major Imaging Science application. The traditional method of determining the MTF, however, relies on aligning an edge perpendicular to the scan line that will be used to take the measurement. This may not always be a convenient orientation for your experiments. It is hypothesized that there is a relationship between the histogram of the scan line (regardless of its position) and the MTF of the system. This research project will explore this relationship and determine if it will be a useful alternative to the traditional method of calculation

Abstract : Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of implant geometry in peri-implant bone loss. Materials and methods: From April to November 2013, there were examined 183 patients treated with osseointegrated implants (Implacil De Bortoli, Sao Paulo, Brazil) performed at FUNDECTO (University of Sao Paulo - USP) from 1998 to 2012, rehabilitated with 916 implants in function for 1 year at least. The variable marginal bone loss was assessed according to the factor type of implant (cylindrical or conical shape and internal or external hexagonal connection). Results: The t test for means of independent samples with unknown variance showed significant greater bone loss for cylindrical implants when considering the top of the implant as coronal reference point to measure bone loss the. But, when the base of smooth neck was used as a coronal reference point for measuring the conical implants have significantly higher bone loss. Conclusions: All studied implant groups had low peri-implant bone loss values. The implant geometry and the smooth neck length significantly influence peri-implant bone loss. Tapered implants with shorter smooth neck length and cervical micro threads had lower marginal bone loss

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different tooth storage media for in vitro studies on the chemical composition of dentin. Sixty healthy third molars were selected and divided into 7 groups according to the type of storage (n = 10). Control group: samples prepared and analyzed in less than 24 hours of dental extraction, and were not stored in any medium; Group DI: samples stored in distilled water; Group DE: samples stored in deionized water; Group U: samples stored in ultrapure water; Group S: samples stored in physiological saline; Group AS: samples stored in artificial saliva; Group F: samples frozen at -20º C. The teeth were cut and after 30 days of storage the samples were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), using the following ratios: phosphate / amide I; carbonate / phosphate; and amide I / amide III. Then, the same samples were submitted to atomic composition analysis using X-ray Dispersive Energy Spectroscopy (EDX), which measured the levels of C, Na, Mg, P, Ca and the Ca / P ratio. Data were evaluated using the Analysis of Variance - One-Way ANOVA followed by Dunnett's Multiple Comparison Test (p <0.05). The electrical conductivity and pH of the media were evaluated before and after use as storage. The FTIR showed a difference between the control group and the ultrapure water group (p <0.001) for the phosphate / amide I ratio, as well as for artificial saliva (p = 0.033). For the carbonate / phosphate ratio, there was difference of the control group for the artificial saliva (p = 0.012) and for the deionized water (p = 0.002). For the amide I / amide III ratio, there was a significant difference of the control group for distilled water (p <0.001), saline (p <0.001) and deionized water (p = 0.009). When evaluating the Ca / P ratio, the statistical analysis showed that the samples of deionized water, artificial saliva and ultrapure water were different from the control group (p <0.001). An increase in electrical conductivity was observed for all media after storage of the samples, being more evident in ultrapure water. It was concluded that the storage media can interact with the chemical composition of dentin. The characteristics of the dentin stored in ultrapure water presented the greatest difference in relation to the detina of the control group; while frozen dentin presented the most similar results.

To evaluate tissue repair and inflammatory responses promoted by simvastatin and PLGA+HA scaffolds in bone defects created in rat calvaria. A 5-mm-diameter defect was created in each parietal bone of 180 animals, divided into 6 groups: naïve, sham, vehicle, PLGA+HA scaffold, simvastatin (4 mg/ml) and the combination of simvastatin and scaffold. All the interventions were done only on the right parietal bone while the left side served as control. Tissue sample collection was performed on postoperative days 1, 7, 15, 30, and 60. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA followed by post-hoc tests (p<0.05). Tissue levels of TNFa and IL1ß were evaluated on days 1, 7 and 15 in order to assess the inflammation status. Simvastatin significantly increased levels of TNFa on day 1 compared to the naïve group (p <0.05). The scaffold group significantly increased the levels of IL1ß on day 1 compared to naïve (p <0.001), sham (p <0.001), vehicle (p <0.001), simvastatin + scaffold (p <0.001), and simvastatin alone (p <0.01) groups. In all groups, at 7 and 15 days, these cytokines showed a decrease in levels. Bone healing was evaluated by densitometry on radiographs of the bone tissue samples, indicating that there was a delay in mineralization in vehicle and simvastatin groups until the 15th and 30th days (p <0.01). From the seventh day on, a progressive mineralization was observed in all other groups while, within 60 days, all groups showed statistically similar values of density. There was no statistical difference between the sides, except between the right side of simvastatin + scaffold, with higher density than the left (p<0.001). It may be concluded that the use of simvastatin and scaffolds of PLGA + HA, alone or in association, did not allow a better bone repair when compared to controls
