    Visual Place Recognition for Autonomous Robots

    Autonomous robotics has been the subject of great interest within the research community over the past few decades. Its applications are wide-spread, ranging from health-care to manufacturing, goods transportation to home deliveries, site-maintenance to construction, planetary explorations to rescue operations and many others, including but not limited to agriculture, defence, commerce, leisure and extreme environments. At the core of robot autonomy lies the problem of localisation, i.e, knowing where it is and within the robotics community, this problem is termed as place recognition. Place recognition using only visual input is termed as Visual Place Recognition (VPR) and refers to the ability of an autonomous system to recall a previously visited place using only visual input, under changing viewpoint, illumination and seasonal conditions, and given computational and storage constraints. This thesis is a collection of 4 inter-linked, mutually-relevant but branching-out topics within VPR: 1) What makes a place/image worthy for VPR?, 2) How to define a state-of-the-art in VPR?, 3) Do VPR techniques designed for ground-based platforms extend to aerial platforms? and 4) Can a handcrafted VPR technique outperform deep-learning-based VPR techniques? Each of these questions is a dedicated, peer-reviewed chapter in this thesis and the author attempts to answer these questions to the best of his abilities. The worthiness of a place essentially refers to the salience and distinctiveness of the content in the image of this place. This salience is modelled as a framework, namely memorable-maps, comprising of 3 conjoint criteria: a) Human-memorability of an image, 2) Staticity and 3) Information content. Because a large number of VPR techniques have been proposed over the past 10-15 years, and due to the variation of employed VPR datasets and metrics for evaluation, the correct state-of-the-art remains ambiguous. The author levels this playing field by deploying 10 contemporary techniques on a common platform and use the most challenging VPR datasets to provide a holistic performance comparison. This platform is then extended to aerial place recognition datasets to answer the 3rd question above. Finally, the author designs a novel, handcrafted, compute-efficient and training-free VPR technique that outperforms state-of-the-art VPR techniques on 5 different VPR datasets

    Keyframe-based monocular SLAM: design, survey, and future directions

    Extensive research in the field of monocular SLAM for the past fifteen years has yielded workable systems that found their way into various applications in robotics and augmented reality. Although filter-based monocular SLAM systems were common at some time, the more efficient keyframe-based solutions are becoming the de facto methodology for building a monocular SLAM system. The objective of this paper is threefold: first, the paper serves as a guideline for people seeking to design their own monocular SLAM according to specific environmental constraints. Second, it presents a survey that covers the various keyframe-based monocular SLAM systems in the literature, detailing the components of their implementation, and critically assessing the specific strategies made in each proposed solution. Third, the paper provides insight into the direction of future research in this field, to address the major limitations still facing monocular SLAM; namely, in the issues of illumination changes, initialization, highly dynamic motion, poorly textured scenes, repetitive textures, map maintenance, and failure recovery

