    Boundary, Brightness, and Depth Interactions During Preattentive Representation and Attentive Recognition of Figure and Ground

    This article applies a recent theory of 3-D biological vision, called FACADE Theory, to explain several percepts which Kanizsa pioneered. These include 3-D pop-out of an occluding form in front of an occluded form, leading to completion and recognition of the occluded form; 3-D transparent and opaque percepts of Kanizsa squares, with and without Varin wedges; and interactions between percepts of illusory contours, brightness, and depth in response to 2-D Kanizsa images. These explanations clarify how a partially occluded object representation can be completed for purposes of object recognition, without the completed part of the representation necessarily being seen. The theory traces these percepts to neural mechanisms that compensate for measurement uncertainty and complementarity at individual cortical processing stages by using parallel and hierarchical interactions among several cortical processing stages. These interactions are modelled by a Boundary Contour System (BCS) that generates emergent boundary segmentations and a complementary Feature Contour System (FCS) that fills-in surface representations of brightness, color, and depth. The BCS and FCS interact reciprocally with an Object Recognition System (ORS) that binds BCS boundary and FCS surface representations into attentive object representations.     A theory of a saliency map in primary visual cortex (V1) tested by psychophysics of color-orientation interference in texture segmentation

    It has been proposed that V1 creates a bottom-up saliency map, where saliency of any location increases with the firing rate of the most active V1 output cell responding to it, regardless the feature selectivity of the cell. Thus, a red vertical bar may have its saliency signalled by a cell tuned to red colour, or one tuned to vertical orientation, whichever cell is the most active. This theory predicts interference between colour and orientation features in texture segmentation tasks where bottom-up processes are significant. The theory not only explains existing data, but also provides a prediction. A subsequent psychophysical test confirmed the prediction by showing that segmentation of textures of oriented bars became more difficult as the colours of the bars were randomly drawn from more colour categories

    Cortical Dynamics of Boundary Segmentation and Reset: Persistence, Afterimages, and Residual Traces

    Using a neural network model of boundary segmentation and reset, Francis, Grossberg, and Mingolla (1994) linked the percept of persistence to the duration of a boundary segmentation after stimulus offset. In particular, the model simulated the decrease of persistence duration with an increase in stimulus duration and luminance. Thc present article reveals further evidence for the neural mechanisms used by the theory. Simulations show that the model reset signals generate orientational afterimages, such as the MacKay effect, when the reset signals can be grouped by a subsequent boundary segmentation that generates illusory contours through them. Simulations also show that the same mechanisms explain properties of residual traces, which increase in duration with stimulus duration and luminance.     Texture Segregation By Visual Cortex: Perceptual Grouping, Attention, and Learning

    A neural model is proposed of how laminar interactions in the visual cortex may learn and recognize object texture and form boundaries. The model brings together five interacting processes: region-based texture classification, contour-based boundary grouping, surface filling-in, spatial attention, and object attention. The model shows how form boundaries can determine regions in which surface filling-in occurs; how surface filling-in interacts with spatial attention to generate a form-fitting distribution of spatial attention, or attentional shroud; how the strongest shroud can inhibit weaker shrouds; and how the winning shroud regulates learning of texture categories, and thus the allocation of object attention. The model can discriminate abutted textures with blurred boundaries and is sensitive to texture boundary attributes like discontinuities in orientation and texture flow curvature as well as to relative orientations of texture elements. The model quantitatively fits a large set of human psychophysical data on orientation-based textures. Object boundar output of the model is compared to computer vision algorithms using a set of human segmented photographic images. The model classifies textures and suppresses noise using a multiple scale oriented filterbank and a distributed Adaptive Resonance Theory (dART) classifier. The matched signal between the bottom-up texture inputs and top-down learned texture categories is utilized by oriented competitive and cooperative grouping processes to generate texture boundaries that control surface filling-in and spatial attention. Topdown modulatory attentional feedback from boundary and surface representations to early filtering stages results in enhanced texture boundaries and more efficient learning of texture within attended surface regions. Surface-based attention also provides a self-supervising training signal for learning new textures. Importance of the surface-based attentional feedback in texture learning and classification is tested using a set of textured images from the Brodatz micro-texture album.     Texture Segregation, Surface Representation, and Figure-ground Separation

    A widespread view is that most of texture segregation can be accounted for by differences in the spatial frequency content of texture regions. Evidence from both psychophysical and physiological studies indicate, however, that beyond these early filtering stages,there are stages of 3-D boundary segmentation and surface representation that are used to segregate textures. Chromatic segregation of element-arrangement patterns as studied by Beck and colleagues - cannot be completely explained by the filtering mechanisms previously employed to account for achromatic segregation. An element arrangement pattern is composed of two types of elements that are arranged differently in different image regions (e.g., vertically on top and diagonally on bottom). FACADE theory mechanisms that have previously been used to explain data about 3-D vision and figure-ground separation are here used to simulate chromatic texture segregation data, in eluding data with equiluminant elements on dark or light homogenous backgrounds, or backgrounds composed of vertical and horizontal dark or light stripes, or horizontal notched stripes. These data include the fact that segregation of patterns composed of red and blue squares decreases with inereasing luminance of the interspaces.     Evaluation of Statistical Features for Medical Image Retrieval

    In this paper we present a complete system allowing the classification of medical images in order to detect possible diseases present in them. The proposed method is developed in two distinct stages: calculation of descriptors and their classification. In the first stage we compute a vector of thirty-three statistical features: seven are related to statistics of the first level order, fifteen to that of second level where thirteen are calculated by means of co-occurrence matrices and two with absolute gradient; the last thirteen finally are calculated using run-length matrices. In the second phase, using the descriptors already calculated, there is the actual image classification. Naive Bayes, RBF, Support VectorMa- chine, K-Nearest Neighbor, Random Forest and Random Tree classifiers are used. The results obtained from the proposed system show that the analysis carried out both on textured and on medical images lead to have a high accuracy