    The requirements for assisted living are rapidly changing as the number of elderly patients over the age of 60 continues to increase. This rise places a high level of stress on nurse practitioners who must care for more patients than they are capable. As this trend is expected to continue, new technology will be required to help care for patients. Mobile robots present an opportunity to help alleviate the stress on nurse practitioners by monitoring and performing remedial tasks for elderly patients. In order to produce mobile robots with the ability to perform these tasks, however, many challenges must be overcome. The hospital environment requires a high level of safety to prevent patient injury. Any facility that uses mobile robots, therefore, must be able to ensure that no harm will come to patients whilst in a care environment. This requires the robot to build a high level of understanding about the environment and the people with close proximity to the robot. Hitherto, most mobile robots have used vision-based sensors or 2D laser range finders. 3D time-of-flight sensors have recently been introduced and provide dense 3D point clouds of the environment at real-time frame rates. This provides mobile robots with previously unavailable dense information in real-time. I investigate the use of time-of-flight cameras for mobile robot navigation in crowded environments in this thesis. A unified framework to allow the robot to follow a guide through an indoor environment safely and efficiently is presented. Each component of the framework is analyzed in detail, with real-world scenarios illustrating its practical use. Time-of-flight cameras are relatively new sensors and, therefore, have inherent problems that must be overcome to receive consistent and accurate data. I propose a novel and practical probabilistic framework to overcome many of the inherent problems in this thesis. The framework fuses multiple depth maps with color information forming a reliable and consistent view of the world. In order for the robot to interact with the environment, contextual information is required. To this end, I propose a region-growing segmentation algorithm to group points based on surface characteristics, surface normal and surface curvature. The segmentation process creates a distinct set of surfaces, however, only a limited amount of contextual information is available to allow for interaction. Therefore, a novel classifier is proposed using spherical harmonics to differentiate people from all other objects. The added ability to identify people allows the robot to find potential candidates to follow. However, for safe navigation, the robot must continuously track all visible objects to obtain positional and velocity information. A multi-object tracking system is investigated to track visible objects reliably using multiple cues, shape and color. The tracking system allows the robot to react to the dynamic nature of people by building an estimate of the motion flow. This flow provides the robot with the necessary information to determine where and at what speeds it is safe to drive. In addition, a novel search strategy is proposed to allow the robot to recover a guide who has left the field-of-view. To achieve this, a search map is constructed with areas of the environment ranked according to how likely they are to reveal the guide’s true location. Then, the robot can approach the most likely search area to recover the guide. Finally, all components presented are joined to follow a guide through an indoor environment. The results achieved demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed components

    Modeling the environment with egocentric vision systems

    Cada vez más sistemas autónomos, ya sean robots o sistemas de asistencia, están presentes en nuestro día a día. Este tipo de sistemas interactúan y se relacionan con su entorno y para ello necesitan un modelo de dicho entorno. En función de las tareas que deben realizar, la información o el detalle necesario del modelo varía. Desde detallados modelos 3D para sistemas de navegación autónomos, a modelos semánticos que incluyen información importante para el usuario como el tipo de área o qué objetos están presentes. La creación de estos modelos se realiza a través de las lecturas de los distintos sensores disponibles en el sistema. Actualmente, gracias a su pequeño tamaño, bajo precio y la gran información que son capaces de capturar, las cámaras son sensores incluidos en todos los sistemas autónomos. El objetivo de esta tesis es el desarrollar y estudiar nuevos métodos para la creación de modelos del entorno a distintos niveles semánticos y con distintos niveles de precisión. Dos puntos importantes caracterizan el trabajo desarrollado en esta tesis: - El uso de cámaras con punto de vista egocéntrico o en primera persona ya sea en un robot o en un sistema portado por el usuario (wearable). En este tipo de sistemas, las cámaras son solidarias al sistema móvil sobre el que van montadas. En los últimos años han aparecido muchos sistemas de visión wearables, utilizados para multitud de aplicaciones, desde ocio hasta asistencia de personas. - El uso de sistemas de visión omnidireccional, que se distinguen por su gran campo de visión, incluyendo mucha más información en cada imagen que las cámara convencionales. Sin embargo plantean nuevas dificultades debido a distorsiones y modelos de proyección más complejos. Esta tesis estudia distintos tipos de modelos del entorno: - Modelos métricos: el objetivo de estos modelos es crear representaciones detalladas del entorno en las que localizar con precisión el sistema autónomo. Ésta tesis se centra en la adaptación de estos modelos al uso de visión omnidireccional, lo que permite capturar más información en cada imagen y mejorar los resultados en la localización. - Modelos topológicos: estos modelos estructuran el entorno en nodos conectados por arcos. Esta representación tiene menos precisión que la métrica, sin embargo, presenta un nivel de abstracción mayor y puede modelar el entorno con más riqueza. %, por ejemplo incluyendo el tipo de área de cada nodo, la localización de objetos importantes o el tipo de conexión entre los distintos nodos. Esta tesis se centra en la creación de modelos topológicos con información adicional sobre el tipo de área de cada nodo y conexión (pasillo, habitación, puertas, escaleras...). - Modelos semánticos: este trabajo también contribuye en la creación de nuevos modelos semánticos, más enfocados a la creación de modelos para aplicaciones en las que el sistema interactúa o asiste a una persona. Este tipo de modelos representan el entorno a través de conceptos cercanos a los usados por las personas.
